    Favorite game genre?

Strategy here. More specifically, wargaming. More specifically, turn-based wargaming. While I enjoy most of these genres, nothing makes me happier or keeps me up later pulling off a win against a numerically superior foe through tactics and planning. Furthermore, sometimes it's nice to have a game that has tense situations and requires extremely careful decisions without relying on time pressure to do so.

Of course, every genre has its abysmal failures.

    RE: Favorite game genre?

Difficult to say. FPS comes high up, but I enjoy many game genres. However, most prevalent in my favourite games of all time is the RPG genre, so that got my vote. Wow, that looks like a horrible TBS, by the way.

    RE: Favorite game genre?

It is a horrible TBS. I should know, I was playing the damn thing.

Somewhat predictably I went with FPS, but more specifically I mean the classic FPS; stuff from the golden age before realism and all that other stupid **** started getting involved and blending everything into one big generic mush. Fact is, with a couple of exceptions I'll rarely play any FPS released post-2005. And even before then, things started going downhill.

Honourable mentions go to these other genres:
    • RTS
    • Survival Horror
    • Platformer

And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

    RE: Favorite game genre?

I'm open to all types of games. Beat 'em ups and FPS for multiplaying, puzzles for when I want to play a game but not for really long time, and the RPGs, Adventures and Open World Adventures for when I'm in the mood to sit and play some serious gaming - oh, and when mum is hogging the TV I then play The Sims, as I like to waste my life making characters that I play for about 2 days then decide to murder in some way.

I've been a massive Zelda fan for AGES. Zelda has been one of three game series that I have actually completed both just the storyline and collectables - the other has been Assassin's Creed (currently working on Brotherhood) and I've completed Prince of Persia Sands of TIme and that one which was pretty shite for Xbox 360 (with that girl that caught you if you jumped of a cliff or something). I got very far in Warrior Within, but then the game glitched which resulted in me being completely stuck. As much as I like Final Fantasy, I get bored with the unrealistic fighting system (turn-based) so I never get to the end (or the 3rd disc lol). I like to be able to hit A and it to do something.

... Pretty sure no-one cares lol
You're asking for historical accuracy in a series where men weilding three swords in each hand, pirates surfing across land on giant anchors, horses with motocycle parts attached and feudal-era Power Rangers are the norm?

I have a penchant for beat-em-up's like Devil May Cry, but I also have a soft spot for RPGs. I love Valve's brand of FPS titles, and I often wish for more RTS titles that feel like Homeworld (practically the only RTS I've played so far and enjoyed!). For the most part though, I enjoy the over-the-topness of beat-em'-ups.

DMC counts as a Beat-em up?

    RE: Favorite game genre?

I was thinking the same thing. More of an action/adventure in my opinion, though it does have beat-'em-up elements. I think most people associate a beat-'em-up as a game that involves one-versus-one fights. However, Power Stone for instance is considered a beat-'em-up, yet it has an adventure mode and fighting is in some small ways comparable to, say, Devil May Cry.

Sometimes there isn't a clear distinction.

    RE: Favorite game genre?

I always considered a beat-'em-up to be a game like Streets Of Rage/Final Fight; wander around beating the **** out of hordes of goons with your fists, pipes, bats, knives... you get the idea.

Things like Tekken/Street Fighter, I always called 'fighters'.

Now, Street Fighters Of Rage II is a whole different kettle of fish. Partially because it doesn't exist and only one other person on the entire planet will get the joke.

    RE: Favorite game genre?

I had to go with RPG, there is no other genre that I feel gives you so much replay ability. It is great being able to create a character that specialises in melee combat for example, you can then create another character who specialises in archery and it can feel like a completely new game. You need to then learn a different set of abilities, a different way to counter attack, etc.

My second choice would need to be RTS, close to about half of my PC game collection consists of them. I just really like to approach a situation, think of the different approaches that I can take and decide which is the best depending on my unit cap, resources or time. I don't think there is any other genre of video game that it feels so good to beat any enemy by outsmarting them.

Not anymore. Some of you might have seen us referring to this in-joke. It all started one night when I wasn't 100% sober and I was using my university forum. We had a small task to write about the first game we remember playing. One guy however mentioned Streets of Rage and Street Fighter as the same game. I found this hilarious and my inner troll surfaced. Yep, I trolled someone on my uni forum. It was worth it though.
