428% surge in profits for Nintendo

Nintendo’s operating profits skyrocketed 428% in the fiscal first quarter, the company said Thursday, a wild jump that reflects just how much the video game industry has benefited from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Japanese gaming giant reported operating profit of 144.7 billion yen ($1.4 billion) in the April-June quarter, smashing analyst expectations and representing a massive climb from the 27.4 billion yen it posted in the year-ago quarter.

Net sales meanwhile came in at 358.1 billion yen, up an impressive 108% from the 172.1 billion yen Nintendo reported in the same period last year. Sales of the company’s popular Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite consoles grew around 167% to 5.68 million units in the quarter.

What is interesting about this is that a lot of people, in spite of reaching this high of a percentage surge, still can't find a brand new Nintendo Switch to buy! I have heard of complaints that games have been hard to find as well. I don't know what they are doing or how they managed this when people all over the place are struggling to still buy a console.

The increase is probably more down to game sales. Nintendo make more money from the games than the consoles due to manufacturing costs. With many people having a lot more free time lately I imagine they've had more of a chance to enjoy more Switch games.

That makes sense. Some people say that Nintendo will purposely hold back manufacturing to ensure every single sale on their consoles are made as well. I know the lite version of the Switch came out not too long ago so that likely helped their sales as well. Those seem to be easy to find.

I know you're quoting a meme here but the truth is needed once more! It's time for me to be that guy again. The actual master race is the obscure one here.

Like with non-portable gaming, PC leads the way for TRUE and HONEST gaming. I did talk a fair bit about this years back. It remains niche for the same reason why console gaming still has an audience as large as it does. People want simple. They want an experience that only requires a lower-end processor inside their heads. Flick a switch and you're good to go. And the GPD-WIN 2 is actually really easy to get started with, but it's the prospect of it being a handheld computer in essence is what scares off a lot of people.

The WIN 2 can do more than the Nintendo Switch. You can consider it backwards compatible with almost every Nintendo game ever before the Switch, usually at a full speed. 3DS? In most cases, yes. Same with Wii U. Emulating the Switch on such a device is asking too much, but it does automatically trump Nintendo in terms of a Nintendo library. The majority of other game platforms too. In fact, in terms of the Switch's own library, it's true in this case as well. The Switch largely has third-party titles that are also for PC (the case for many of the best games on Switch) that the WIN 2 can often run better, such as Skyrim or Doom.

The WIN 2 can actually "switch", unlike a Switch Lite. It's incredibly easy to sit the WIN 2 in a dock that connects a HDMI to the TV. I made use of this on holiday. I had a PC with a great library full of many of the best games ever made in my pocket. Pocket being the keyword. Most pockets, no prerequisite of a coat pocket or baggy pants.

Practically every argument I've heard for owning a Switch is destroyed by a GPD WIN 2 counterargument. Nintendo's first-party offerings are good, yes, but it's still sequel after sequel and Nintendo are still refusing to innovate. I highly respected Nintendo in the 1990s, that's for sure. Sadly not anymore. The argument that the WIN 2 is much more expensive than a Switch has a lot of validity but it's the same story as PCs. The WIN 2 is indeed more for hardcore gamers, lacking the appeal the Switch has to casuals.
