    RE: Gameshops !

They're pretty reasonable prices. Over here it's usually the case that game shops sell games for considerably high prices, that are often bought by what the US people call "soccer moms". Now, game shops here used to be awesome. But they're just not what they used to be. And with so many online game stores offering free delivery, sometimes it doesn't seem worth the hassle to go to town and probably pay more when you can have the game delivered to you for cheap.

If you buy any retro games, I recommend checking charity shops whenever you're in town. Now you can sure find some great deals in those. Sometimes you'll find nothing, but it's worth spending a few minutes for some bargain hunting.

"by what the US people call "soccer moms"" this made me lol

i don't game as much as i used to, but when i did, it was so hard for be to find old games for my n64. i don't live near a bigger city, and the one store that sold old games had one rack of n64 stuff, so i just usually bought off on amazon or ebay. i got a perfectly fine majoras mask for 50 cents on ebay, no ben or anything.

    RE: Gameshops !

Wow, I bet the seller was pissed. A popular chain of game shops here called Gamestation used to have their own retro section. When they were bought out by a larger company, most of the retro sections gradually disappeared, although they have sold games from the last generation (Xbox/PS2/GC) which I wouldn't call particularly retro.

The bottom line really is that like arcades, game shops are becoming a thing of the past, slowly but surely.

From what I can tell, GameStation outlets are all gradually being phased out. The three closest to me have all closed down now, and (unsurprisingly) point to Game being the nearest related seller (or 'respawn point', as the notice calls it). What does this mean to me?

Not much, because as you say they stopped catering to the retro crowd a long time ago; they even stopped selling used PC games, which pretty much gave me no reason at all to take a look every now and then (with the exception of RAGE: Anarchy Edition being on sale for £15 in the run-up to Christmas).

Luckily for me though, the second-hand place literally across the road from the now-defunct GameStation still sells all sorts of retro nonsense. And the customers seem to be smart, too -- they've had several 'Shaq-Fu' cartridges displayed in the window for months now, and it seems that nobody wants to touch them.

No, I'm not about to buck the trend.

And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

    RE: Gameshops !

In a city I used to live in there were a couple of decent independent gaming shops but where I'm at right now, only GameStop and this other shop that's actually independent but not really a fan of them.

I used to support one shop in particular because the owner had some really fair trade-in and resale prices, waaay better than GameStop and the other crap. Too bad those days are long gone for now...

There aren't many game shops near me so I get my games online.
