    Maneater

You know, what makes video games great is the variety of characters you can play as in many different games. Soldiers, fantasy adventurers, mythical beings and the like. However, there is one character you don't get to play as very often...a GOD DAMN SHARK. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to get this game. It's not the first game to do it but it's such a novel concept that isn't done that much that I just had to get it since it stands out from a lot of the games that get released these days. I've been playing it for the past few hours and it's been a mighty good time. The game does have a story, though it's somewhat barebones but it's amusingly presented as a Deadliest Catch-style reality show that shows your mother getting captured and killed by a shark hunter leaving you to go on a quest to reach adult hood all the while eating fish, alligators and, of course, humans. All the while a documentary narrator is describing the situation as well as offering some humorous musings. As you can probably gather at this point, the game doesn't take itself seriously. Your shark can do some pretty over the top things like smash boats and you can even chase people on land for a short period of time. In fact, the game has a somewhat Saints Row vibe with the neon looking city in some of the backgrounds above water and some cartoonishly over the top characters you go up against. Like, I actually found myself getting shot at by the mafia...why the mafia is out hunting sharks is anyone's guess but OK, sure. In the mean time, you find crates and eat fish to get resources to upgrade your character and level up. I haven't gotten too far in the game but apparently, you can unlock stuff like bone armor for your shark.

It's not a perfect game. I'm playing the game on PS4 and noticed some frame rate dips and the graphics can go out of whack at times. Also, the missions and activities do feel samey so it's probably not a game to play in long bursts. It's not going to be on anyone's game of the year list anytime soon but if you want to play something that you don't get to see very often, then I'd say it's worth picking up.

Seriously though I do know what you mean. I think people miss out on a lot of the escapism games can offer when they only play as the same realistic dude-man with gun over and over. I heard about this Maneater game and thought it looked pretty funny/cool. If you were actually able to sink several hours into it, perhaps I should check it out.

Just noticing now that you, me, and Mantis are all online and posting. Feels good, bruh. Got the band back together on the forums tonight!

As it should be. We're like the mother fucking A-Team.

Now if only we can convince Mantis to get over his fear of the chi-coms and join us on zoom, then we'd be cooking with gas.

But yeah, I agree with your sentiments. What makes video games such a unique medium is you're imagination is pretty much endless. You can create any setting and characters you so desire yet either a lot of publishers just want to play safe or a lot of gamers don't want to go outside of their comfort zone. Don't get me wrong, I love being the super-soldier one man army guy. Hell, those are some of my favorite games but when you get a game like Maneater, it just makes you wonder "Holy crap, I haven't thought of that. Why aren't more developers taking advantage of a concept like this?". It's a fairly unique concept for a game that I felt that I should support it to help encourage more developers to think outside of the box.

But yeah, I'd say it's worth playing. Like I mentioned, it's probably not going be a life changing experience but if you want to wreck shit as a shark or just encourage developers to come up with more out there ideas for games, then I'd so go for it.
