    E3 2019 General Thread

Hi everyone! I know for a fact that there are a decent number of gaming fans here and I've even spoken to a few of you about E3, so here's a place to discuss it in general, although I may open individual threads for certain games I'm excited about.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty about E3 that sucks and most years are duds but I feel that this was definitely one of the "peak" years (hopefully not dropping into a trough for 2020). I'll go through show-by-show, saving my personal favorites for last. Feel free to structure your post in any way you see fit or even just comment on one game announcement, I won't yell at you. Probably.

EA - I didn't even realize they had an event this year. I refuse to support EA due to all of their race-baiting and scummy business tactics (remember "turn every $60 purchase into $200" anyone?). Whatever they announced, I won't be purchasing or even pirating it.

Bethesda - Had the usual community pandering...I guess they did an alright job talking about games and announcing products but I haven't bought a Bethesda game since Skyrim on PS3, I don't really follow their games and I probably won't until TES6 comes out. Starfield sounds cool too, but it may just be vaporware at this point.

Microshaft - Not an Xbox fan but I do like PC, and that's what's cool about Microsoft conferences it's sort of covering two platforms. Since Sony wasn't at E3 this year, Microsoft got to show off the new Tales of game. Been a big Tales of fan for 14 years since I played Symphonia for the first time and I've nearly completed my series collection at this point. Good on them. I'll play PSO2 as well.

Devolver Digital - Took a look through all their games on Wikipedia. I've heard of some of them but never touched a single one. I don't deserve an opinion on this one since it's so far out of my wheelhouse.

PC Gaming Show - Literally 1 thing I was interested in, Shenmue 3. Similar to the 'Tales of' showing at Microsoft's event, I think the PC show got Shenmue because Sony wasn't there? I realize it's releasing on PC as well but Sony was a big part of why Shenmue 3 happened in the first place. Good on the PC folks for giving Shenmue some stage time! Aside from that, the other thing of note was a guy trying to show off a chess game? Yikes. That's the only thing I remember aside from Shenmue 3.

Ubisoft - Tom Clancy games. Like......to the point where it was getting comical.

Square Enix - The one I was waiting for! FF7 remake (sure you knew that), a surprise Final Fantasy VIII Remaster (YES), Crystal Chronicles (I'll probably pick this up. I'm not often one for multiplayer but it could be funny with some friends if it supports local play). Yes I realize that's 3 Final Fantasy games and I just ripped on Ubishaft for having 3 Tom Clancy games. The difference is that FF is good and Tom Clancy isn't as good.

My favorite game shown was FFVIII of course, but what everyone wants to talk about is FFVII so I will indulge you. The remake is looking great and is much farther along than I expected. My wife noticed how excited I was leading up to the During the event they mentioned this being a game that series beginners or those who haven't played the original can enjoy, which appears to be the case. I was shocked that she stuck around for the whole FFVII segment and asked me to buy it for her! I'm so far into the fanbase that I sometimes forget about the outsider viewpoint. It was nice to have her there for that. My favorite part about the remake news is that it will be released on two discs. The few of you who know me really well will know that I love classic media and nostalgic stuff like multi-disc games & swapping discs after a huge cutscene or something. There was a guy I worked with 2 years ago and his LEAST favorite thing about games was changing discs. How? I don't know.
I'm gonna buy Oninaki too. I get everything from the Tokyo RPG Factory team, I love how they keep 90's-style JRPGs alive.

The odd thing is that I wasn't hyped for the remake until earlier this year. I wasn't the hugest FFVII fan, but somehow I've gotten caught up in the avalanche of fan excitement. If I had gone full hype mode 2015, I'd already have been waiting 4 years and I'd be bitter at this point. I feel like now is the right time to buy-in on the hype with the release date closing in. Good vibes.

Nintendo - Wasn't even planning to watch this at first. I don't own a Switch yet (2 reasons. 1 - I was burned so bad on the Wii U that I'm still salty. 2 - I hate handhelds with a passion. Give me a thing to plug into my TV. The console's power is kneecapped by its mobile functionality that I don't care about), but after this E3 I may finally purchase one. I know it's for soyboys and all that shit, but it's actually my wife pushing for one. She is juuuuuust getting into gaming, and Nintendo is a really good jumping in point, not to mention it has the most games that appeal to her. She enjoyed Pokemon Sun & Moon and would like to play a console Pokemon game on the TV.
-I have to give credit to Nintendo for the Banjo Kazooie and DQ11 characters in Smash as well! I don't play Smash, but big respect for supporting those 100% ballin' series.
-Luigi's Mansion is cool as fuck too, I have really good memories of the first game and even some good times with the second.
-Daemon x Machina is giving me Zone of the Enders vibes. Yes please.
    - A new Mana series game + re-releases...mmmmm spicy.
    - Panzer Dragoon remake (while this was announced in 2018 it was cool to see in action! I find it weird that they didn't mention the confirmed remake of PZ: Zwei...?)

This aint' about Pokemon or Smash though...it's about Zelda! I'll probably need to make a separate thread for that though as this one is too damn long as-is. Very hyped for Link's Awakening despite the art style & the BotW sequel since it appears to be going in a more Majora's Mask-ish direction with it.

This E3 did feel pretty underwhelming but I wouldn't say it's horrible. It just feels like a downgrade compared to last year since we had knockout title after knockout title being announced. Still, this year had some noteworthy stuff.

I'm very much looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077. I've kind of been keeping on eye on it mainly because I wanted to get into the original pen and paper game that this is based off of but never got to play it since my old RPG group always preferred Pathfinder and D&D (Grrrr). Everything I've seen looks solid and the subject matter is right up my alley so I intend to pick this one up when it's released.

I wont lie, Tales of Arise looks pretty good.

The only Tales game I ever played was Tales of Legendia many moons ago and I recall really liking that one. I've been meaning to get into the Tales games but never got a chance with the other. Still, I'm digging the atmosphere and if has satisfying real time combat, then I think this game is going to be very enjoyable.

I did also check out Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. I had somewhat of an interest if only because I wanted to see how it stacked up to the Jedi Knight games and from the looks of it, it's basically Dark Souls mixed with Uncharted and The Force Unleashed. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It looks like a good time and you can do some cool shit with the force powers. Still, it doesn't look like it's gonna be sixty bucks good and I'll probably pick it up used at a cheaper price.

As for my big favorite game this E3...well, if you know me then this shouldn't come as a surprise.

Ho...ly...shit this looks awesome. Everything from this trailer to the gameplay b-roll footage I've seen looks incredible. It's keeping everything that made Doom 2016 awesome and expanding on it. I love that it's bringing back more classic designs from the old games and (Cyberdemon looks awesome). It looks fast-paced, has good sized levels that encourage exploration and secret finding and satisfying gunplay which is what I want from any first-person shooter. Now I just to make the painful wait for November to finally play it. Hold on to your dicks, this game is going to be fucking amazing.

Sorry if my first post was a little misleading. What I was saying is that E3 is USUALLY underwhelming, but this one will go down in my top 2 or 3. Overall there was TONS of stuff I didn't care about but the Square Enix and Nintendo shows alone made it for me. I've never watched an E3 that left me with an additional 7 or 8 games on my "to buy" list.

Well, I have some catching up to do! LOL

I have not paid attention to E3 in a long, long time because most games that appeal to me, I am going to play them regardless of their presentation at E3.

That Doom game though... I can hear the sound of my money disappearing already. haha
