    Last of Us II Backlash?

I know what happens and get a general idea of why the community of fans are mad but is the game really that bad? It looks nice to me and from what I have watched of others playing it, it seems like it would be fun to play. I just am not sure if this is general reaction culture at it again tanking reviews or if people who were fans of the first one are legit this upset.

What is the deal with this game?

Since I'm not a console gamer I wouldn't know. From what I've seen I wouldn't say it looks like a bad game, but it certainly does not look like a 10/10 game across the board. That all seems very "under the table" to me. Having said that, the review bombings on Metacritic don't really do much to convince me it's a bad game either. Amongst all the lazy reviews there are a few that caught my eye, one being:

As someone who is normally a fan of Naughty Dog games and of the original Last of Us, I feel this game is a slap in the face. If you enjoyed the first game because of the story, characters and relationships, this game is not for you. Due to some questionable story-line choices, the game feels like a slog to get through and tries to force its players into a middle school ethics class rather than engross us in an enthralling story. The graphics are some of the best this generation, but the game-play rarely features anything innovative and feels like more of the same as the first game. Overall, averaging everything out I would give this game a 5/10 and similar to Game of Thrones season 8 and Star Wars - Rise of Skywalker, this is one sequel that will sorely disappoint even its most loyal fans.

    Graphics - 9/10
    Gameplay - 5/10
    Story - 1/10

    Overall - 5/10
I've got to admit, those story criticisms have put me off. Even if the games started coming to PC, it always irks me when a series eventually becomes very... er, PC! It's happened to TV shows I've watched and oftentimes I drop the show if the story suffers as a result of shoehorning irrelevant politics. I'd feel the same way about games.

Speaking of PlayStation exclusives, it's nice to see that Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to Steam. I never looked into the game before but after watching the PS5 trailer of the sequel I am interested.

Was never really interested in this game. Hell, I never really understood the appeal of the first one. It was a typical zombie apocalypse game that wasn't really doing anything different than what other games of that ilk were doing at the time but because it had a feelsy story, that somehow made it the greatest game of all time. Apparently, there are options in the game that allows you bypass puzzles and stuff because, you know, who wants to play videogames for the gameplay? Hell, looking at some of the footage of it, it looks like you're uber linear, cinematic action game that gives you constant tutorials because the game assumes that you're an idiot that never touched a videogame in your life.

So yeah, at the end of the day, I'm just here for the shitshow. We'll be hearing soon from game journalist how this is the epitome of videogames as an artform, how it is one of the most brilliant games ever made and that it's mere prescence will summon Jesus Christ and Gandalf The White to come down from the heavens to fix all of the world's problems and that anyone who even kind of, sort of dislikes this game is an alt-right, russian bot who supports gamergate and wants all gays and trans people to be wiped from the face of the earth. Honestly, seeing people's reaction to all this and the memes it's spawning is priceless.

The memes are everywhere. It is actually what caught my attention about the game. I don't know how people can just say "oh you don't like it because there are gay people in it!" when plenty of other stories have had gay characters and did just fine. GTA V had a bisexual man that everyone seemed to love. I see a lot of arguments about it being because the main characters you play as are female and that is why people hate the game. Where were they when Metroid was a thing? Or Tomb Raider? These people are not very bright.

it is as bad as you hear. i've made it through most of the cutscenes and 2 of my close friends finished them all. i've watched plenty of reviews and it all comes down to a lack of substance and agenda pushing. This wouldn't be so bad if the first game was like this too, but you can see the clear shift in priorities from 1 to 2.

From what i've seen the gameplay itself is solid, but it's interrupted all the time for cutscenes so Naughty Dog can push its politics into the mix. Even that would be fine if the characters were built up a bit, but they're each introduced like parts of a checklist. Black, Hispanic, Asian, and every color of the LGBT rainbow one by one. It's just so transparent and cringy. The characters have no depth beyond their sexuality or gender, it really plays out more like a Tumblr fanfiction than an action video game.

It's okay to not like a shallow, pandering story. It doesn't make anyone sexist, racist, or any other -ist to prefer well written games.

Firstly, I'd like to say I have no attachment to the franchise.

In my friend group there are two people currently playing the game, and somehow managed to dodge all of the spoilers. I just keep asking them for updates where they are in the story.

    Spoiler
My main question is, "Have you gotten to the 'Oh fuck.' moment?" They took that to mean when Joel is killed. Neither one has made it to the point where the game forces you to play as Abby, the person who murders Joel, for the second half of the game. I understand that they are trying to make you, the player, empathetic towards her character. My problem is that doesn't transfer to Ellie. Ellie only sees Abby as the person who brutally murdered her father figure. She goes on this quest for revenge and then...just walks away? Seems like poor writing to me.

I've enjoyed watching the shitstorm brew between the two camps. In fact, it's the only reason this game is even on my radar.

By far this is my favorite thing posted about The Last of Us 2.

The part that frustrates me the most about this entire fiasco isn't anything Naughty Dog did, but rather Sony. As a lot of us know, Sony has been censorship-happy for the past 2-3 years. We can't have uncensored Nekopara, we can't have goofy Senran Kagura anime girls (the games come out, but delayed several months and censored to an extent), and Sony of America just flat out refuses to localize plenty of others. .......but we can have a full-blown hardcore gay sex scene in TLOU2. I'm not upset that the game contains a sex scene, I'm upset at the hypocrisy. Nintendo and Steam have followed suit as well, censoring some of their more risque titles.

Either all of it's okay or none of it's okay.

I agree, albeit I'd put the blame at least partially on Naughty Dog for the direction Sony went in. I remember Sony was like the big weeb console with so many japanese games. I'd say around the time the first Last of Us came out and got the acclaim that it got, that made Sony change gears and make themselves the art house console. Notice that Sony made a lot of games that were "cinematic" (The Order: 1886, God of War 2018, Detroit: Become Human). Naturally, Sony doesn't want to scare away the liberal art house douchebags so they have to crack down a bit on the fan servicy anime games because that's icky while the sex scene in the Last of Us 2 is AOK because, hey, it's artistic and deep as fuck.
