    favorite hero or villain

so if you had to choose, which video-game hero and villain would be your favorite? My favorite hero would be red from pokemon because of how iconic he is. My favorite villain would be Gustave Eugene XIII from Saga Frontier II.

That's a tough one. Even though Final Fantasy VIII is probably my favourite game, I wouldn't say that Squall is my favourite hero by a long shot. I'll have to consider that a little. A favourite villain might be easier since there's generally a wider amount of options. Often a game will have multiple villains for different arcs, but in most cases just one main protagonist or hero for all of those arcs. Even this is really difficult for me. So I'll just give a contending villain who'd probably make it to the top five: Ultimecia from FFVIII. She isn't exactly popular but when you learn more about the story and subsequently Ultimecia herself she becomes far more interesting. I can't really say anything without spoilers.

She has kickass boss music however. The audio panning at the beginning always gave me so many chills as a teen, and while this is a bold statement I think it's one of the best final boss themes in game history. And what kind of amazing villain doesn't have great theme music?

For my favorite hero, it's a tie between two characters.

First up is Dante from Devil May Cry. He is such a fun character because he doesn't look at the situation with a straight face. He mouths and jokes to his enemies and shows off whenever he fights. He is proficient in any form of combat you care to name and can perform some insanse stunts. And though he doesn't wear it on his sleeve, he is still a heroic character that fights and believes in humanity.

And then there is the Doom marine...

Where Dante does his fighting with flair, the Doom marine is a straight up bruiser that would rather simply smash, blast and obliterate his enemies. And then there is where he becomes the Doom Slayer. He single handedly kicks hell's ass and, when he is reawaken, is just this ball of rage who despises what the UAC has done to bring in demons into our world and just goes on a bloody rampage. His glory kills show how much disdain that he has for these things. He is quite possibly the most cathartic video game character ever.

as for villain, I have to go with Shodan from System Shock 1 and 2. A.I.s going rouge is not a new concept, but what makes Shodan compelling is the fact that, not only does she become self-aware, but begins to see herself as divine, something bigger and better than humanity. In System Shock 2, you unwillingly end up on her side but with the way she talks down to you, you get that sense that she is just going to kill you the moments she deems you useless. That and her voice acting along with the distortions added to her voice makes her unsetteling.

There isn't a video game protaganist dearer to my heart than Kyle Hyde from Hotel Dusk: 215 and Last Window: The Secret of Cape West. He's stylish, facetious, sarcastic and honestly kind of an asshole, but you know the guy must have a good heart to have helped out so many people at their darkest hour.

Honorable mention goes to Link, particularly how he is portrayed in the A Link to the Past comic by Shotaro Ishinomori. He's such a cowardly, lovable dork. But you know what they say, it's not until you are afraid that you can truly be brave.

As for favorite villain... I can't think of many villains I really 'liked', though Liquid Snake from the first Metal Gear Solid comes to mind. There are a lot of points in the game where this fucker should have died-- being blown up in a Hind-D, taking stinger missiles to the face, beaten to a bloody pulp and falling from a great height, even taking a barrage of machine gun bullets and a jeep crash wasn't enough to stop him. You have to respect a villain who just doesn't know when to quit.

How on earth did Kyle Hyde slip past? He's absolutely a very strong contender in my book! There's a reason I chose that series for two university assignments. Without Kyle and his great backstory the game may have ended up mediocre. I could almost say he's my final choice...

"Ahh... the days of my youth... like the scent of fresh lemon", you see. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was undoubtedly amongst my favourite games eleven years ago. It just felt so original; unlike anything else I had played as I didn't play many quest-like games, and even then the series is like no other. But like Hotel Dusk and Last Window, I think the protagonist Phoenix Wright himself may have "made" the game. I simply always found him to be a real character. His corniness made me laugh perhaps a little too much, and this also brings me to something a little off-topic: localisation. I don't understand why a handful of westerners dislike the game's localisation. Their main beef with it is switching various objects in the game (e.g. items of food) to appeal more to a western audience, but they also have a problem with some script translations not being totally correct. I find it all a bit weebish.

Phoenix wouldn't be such a likeable guy were it not for some inaccuracies in the game's dialogue. Sure, a few teeny things might get lost in translation but it's a fair price to pay for the protagonist to not sound robotic. Also, the use of western pop culture references is sometimes a good idea. Now that's out of the way, I'd just say Phoenix is goofy, makes a fair share of "dad jokes", a little socially awkward at times but highly courageous when battling against some of the top prosecutors. His iconic catchphrases are known widely across the internet (e.g. "Objection!", "Hold it!", "Take that!"), even to those who've never touched the series.

Don't worry Mantis, you're not the only one to have forgotten about him.

Hyde sat alone, at the end of some backstreet alleyway, waiting for the day that someone might need him again. But alas, with his creators gone, all he could do was sit in silence. Not even Nintendo could save him now.

Poor Hyde! Here's a beer, on the house! Let me just smack those two clowns away from them. And how about a ribeye and some pool?

It's okay man, it's oh so lonely here too right now... (Activity flatlined somehow.)

Favorite villain is easy. Zagi from Tales of Vesperia. He's a fantastic recurring villain, and has a fantastic final battle. I just love that the only reason he fights is because he loves fighting Yuri, who is the only person he has even lost too. Everythi he does is to get stronger so he can keep fighting Yuri.even when the world is about to be destroyed, he only cares about fighting Yuri again. He's such a well done character.

I can't think of a favorite hero, though. Have to think about this one a bit more.

    Activity!

Back to the topic though, I played a lot of Tales of Vesperia. Alas, it was nearly a decade ago and I don't remember that villain. You've reminded me that I should give the game a second shot, but it seems it's remained an exclusive for last-gen consoles, even without any Xbox One backwards compatibility. Steam, publishers!

Maybe you'd like some other JRPGs like Grandia II or Lost Odyssey if you haven't played them. The hero of the former game—whilst not amongst my favourites—is a pretty fun character. Clearly he has the best facepalm.
