Unhappy Pokémon

Pokémon

Hey! I am Diz, and I am a Pokémon fan. It is time to bring some Pokémon (apparently short for "Pocket Monsters") awesomeness in here already.

In our own world, Pokémon comes in manga, anime and games. Now, I am unsure which one of these came first as I have not done any research before making this topic, but I assume either the manga or games. Nonetheless, they all seem slightly different, be it visually, mechanic, stories, or as someone else once said, even a big difference in depth of maturity. This should not come off as much of a surprise due to the section posted within, but I will focus on the games.

There have been many Pokémon games released up through time, but most of them have had more or less the same missions with updated graphics, deeper gameplay system and player choices affecting gameplay. Having said that, what is Pokémon all about?

A Pokémon is a monster or animal in the Pokémon universe, often carrying similarities to how creatures in our very own world look like, but they are slightly different. They learn special kind of moves while growing stronger that may be used as attacks, however in the games, a Pokémon is limited to knowing four moves at any time. With the help of so-called Poké Balls, Pokémon may be caught by humans as their own to keep, however often you will have to physically weaken a Pokémon before doing so, or else it may easily break free out of the Poké Ball and flee.

A Poké Ball is the small sphere-like device used to capture wild Pokémon. After being hauled at a Pokémon, having it come in contact with the button of the device, the Pokémon is turned into raw energy and then brought inside the ball. If the Pokémon does not or cannot struggle enough for a few seconds to break out, the Poké Ball will successfully bind itself to the Pokémon and it will be caught. Due to being raw energy inside the Poké Ball, the Pokémon temporarily loses its weight and size. This enables players to capture and carry Pokémon with them regardless of size and weight.

Many in the Pokémon universe decide to keep Pokémon as pets and close friends. Pokémon Trainers are those who decide to train their Pokémon to become stronger. They fight both wild Pokémon and those of other Pokémon Trainers in battles. By becoming stronger, many Pokémon eventually evolve into other superior forms, which alone further strengthens a Pokémons power.

================================================== ==

The mainstream games start off with you waking up to a special day, whether your character knows it or not. In one or another way, you encounter a Poké Ball, containing a Pokémon, that is destined to you, though in many games you may choose one of up to three Poké Balls, each containing a different Pokémon. You have been hearing about Pokémon for quite some time, even wanting one for yourself, and now people in your hometown are envying you for being able to start on an exciting adventure as a Pokémon Trainer.

Looks pretty, does it not? In the Nintendo DS Pokémon games, the outside world is in 3D!

Usually in the games, you receive your own Pokémon on the condition that you help professors out on Pokémon research and discovery. You do this by capturing as many Pokémon as you can, and a Pokédex handed to you will then automatically record information about the caught Pokémon. However, things soon change, and you figure you have other goals as well. Mean organizations are around to try changing the world, using Pokémon as brute force of their will. Who are going to stop them? Well you, of course! There is also that one dream you always had of becoming one of the strongest Pokémon Trainers of them all and taking on the Pokémon Champion. Will you succeed?

You can catch as many Pokémon as you like, and the initial goal is even to capture one of every kind there is, but you may only carry a total of six Pokemon along with you at any given time. Pokémon can remember up to four moves at a time each, and the battle system is turn-based, usually with one-versus-one Pokémon at a time. A well-known RPG fact is that after defeating a foe, you are awarded experience points and may eventually level up and grow stronger, Pokémon is no different. When defeating Pokémon in battles however, they faint instead of die (thank goodness for that) and may easily be revived using either items or Pokémon Centers.

The Flying type move Roost heals up to half of your Pokémon's maximum HP. Simultaneously, until the next turn, your Pokémon loses the Flying type. Makes sense due to it roosting its wings, right?

All Pokémon have at least one type, be it Normal, Flying or Normal and Flying. Attacks are also based on types, as well as being either "special" or physical moves. Even if a Pokémon is a pure Normal type, it is possible that the Pokémon in question may be taught ie. Magical Leaf, a Grass type move. The Pokémon will however gain a damage boost on its Normal attack due to being the same type as the move. Grass, however, is "super effective" againts Water type Pokémon, in which the Grass type move would do more damage than the Normal type move.

I think Pokémon is a fantastic game. After Flare got me back into it some years ago, I became addicted once again. It offers a unique gameplay where one can build ones teams, train Pokémon to increase specific and ideal stats, teach and combine both teams of Pokémon and their moves and develope strategies and tactics. The more I play it, the more I learn there is to it, and I had honestly never guessed that the way it works is deeper than it seems, and it makes it really fun!

So, what are your thoughts on Pokémon? Share your favourite moments, express your joy for the games, discuss teams and tactics, but most of all, have fun!! ^___^

RE: Pokémon

I'll be brief, because that's all I can be with this topic:

I got Pokemon Red back in Y8 at school, completed it in a relatively short time, was overall disappointed in the tedious nature of the game; GRIND GRIND GRIND. So the cartridge slot in my GB was unsurprisingly re-occupied by games such as Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong or Metroid II, and outside of that I continued with my quest to unlock RE2's "The 4th Survivor" and "The Tofu Survivor" minigames... and back then I sucked at RE2.

Never touched a Pokemon game since, and didn't bother with the anime either. It's just not for me.
"It turned out that the ghost was just Mr. Finley, who ran the amusement park. The spooky part is that, as soon as the ghost appeared, the teenagers' dog began to speak! And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

RE: Pokémon

Thanks for starting this thread Diz!!!

