I'm debating whether I should get it because I own the original with the Pocket Station.

I think it's great that FFVIII is being remastered with a new/rewritten game engine. It pretty much goes without saying that it getting any kind of attention is good news. It's always been the underdog, which is a real shame as it's my favourite in the franchise.
Having said that, I'm in no rush to get this. I've got other games in my backlog that I should probably play sooner. (I'm still not even halfway through the Phoenix Wright trilogy.) Besides, even the original PC port already has its advantages that this doesn't have. First of all, obviously it isn't censored like this one has been. Secondly, for some stupid reason, DotEmu hasn't upscaled the pre-rendered backgrounds. They've used basic anti-aliasing technology that may have been considered advanced in the 1990s. Modders, however, have added AI upscaling to Final Fantasy VIII backgrounds. Just watch this full-screen. Something DotEmu could have quite easily done themselves.
What were they thinking?!
Yeah I noticed that stuff too. I'm glad I still have my original black label copy lol either way I'm glad its getting attention. Especially for new people that want to play the older games.. It's most likely done alot quicker than most remasters and it was just a quick cash grab Especially for new people that want to play the older games.
Sure, maybe I'll actually finish the game this time.
Bro i'm going crazy with this FFVIII remaster! I'm using Primalliquid's "100% Perfect Guide" on youtube (i'm on mobile or else i'd link it here). I'm probably...12 hours in and still at Balamb because i'm getting EVERYTHING and min/maxing like crazy. It's my favorite Final Fantasy & arguably favorite game of all time (it fights for that slot with Majora's Mask). Huh...i kinda have a thing for the underdogs of popular series i guess.
Anyway, check out my FF8 thread from a while ago if you're a fan!
Completely forgot to check up on this. I'm not surprised that there are so many negative reviews on Steam, like...
This is all reminding me of the older Final Fantasy ports and Chrono Trigger, but at least they eventually fixed Chrono Trigger...
Like with many other Square-Enix ports, modders are here to save the day. I'm fine with waiting if PC—courtesy of customers—will soon have the superior remaster.
Oh yeah, that reminds me. There's a game I'm looking forward to way more than FFVIII.
I'm saying that as somebody whose favourite game is Final Fantasy VIII. I love Grandia and I can't wait to play Grandia I and II again. (The others aren't on Steam, and they're not nearly as good anyway.) The only downside to Grandia HD is that a lot of the graphics are based on the PS1 version, not the superior Saturn version. The amount of complaints about this amuses me, considering it was only released on the Saturn in Japan. Fortunately, the developers have said they'll work hard to change this. And I get the feeling they're far more likely to improve their port than Square-Enix!
FFVIII doesn't have any scene like this.
I'm not surprised by the negative reviews either. I think I'm overlooking a lot of the shortcomings of the Remaster because of how huge of a fan I am. I've rearranged all my FF VIII Extra Soldier and Monster figures so I can see them while I'm playing, lol. I even have the Japanese ones with the Ragnarok pieces!
Anyway, I got it on PS4 because that's what I play most of the time and it was ready to go day 1. That being said I WILL be buying the PC version once the modders finish sorting things out. I agree with the negative reviews to be honest, visually they just updated models and very few gameplay mechanics beyond that. What I didn't realize is that they were only updating "interactable" character models, but that wasn't even fully true either. For example, when Cid sees you off for your SeeD Exam mission, he doesn't move at all, thus he turns into this pixelated monster while everyone around him looks great. By "interactable" they mean that the model moves, because you can interact (speak) with him in that scene. Regardless, it feels so good to play FF8 again after 2 years, I'm collecting everything and having a great time. There's a lot of Draw farming to do, so I've been getting through a lot of podcasts and youtube videos I've been putting off. Besides, i'm so tired by the time I get home and start playing games that I need something that isn't too mentally challenging kinda like endless Drawing of magic at 3x speed, hahaha.
Modders will save this Remaster, but let's not forget the state that Squeenix released this in when we look back on it in the future. They updated the bare minimum for this to be a separate product from the original. The FMVs and backgrounds are shamelessly blurry and pixelated, it's frankly embarrassing in many scenes.
It kind of does. The characters being late-teens makes it a lot less impactful though.

"It turned out that the ghost was just Mr. Finley, who ran the amusement park. The spooky part is that, as soon as the ghost appeared, the teenagers' dog began to speak! And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"
Yeah it's still my favorite FF to this day. I still have the original strategy guide somewhere in my house lol
Yeah i heard about those modders they willl do a good job I bet. I only ever played Grandia 2 for Dreamcast but it was a good game. I might get this but I aslo nver got a chance to play Skies of Arcadia heard it was a good game too. You ever played that?
