    Unreal Tournament

I'll be short with this topic because I'm about to go somewhere for a moment.

Does anyone else here have this game, and do they have any recommended mods for it? Some of my old favourites from my school/college years were:

*Will update when I get back and remember half of the damn things*

It'd be pretty damn cool to get a few rounds of this going between members in the near-future, what with having all the various gamemodes and extras going for it. So, uh, yeah.

    'Sign up', as it were.

And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

    RE: Unreal Tournament

Cool list, bro. Yeah, I played a bit of the original UT at high school. Otherwise I haven't played it, but I do sometimes play Unreal Tournament III. However, I do have the Unreal Anthology which includes all of the older Unreal games, so I could install the original Unreal Tournament if I wanted to. Sign me up.

Anyway, seeing as you must be so proud of that one, I'll put my list here instead of in my original post. Now everyone can behold your razor wit forever!

In no particular order, here's the ones I remember playing most.

    1: Tac Ops
This one isn't so much a mod as an expansion; it has its own .exe and all that good shit. Anyway, what does it do? Well if the title wasn't a big enough clue, it's one of those CS-like mods that changes all the standard weapons into realistic firearms. I can take a guess at what you're probably thinking. It's either "LOL ARMY SOLDIERS", or "well if it's so much like Counter-Strike, then why the hell don't we just play CS?"

    Because you're WRONG.

Alright, so it does include a gamemode that revolves around stuff like the standard Hostage Rescue/Bomb Defusing scenarios, all that boring, tired shit you'd expect from such a thing like this, but that's not important. What makes this one worth the time is that you can play all the original UT modes and maps with the replacement weapons, which in turn can really mix the balance of a map up. All those old camping spots can go to hell, moreso if you turn the 'force random' on weapon spawn locations. Ever tried playing Assault with only Smoke Grenades at your team's disposal when your enemy is armed with everything else?

(Note: Whatever you do, download the 2.2 version of this and no other. It's the last one before it focused on that basic CS-styled nonsense, and as far as I can tell all versions after 2.2 dropped support for standard UT gamemodes; that's just not cool.)

    2: Jailbreak
You really need other players for this one, because the AI just... ah, it just loafs around too much. But with enough living, sentient players? This is one of my favourites.

The idea behind this is sorta like a Team Elimination (or Last Man Standing), but with one huge twist; when you die, you're not necessarily out for good. Instead, your stupid ass gets jailed, and it's up to the rest of your team to get you out of the slammer.

Alternate ways of escaping are duelling a rival prisoner in a separate arena from the main skirmish, or by finding some obscure, hidden way out. Not all maps have that last option though, so duels are SRS BSNS.

It's definitely more fun than that stupid show with the similar name that dragged on forever.

    3: Deadly Alliance
I've got to be honest, we'd only play this one for the novelty value. The objective for every map is simple; defend your 'base' against a never-ending horde of bots until time runs out. There's several classes to choose from, and if you're going to survive a huge wave of these bastards, you really need to mix it up to get as many advantages as possible.

Not the best mod out there, but it's still good for a laugh. "You smell somethin' burning?"

    4: Assassins
You have a target. Kill him for points, and get yourself another target. But you're also someone else's target. Kill him for points too... once you find out who he is!

But what about the others? Don't kill them, you'll lose points and become a loony! And when that happens, it's open season on your nuts.

This one can get incredibly frantic. There's no way of telling who's hunting you down until they score a hit, so a few rounds of this become very tense with all sorts of misfiring and stupid point losses going on. Trust nobody, but don't get trigger-happy either.

Unless of course you WANT to be a loony.

    5: Strangelove
You know the Redeemer? Forget it, it's obsolete compared to this toy and is fully replaced. You can ride this rocket and pick up a passenger if you want, just remember to dismount before the missile reaches the target.

Oh, and keep an eye on the fuel too.

So there we have it. There's literally hundreds of mods for UT, possibly even thousands, but these are the ones I would screw around with most often. If you know any others, list 'em!

Oh yes, they will. Jailbreak sounds like the most awesome of the lot. I'll install UT on my laptop when I next use it. At least this is a game that no one will need to worry about system requirements for.

    RE: Unreal Tournament

    Well, I hope not!

Jailbreak is by far the most original and 'authentic' of the lot. So much more of a teamgame than any other mode, and would easily consume an entire day if we got the arrangements right, but they're all good enough to be worth checking out. Even DA, with its immediate novelty value and initially 'odd' feel, is still a polished bit of work that can eat up the hours without anyone realising (unless we're all shit and keep losing).

The one that seems to catch most players off-guard is the TO mod. They expect it to be some sort of bland, almost slow-paced, semi-tactical 'Search & Destroy' mission (LOL ARMY SOLDIERS), when really it's the same frantic UT gameplay everyone knows but with different weapons. All the old maps, powerups and match rules are still there. The weapons themselves though are incredibly powerful compared to the vanilla stuff. Not quite OHK powerful (well, some are), but on average you can take about as many hits as you would in Fester's Quest (two, sometimes three) before you're on the slab.

I should probably point out that the 'Strangelove' mod is actually a game mutator as opposed to a full game mode, and can be used with any of the UT mods that use the original UT executable (yes, Jailbreak included); it doesn't work with TO or DA though as they use their own .exes, and instead the game just crashes horribly if you load up the SLV mutator and try to pick the weapon up.