I was first introduced to pokemon by the the Indigo League Show (or first season of pokemon). From there I was just entranced with the concept (as simple as it was, but I don't care, haha). I have over 200 cards laying around in my room back at home in my closet. Whenever I get the chance I look through them all My very first pokemon game was Red Version for the Gameboy Color. I spent countless hours playing that game, but sadly lost it, wish I could play through it again. The next pokemon games I got were Pokemon Stadium 1 and Pokemon Stadium 2 for the Nintendo 64. I'll actually have my Nintendo 64 with me here at the dorms, and actually been playing both games recently. After playing red version I was able to play very little of gold because my cousin let me borrow it for a short while. Then it was pokemon sapphire which I still go back to every once and a while. I thought it was a good game. I currently have diamond version and am getting kind of bored with all the new pokemon they're introducing. I can tolerate the orginal and jhoto pokemon but its starting to become to much for me. I'm actually planning on purchasing heart gold and soul silver this upcoming weekend for me and my brother to play. I found out that they are actually re-makes of gold and silver and look forward to it, plus it looks like it sticks to more of the original pokemon which is nice Right now I'm actually watching the first season of pokemon, currently on episode 57. If I would have to choose a favorite pokemon, I would go with Arcanine! And as for favorite type, FIRE

I am thrilled that you are planning to get Heartgold and Soulsilver. They are awesome remakes, really. My nostalgia levels went through the roof. We need to play together online at some point!

When the question of a favourite Pokémon shows up, I do not even hesitate in answering. I would undoubtably go with Raichu! I even kind of see myself online as a Raichu (I know that it is silly, but who cares), and I call my Raichu in-game for Diz, him being the "leader" for my main team.

Good to know there good Most definitely getting them then and that would be cool if we could play online sometime, you would probably demolish me though

That's awesome, at one point Raichu was my favorite, but I found another one. And its not silly, not gonna lie always thought how cool it would be to have an arcanine to ride around on, haha. I sadly always end up over leveling one of the starter pokemon and the rest fall behind, going to try and keep it more evened out my next play through, or when I start up on heart gold, going to give soul silver to my brother. We grew up playing the games together, we always got the opposite versions.

Hooold it right there! I keep building silly teams, for instance the recent one where someone had to point out to me that 4/6 of my team were weak to Ice and 3/6 weak to, like, ground or what it was again. I am terrible at competitive modes in games, but I just play for fun and the Pokémon I like anyway, not some giant scary monster just because it can KO my favourite Pokémon. X3

I envy your ability to have someone in real life to play it with. I never got to play it with anyone in real life, and I do not seem to have anyone in the near who is willing to get the new games anyway.

RE: Pokémon

I really like the strategy involved with picking the right 6 pokemon to make a solid team, along with the right 4 moves for each of those pokemon. There's no single right answer to it, and each of the many combinations has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Agreeing with BaronOfStuff on the grinding, though. It's downright painful how much you have to do to get anywhere. I'm just glad the newer games have the option to set all the pokemon to the same levels for multiplayer matches. Well, that doesn't help with Effort Values and Initial Values, but I can't even be bothered with those.

EDIT: Watched the anime a lot as a kid too, but IIRC I stopped shortly after the third movie. I know the third was the last movie I saw. Damn, so much nostalgia involved with this series.

EDIT 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: I haven't played SoulSilver in awhile, but for the curious, here's my craptastic team:

-Togekiss
-Dragonite
-Machamp
-Gyarados
-Golem
-Magneton

RE: Pokémon

Diz: Sounds like we would be some even opponents Diz and I'm sorry you didn't have anyone to play with :\ Still can be a fun game with just one person. I'm in college now so I won't really be able to play with my brother this time around...

Dr. Killjoy: Yea I know where you and baron are coming from but I still enjoy it none the less And I do enjoy the strategy to it even though I'm not the best strategist... haha. And sounds like you got a pretty kick-ass team of pokemon there. Yea there are like 15? pokemon movies out now I'm rather found to the earlier shows and movies, but on occasion I will check out some of the new stuff.

RE: Pokémon

Hehe, I was hoping for a topic like this!
Diz, y'still got me to play with

To be honest, I call Diz the shiny master. Partly because in the latter games (Pearl, Diamond etc.) he can catch shiny pokemon (just a different coloured pokemon sprite) by the truck load! I've only managed it a few times.
I first got into Pokemon when CITV started airing it on a Friday morning oh so many years ago. I think I was 9. Then the Poke-craze hit my primary school and everyone got into it. In the end, the teachers had to ban us from taking the Pokemon trading cards to school because we'd be making trades in classes
I think I still have one of our Platinum battles saved, Diz! I'll have to check it out again soon. I do miss it (oddly enough).
The latest Pokemon game I've tried out would be Pokemon White. It was all in Japanese so I got maybe 1/4 way through before giving up. When the English version is ported, I'll definately be getting Pokemon Black (I prefer the legendary compared to the black one ^^;; )

We should all trade wi-fi codes

As for my perfect team.. I love to use fire and psychic types. I don't know why but their move sets just suit the way I battle very much ^^
I can't choose a favourite pokemon.. I seem to switch who I like around a lot. But it mainly focuses on the dog/fox ones

Kokiri, I think I still have a Shiny Growlithe if you're interested ^^
Come join me in the Chat Room! ~Nyaa!

RE: Pokémon

I'll try to go for the pokemon I prefer, but given a choice between a preferred pokemon and a strategically good one, I go with the strategically good one. Generally my procedure goes something like this:

1) "What role do I really need filled in my current team?"
2) "What's a pokemon I like that would fill this role well?"
3) Acquire pokemon

I do have my limits though. I have no desire to do the whole "Breed 8 different generations of pokemon together to give this one a special move and you have to try for another one if it doesn't have the exact right nature and then you have to kill 200 zubats and 200 tentacool to give it the right effort values and then you have to..."
