Thread: What is happening with Steam right now?

I saw a few memes about China launching its own Steam next week for Chinese only citizens. I am confused by this.

What is happening that is causing this split? Does this have to do with what can and can't be played in China or something? I know they are pretty strict with people's freedoms over there but it just seems random to me.

Shit is as shit does. China likes 100% control over everything, because the CCP is laughably insecure.

I'm sure that's it. Steam is pretty expansive & I bet the CCP doesn't like the idea of indie games on the platform that can challenge narratives or certain AAA games that say things they don't like.

There's a Chinese company called Perfect World that ran something kind of like a Steam China for years with Valve games on it but now they're the ones handling the full client. Of course, the CCP will do everything they can to stop people using global Steam. That being said, it doesn't bother me much since it won't have an impact on the global client.

While I feel sorta bad for the Chinese users, this is pretty much all there is to the situation.
