    Do you guys play Minecraft?

I know it's been around for ages, but I never gave it much thought. The graphics made me think of playing with Lego's, so I kind of ignored it. I've been reading recently that Minecraft is a lot of fun to play. You can spend a little or a lot of time on it, playing competitively or not. You can just build stuff, if that's your thing.

Have you tried it? Did you think it was fun?

Oh man, I started playing Minecraft long before it became the sensation among pre-teens it is today. Back in 2010, you'd have been hard-pressed to find someone who knew what the heck 'Minecraft' is. I'm not trying to sound like a hipster here, just keep in mind that there was a time where Minecraft was a lot more obscure than it is today, before YouTube e-celebrities ended up bolstering it's popularity.

Back in the 'Indev' days, it was more a game about survival than anything else. Whenever you spawned a new world, you'd start off in a little wooden shack and would have to start from there. Gotta get wood so you can make tools, then stone so you can make better ones, but most importantly you'd need coal, which (unless you were unlucky) could be found several layers underground. If you couldn't find coal, you'd may as well have killed yourself, because when the sun sets is when monsters come out, and let me tell you... back in 2010, there wasn't anything much more unsettling than the sound of a zombie skulking about outside your shelter, or the rattling bones of a skeleton archer. You'd spend hours building up your fortifications, mining deep undergroup to find precious resources, with the constant threat of death looming over you. See, when you died-- that was it. There were no continues. All of your hard work would be lost forever, which really lended a sense of gravity to the whole thing. It's probably hard to believe that such a simple, cutesy looking game could be as unnervingly terrifying as it is, but there were times where I was up at late at night and simply couldn't bring myself to play because of how scary it was. Similarly to how I was too scared to play Resident Evil 4 by myself, waiting for a friend to come over so we could endure it together, Minecraft was often something me and a friend would cautiously struggle through together. There was nothing more unnerving than suddenly hearing one of these noises as you mined in the dark.

I'd like to think Minecraft could still have that kind of effect on people, but who knows? All I'll say is, don't judge the game based on how your typical YouTube kiddies make it seem. I definitely think it's a game worth checking out if you haven't played it before, though I haven't played it in a while, it's probably the most fun I've had with online multiplayer-- playing with friends, that is.

Wow, I smiled the whole time I was reading your post. Very well written and highly descriptive. I enjoyed it, and I do believe I would enjoy such a game. I had no idea it could be so involved or so intense. Those sound effects are pretty good too. Thanks for the audio.

Um, I wouldn't be able to play something like Resident Evil, even with someone beside me, ha ha. Not my thing.

A little bit scary is good enough for me. The Minecraft version sounds exciting. I like that sense of "fear" that keeps you on your toes. I remember that sensation from when I first started gaming, when I had no idea what to expect as I entered a game or a new zone. It's exhilarating.

I definitely prefer multiplayer. I used to have some WoW friends that also played, so I'll have to see if I can get in touch and check it out.

I didn't check this game out even when I always saw videos about it on Youtube. but recently, I borrowed my nephew's handheld console and asked him what games he had installed. He said the only game I can play is Minecraft so I gave it a shot. He taught me how the controls work and where to go, what to do stuff like that. It got me occupied for an hour or two. I wouldn't say I didn't like the game, it was really cool even though the game looked like retro. I liked playing with it but I got a bit dizzy because of the movements I made. It was a lot of fun to play but it isn't my kind of game.

kids can be the best teachers sometimes, am I right?

Uh oh, it's probably not going to work for me then. I am glad that you mentioned the dizzy part though, @Working Buck. I have had issue like this before with other games. I cannot play Spyro for the life of me, for example, ha ha.

If the movement is going to make me feel sick, I guess I'll have to stay away. I'll just have to continue my search for a new game to play.

I've seen Minecraft and got curious about it since I love building stuffs so I tried to play it but then I can't seem to enjoy it. Sure there are some people who enjoy Minecraft, one of them would be my nephew who's addicted with the game. I think it's a good game though but instead of playing it, I'd rather play other building games with cool graphics and a free one.

Do you have any recommendations for other, similar games, @Mojari? I wouldn't even mind paying for a great, fun, game, but yeah, free is always good too.

I love making stuff in real life. I think building stuff in a game would be very entertaining and enjoyable.

Why couldn't you get into it? Was it mainly the graphics? Did you like the gameplay?

To me, it was fun for a few days then got boring pretty quickly and especially if I don't have the patience, time and imagination to build something nice. I tried it for a few days and looking online for crafting combinations was kind of annoying. Once I got the hang of it, I started building a pretty nice house and such. Once I was done with it, I planned to make a city. I got about 20% of it done then I started drifting away from MineCraft. ''I'll finish it later, maybe tomorrow'' etc. until I completely left the game. I liked it and it was fun so maybe one day I'll finish my city. ''One day.''
