    Lunar: Silver Star Story

I've never been a big fan of JRPGS. Mainly because I don't like turn based combat since I'm not one to wait my turn to kick someone's ass. However, there is one exception to this rule and that's Lunar: Silver Star Story. I remember I used to watch my older brother play this on the Sega CD wayback in the day and just kind of fascinated with the world it presented. I remember a number of years later my brother bought it for the PS1 and I do remember playing it. It's kind of been on my mind lately as I've been looking up clips on youtube. I guess what draws me into it is it's just sort of a quaint fantasy adventure tale. It's not some bleak Berserk/Game of Thrones style take on it or some ironic spit-take on it. It was just a sincere, old fashioned heroic story where the lead characters are genuinely good people who take on a greater evil and, in a age of cynicism, I find that refreshing. I would like to pick up a copy and replay it one of these days. I just wanted to see if anyone else had memories of this game.

Seriously though, Yeah! I've got Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar2 on PS1 in the big boxes (did you/your brother have the thick case ones with all the extra shit? Cloth map, character standees, etc?). I can take a pic of them when I get home. Didn't expect to see a thread about Lunar pop up on here. You're my favorite.

He did get the big ass special edition. I don't remember the character standees but I definitely remember the cloth map and it had a thick book that had interviews with the creators. I even think it had lyrics that Luna sings in the middle of the game. It's probably still back at my folk's place under God knows what. I missed out on the 2nd game. Wasn't there like another sequel or spin off that came out on the Nintendo DS at one point too or is my mind playing a cruel trick on me?

Hey, I forgot to follow up on this! Every night when I sit in my game room I see my Lunar boxes up on the shelf by my TV and think "I really need to get around to showing Starwind what I was talking about." Well........I'm going in to work late today so I have a bit of time while I relax.

Here's the box set for Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete

Relatively simple stuff you still find in Collector's Editions to this day, but the build quality is a lot higher. I read an interview with the publisher once (and I can't remember where I read this so take it with a few cups of salt) who said they went so overboard with the quality because they didn't expect to sell many copies. Wikipedia confirms that at least the first shipment of this game sold at retail were exclusively Collector's Edition copies. Basically, they expcted low sales numbers due to the niche fanbase & release date delays so they made certain that every single sale was a marked-up collector's edition. That must have worked out well for them because they made enough $$$ to release Lunar 2, and got even more funky with it:

There's....a lot to unpack about this release, but you can Google to your heart's content if you wanna know more. The interesting thing was that there was an additional pre-order bonus to this mountain of stuff:

A Ghaleon "punching puppet". I guess you stick your fingers in his arms and he can...punch or something. I don't have this thing and I don't really want it lol. They're on ebay/Amazon for less than $30 for any other Boomers out there who may be looking for this.

They even planned one for Alex and never released it:

...and that's all! I may follow up later with a picture of my personal copies just for fun but that's really all I know. You've probably played more of the games than I have but they are nearing the top of my backlog so I will be playing through both this Winter, presumably.

Man, that is really cool! I knew at the time that it was a favorite among JRPG fans but I never would've guess it was to the point where the special edition sold out like crazy. I'm actually surprised that it never got a big of a following as Final Fantasy has, though some would argue that's a good thing. As I mentioned, I missed out on the 2nd game but I would love to give it a shot one day. I'd love to replay the original too but I just have to either find a copy or try to get a good PS1 emulator to run it. Don't know when I'll get to it since I got a bit of a backlog myself (Still need to get to Metal Wolf Chaos XD). But yeah, I think it'll be fun to see your personal collection.
