    Awkward AI Moments

So yesterday I was continuing my playthrough of Half-Life 2 on the hard difficulty. Later on in the game you have groups of armed citizens helping you fight off the Combine. (The bad guys.) One of the Combine's most bad-ass weapons is the Strider—think of a half-flesh, half-machine three-legged cross between a daddy long-legs/crane fly and a beetle that's nearly fifteen metres in height and fires plasma that can kill in seconds.

On hard mode, these things take seven rockets to kill, and it isn't easy to hit them with rockets either unless you're out in the open which will probably result in your death. Since I haven't completed Half-Life 2 in at least five years I didn't know entirely what to expect. I had a squad of three citizens following me and we were running down a street. Suddenly there was a huge blast ahead and a Strider emerged. I had no rockets left.

I commanded my squad to take cover in a nearby building and I lay low, trying to avoid being seen through the windows by the Strider as it walked past and made the ground shake. My team consisted of two female medics and one, well... guy. This guy was the same character model as John Freeman from the Half-Life 2 parody, "Full Life Consequences". Suddenly, even though the Strider had almost disappeared as it was walking away, this guy yelled "STRIIIDEEEER!!!" and started firing at it. It would probably take about 10,000 bullets to kill one of these things.

Imagine being stuck with Doofy from Scary Movie and him shouting that. The Strider turned around, charged towards us and shredded all four of us to pieces. That was pretty awkward. I got so frustrated with this guy I ended up deserting all my comrades. What about you guys? Any ridiculous AI stories?

    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

    RE: Awkward AI Moments

Actually, I have encountered an unusual point on Grand Theft Auto IV...

Whilst doing the... ahem, typical on GTA, I found a strange spot. A small curb, beyond which was a great drop to death. Many pedestrians walked by it hourly, so I figured it'd be a joyful place the have a fist fight. After a while, I began a fight with a man. Straight after the first hit, he pulled out a gun. So did I.
He was dead with one shot... then things began to get weird.
One ped. simply ran right off the ledge, then another. Before long, the entire 'audience' were hurling themselves over the ledge, trying to get away.

    Then a bike.

He must have heard the gunshot and for some reason, decided to sway off the road, down the stairs and over the edge.
My attemped fist fight turned into a 20+ person manslaughter.

    RE: Awkward AI Moments

Arma is a great source of AI messups. Here's my top three.

    1) An Iraqi was carrying an RPG-7 in a squad alongside some guys with AK-47s. A Humvee rides up past the squad and the RPG guy decides "Hey, rocket jumping might work" so decides to aim straight down and fire which sends his body up and then back down in the way of the Humvee.

So what does the Humvee do? Nothing. It just stops dead.

    2) An American was flying some sort of gunship (apache I think) and I ordered him "Fire at will" and "Open fire" (Just to make sure he would actually shoot something). I see a tank rolling up infront of us (B-90 I think) and order the Apache to fire at the tank. It does.

With the machinegun it has. Then it switches to missiles, aims at the tank and flies straight into it just as the Hydra missiles are fired. Massive ball of fire.

    3) A russian soldier was riding on a bike (the entire squad was) and we were going through some sort of town next to the sea. A helicopter decides to start firing at us so the AI goes for cover. Except this one guy. He decides the sea is a better source of protection than a house so he goes full pelt towards it and jumps off of the end still on the bike.

What the AI hadn't noticed is that there's a small boat under where the soldier rode from and he was now perminantly doing a wheelie trying to get out of the boat. The next thing I knew that occured was a Hellfire missile hitting the boat, the bike flying into the air and hitting the helicopter.

But that's not all. The AI loves to abandon helicopters when it takes 10% damage. This bike had killed the gunner and this also qualified as an abandon ship action. The pilot evacuated the Helicopter, landed on the floor and then was promptly crushed.

    RE: Awkward AI Moments

Man, that Cougar-Man video cracked me up even more now I've played a lot of RDR. And this one makes me laugh so loud, although I wouldn't call it awkward—just plain hilarious!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI8lAbwUoEk

I don't have a video, but I was pretty pissed off tonight when playing Metal Gear Solid 2. Basically, there's an escort part in the game (oh, we all absolutely love escort missions) that involves getting a young lady across to a different part of the facility. However, she has been sedated so you literally have to hold her hand to drag her along. I was spotted by a guard and I had dozens of enemies coming my way. I knew there was probably no hope of survival, but I managed to hide with her in a small room. I moved her to the corner and acted as a human shield in front of her. Amazingly, the one time she actually decided to get up and move was when the dumb bitch thought it was a good idea to take a peek down the barrel of the rifle I was firing at the guards.

    GAME OVER.

I know the exact escort mission you're talking about.

    Latest AI messup?

Patriarch in Killing Floor killed himself. How? He kept firing his rockets into the wall next to him instead of at the players. He did the same with the machine gun he has too.

There's also something in Resident Evil (also known as "REmake", for the GCN) that cracks me up every time; I have a savegame near the end of Jill's scenario with a V-Act (commonly referred to as a 'Crimson Head') that I'd managed to avoid waking up earlier. If you wake him up and run to the nearby stairway, he'll end up running around in circles trying to line up an attempt to swipe at you. I'll record a video of it at some point and post it here.
