    Final Fantasy

I was thinking it'd be nice to have a thread for the discussion of all things Final Fantasy. Favorite game/OST? Character? Spin-off? Feel free to share whatever you like here. A new CG render was recently shown off to promote the upcoming FFVII remake. With how much I've enjoyed my time with FFXV, I'm starting get excited about this. How about you guys?

Despite having a lot of nostalgia for FFVIII growing up, FFVII is the only Final Fantasy I have played to completion, but I'd like to change that in the near future. I've been having a good time with XV since it came out, and I'd like to either try IV or VI next. This probably isn't the best way to start off the thread, but I've never been one for turn-based combat in games. What's the fun of navigating a menu to do all of your attacks? Indeed, the only thing that really pushed me to completing VII was my interest in the story and characters within. I even went through the trouble of breeding a Golden Chocobo to get Knights of the Round, and this was only a few years ago. Still, a lot of people seem to enjoy this style of gameplay, so perhaps it is simply a taste I have yet to acquire.

But enough about that, my choice for favorite OST isn't a difficult one. This is the kind of song that makes you reflect on your life, and the journey you took to get where you are now.

I love all the SNES era final fantasies, though I actually played them on GBA. I never had had a ps1 so I had never played VII until it was released for PC. I had a good time though, but like you said the story in that game is the glue. The atmosphere of that game is just so nice.

I like turn based gameplay but I think it fits better on handhelds than consoles. Bravely default, which is kind of the modern successor to retro final fantasy, has a neat little combat system where you can choose to bank up turns and use up to 4 at once. It's a neat little game, better than a lot of the stuff square makes these days.

I haven't played XV yet, can't let myself buy it until after this semester because it just seems like the type of game I would rather play than studying. Using that and maybe a Nintendo switch to try and motivate myself lol

My favourite game is (obviously) VII, though I think X has the better story, characters and music. I hate all the compilation spinoffs with a passion, haven't played the rest, although I own Tactics and Tactics Advance. I just recently bought the limited steelbook edition of XV and plan on playing it some time after I've finished IX.

I own all of the Final Fantasy Games that were remastered and/or made on the PlayStation 1(Minus Tactics). Sadly, I have not finished them all. Like most people, the first one I ever beat was Final Fantasy VII. However, I do own and played the original Final Fantasy on the NES. I beat it only on the PlayStation though so maybe one day I will go back and beat it on it's original console.

I am currently trudging through FFII because I am making it a mission to play and beat all numbered Final Fantasy Games in order.

But I implore you, Final Fantasy II isn't really fun so unless you want to beat all of the numbered FF games, don't bother with this one. The leveling mechanic just makes the game drag on for sooo long. Training takes forever even if you are using the command/cancel trick, it still takes a long time. I actually was playing it on my PS3 and got pretty far but then the game kept freezing right as I left a certain dungeon. Therefore I had to start ALL over again! This time I just played it on my PSX, so far so good.

Anywho, FF VII is my favorite of the series thus far; I've played a few of the others and watched friends play some as well but FF VII to me is just a big nostalgic trip. I remember getting it and playing it for so many hours, either by myself or with friends, just to see what was to come.

I love that game so much that my first tattoo I ever got was the tribal design that Red XIII has above the Roman numeral for 13. Of course there is another reason to that but the point is still the same. A lot of people say that VI is the best one and maybe they are right but to me it's still very hard to beat what VII meant to me as well to the developers who made it. The whole theme of the game is about Loss and Identity. If you want almost a school report on that game taking about its themes and story, check out The Completionist's videos for Final Fantasy VII. He and a few others talk about the game and what makes it so great, they discuss the backstory as well as Advent Children's meaning.

You can't just tell us about that tattoo and not show us! Come on man, that sounds cool as hell. Show us a picture. Nanaki is the one character I kept in my party at all times.

I'll keep that in mind about FFII, maybe it's a good thing that the 'FFII' you guys got in the US was a much better game altogether. FFVII is easily my favorite as well, and from what I've seen of the other games in the series, I don't see that changing. They hit all the right notes, with the characters, setting and overall story... though there is plenty of room for improvement on the graphical end of things, I'm worried that the remake may ending up losing some of the 'charm' of the original. I think you guys know what I'm talking about.

I agree with you rat that these types of game are best played on a handheld, they're generally the kind of thing you want to be able to come back to quickly to chip a few more hours in. Good for playing in bed, I think.

I'm not especially big on the 'expanded universe' VII content either, Example. Advent Children, while an impressive visual spectacle with a generous amount of fanservice, was an unnecessary sequel that only served to back-pedal on Cloud's character development for seemingly no reason other than to make a film out of it. I've considered checking out Last Order, though I'm not sure if it's any better.

Hahahaha fine. Only because you asked nicely. Final Fantasy-img_1172-jpg

It looks bad but I'm also still wearing my work shirt and it's turned but I swear it's good!

But yeah it's not worth the play through man. It's rough to play in its entirety. And Last Order is like a 30 minute anime video I believe? It's just an anime depiction of the Nibelheim incident with Zack, Cloud, Toda, and Sephirorth along with the aftermath. It's worth a watch it's not bad at all. Much better than Advent Children hahaha

The only good takeaway from Advent Children is the theme of moving on and to not hold a grudge. I can't get the spoiler tags to work on the phone so I won't put any spoilers down but you know why Cloud is depressed. It's just a movie based upon him moving on from the past. Other than that the movie sucks ha.

Damn, that's cool! I love subtle tattoo's like this, since not only do they look good in their own right, but it's a neat conversation starter for anyone who might be familliar with the game. I'll never understand people who get bloody Superman tatooed to their chest.

Hahahah thanks man! And definitely! I mean one of the reasons while I got this tattoo is because of FFVII but it represents a dog my sister had who I always named Red XIII when I played it as a kid. Unfortunately he was killed by another dog at a young age so this was me commemorating and remembering him in my own special way.

But yeah Superman tattoos suck. Batman is better

That's sad to hear about the poor little guy. The owner should have taken better control of their dog, harsh to say but I hope it got put down after that.

    Here's to you, little Red...

Ha thanks Hari. The dog did not get put down after everything that happened but I honestly don't blame the dog but the owner. He used to beat the dog with a bat and chain him up in the back yard. To me it wasn't the dogs fault, it was the owners. But that's a different story for a different time.

Plowing ahead here, I have to ask, how many of you have played Final Fantasy Tactics in its entirety? Such a damn good game. It might not be numbered but it should definitely be counted towards the Main Final Fantasy Series and not just a spin off. One of the most developed stories I have ever had the pleasure to experience within a game. Hell, it beats most movies to me as well. I daresay it is more involving and entertaining at times over Final Fantasy VII. Don't get me wrong, FFVII is still my favorite game but FF Tactics is RIGHT THERE when it comes to how good it is.

Plus Cloud is in it, so how could you NOT like it?!
