    Fun free games??

Are there any fun free games you can play online with other people?

I am trying to find about 5 or so of them to have going with a group of online friends of mine. We are always looking for things to do on the computer. We have app games which are fine but not everyone wants to sit on their phone for a few hours playing. The games don't have to be on steam but then need to be multiplayer and free. Any ideas?

Testing free games has been my specialty for 4 years, i even alpha tested some.
Here are five very good free : star wars the old republic (by bioware), MechWarrior, Wot/Wow, Grand Fantasy (more for kids but very good for newbies), Tera and some others...

Often when it comes to PC gaming you get what you pay for. (Talking relatively, of course there are some great sales.) Of course there are some MMOs you can play that are funded by micro-transactions, or you could get a one-month trial of a subscription MMO. However, I think you should consider spending maybe just ten dollars each on a multiplayer game. If you agreed to this you'd have an incredible amount of choice. That's certainly worth the cost of two coffees in my opinion. What size is your group?
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Thanks for your recommendations guys. I should have specified that the games need to be easy on the computer. Not all of them have gaming PCs, I think 2 of them are on laptops. I have looked into free "minecraft" alternatives and they all suck. I know a lot of free MMO games are great, like Guild Wars is a good example I actually enjoy but only one person of the 5 could actually play it on his PC.

I think that the perfect solution for your problem (laptop gaming, free2play) would have to be MOBAs. They are easy on the hardware, and most don't require you to pay anything while at the same time they are incredible time sinks.

Recently I have really enjoyed Battlerite which is a free game on Steam (has recently gone free2play) and back in summer I've played a bit of Brawlhalla which is basically Smash for PC and it's completely free too.

Both of these games should run on a toaster if you get the settings right.

I think the key question here is how many of you are there, since if it's more than 5 then MOBAs, for example, wouldn't work out.

I actually did install and play a bit of Brawlhalla back when it was still newish and loved it. I haven't played in some time and tried the other day and it feels so different now. I am not sure what they changed but man do I suck at that game now! I could see if the laptops can handle that one.

As for the number, 7 if we are all playing.

I would have to recommend Fortnite Battle Royale to you. It is one of the best free games that is available right now and everyone is loving it at the moment. It is available on PC, PlayStation 4 and XBox One. Not sure whether it is coming to Switch anytime soon but the team that made the game did tease users on Twitter about it. Fortnite is basically a cartoon version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds but for me it is better because it lets you build with materials that you can harvest. So if someone starts shooting, you can just build a quick base and get the higher ground so that you have the advantage. At first, I didn't want to even try it out because of the cartoon aspect but I am absolutely addicted to the game at the moment.
