    Perfect Blue Review

Well, I finally got around to it.....after spending years and years waiting on my hard drive, I finally got around to Perfect Blue. I've seen some of Satoshi Kon's other works (Paprika & Paranoia Agent), and while Paprika's animation was beautiful it didn't necessarily feature the horror themes that I enjoyed in Paranoia Agent...and now Perfect Blue as well. In fact, Perfect Blue handles the whole 'psychological horror' thing far better than Paranoia Agent ever did, in my opinion.

I'm not sure how to write a film review, and I have no intention of creating my own version of the Wikipedia "Plot" segment here (not to mention that I am a spoiler Nazi). The real reason for writing this is that I don't regularly enjoy films, with anime films being a rare exception to that rule. Perfect Blue finally gave me the motivation to venture onto this sub-forum and start up a thread. People from this forum who speak to me often will know how huge of a deal that is.

I guess I'll just say that the first 2/3rds of the movie (while highly enjoyable) had me saying "well, people sure played up the mindfuck aspect of this movie.", and THEN IT GOT REALLY NUTS. This is a movie you have to watch down to the very last frame to know that it's done playing with your expectations. Far better, it doesn't end on a cliffhanger or a "make up your own ending" cop-out. It was deep, confusing at times, and the story isn't all told chronologically, but it has a definitive ending and I really respect that.

I'm also very happy I watched this movie alone and not when friends were over or in a movie theater. I was able to really tune-in and have everything just the way I like it so I could get the full experience (although the concept of a "full-experience" will change drastically from viewer to viewer, i'm sure).

Who else likes this movie? I know i'm 20+ years late to the party, haha. Anyway, thanks for reading!

I remember Mantis showing me this and hot damn, this movie was a trip. That was the first I ever seen of any Satoshi Kon's works (I've been meaning to watch them but never had a chance until Mantis introduced me to this movie). Saying this movie goes nuts is an understatement. There is just so many moments where it cuts between certain things that you're never quite sure if it's in the lead character's head or if it's really happening. It's certainly a movie that makes sense more and more as you view it multiple times. I actually went to a showing of it at my local theater with a few friends of mine and caught up on some things that made the ending more clear to me (Which I dare not spoil). It's certainly not a movie for everyone but if you go in with an open mind, it's a fantastic experience.

Yep, I almost watched it with you guys, but as so often happens I was too busy to make it that weekend. I'm sort of really glad I saw it the way I did, without trying to chat with people or anything. It was good to experience this movie 100% tuned-in, so to speak.

I thought never heard of it but I did a quick google and looked at the images. I remember someone on another forum talking about it. Is there a lot of gore in it or are the images just making it seem that way? I like the animation style of it. Might have to check it out this upcoming weekend.

I have a friend who swears by Kon and gushed to me about this movie. It's always been on my radar I just haven't found it on streaming and was kind of lazy about tracking down a DVD. Might have to track it down next time I'm out haha.

No, not a lot of gore. There was only one short scene that was perhaps hard to watch in terms of violence. It relies a lot more heavily on the threat of violence or psychological damage rather than actually showing you the physical payoff of a threat. I highly recommend it, and the film is only an hour and 20 mins long.

Get around to it. I left it on my radar for 4-5 years and I'm kicking myself for it. Also, I haven't seen you around on the forum before but you've got a significantly older Join Date than me. Welcome back!
