    Let's play some Diablo 2!

For those who don't know, Diablo 2 is a hack-and-slash RPG released in 2000 which sees you slaying all manner of baddies and beasties, collecting valuable treasures, and exploring a dark fantasy world. It's also fucking awesome. I've played the game on and off since release, and I've decided to dive back in once again; so I'd love for any of you guys or gals on the Nexus to come and join me!

Whether you're a returning vet or would like to try D2 for the first time, now's your chance. For anyone already familiar with the game, I will note though, I play hardcore mode (if your character dies, it's lost forever), and I play singleplayer, so multiplayer is accomplished via peer-to-peer direction connection instead of battle.net servers. If you're interested, let me know and we can work out the specifics (time zone differences, etc) and get to smashing some demons.

Ah Diablo 2...now that is a name I haven't heard in a long time.

I can join ya. Sadly, I no longer have a physical copy of Diablo 2 so I'd have to resort to buying the online copy off of Blizzard's store. Don't know if peer-to-peer still works with that version but if we can get it to work, I would totally be down for it.

Do you guys prefer Diablo or Diablo 2? I play so many single-player games that I have a really bad habit of mix-maxing everything I'm doing and taking my time. When I played Diablo (once) the guy I was playing with just started hauling ass IMMEDIATELY when we loaded in and killed shit, picked up random stuff, and left other stuff laying around. Is the game so easy that you don't really need to pay attention? Am I so bad at it that only I need to pay attention?

As I understand it's a "loot game" so you're supposed to gobble up stuff on the ground and keep running, but is there a defined point where you stop and re-equip yourself?

Needless to say I never played Diablo with that guy again and I didn't learn anything from the experience. I might like to join y'all if I can figure it out and you're going to explain some stuff to me. How many players are supported?

Diablo 2 is a game of two halves: the first is spent running around and killing monsters, looking for loot, etc., But the other half is pretty much all downtime. You'll find yourself selling and buying goods, trading with other players, gambling for rare items, crafting and upgrading items using various forging materials, comparing stats between equipment items to see which are best to use, organizing your inventory, deciding on how to invest stat and skill points, etc. Even while engaging in combat, you'll constantly be taking time to stop and strategize.

If you really wanted to, yeah, you could enjoy the game as a casual hack and slash. However, doing so would not only stunt your character, but if you're playing hardcore mode, it will guarantee a quick death (and subsequently, the loss of all your hard work). Playing hardcore is a much different experience than playing the normal mode of the game. In hardcore mode, you have only one life, and if you die, your character is lost forever, so you really HAVE to spend a lot of time considering your actions or you're not going to make it very far. One mistake can be the difference between finding a treasure trove of rare items, or losing the level 99 Necromancer you've had for 5 years. Hardcore is really the only way to play Diablo 2, and while it is emotionally crushing if you die, the sheer adrenaline you get from the knowledge that you could is what makes it an amazing experience. So yes, this is a loot game with brains, and it is anything but easy.

I would definitely recommend giving it a shot, especially if the original Diablo is your only experience with the series, as it is a much different game from D2.

Ahh i see. Thanks for the explanation. It sounds like something I would enjoy, because I'm not interested in just running and grabbing loot. I want to take some time to consider my "build", if that makes sense.

Look up some youtube videos of the game played on hardcore, or just download it yourself and give it a try. It really is a lot of fun, and the game does cater to a thoughtful playstyle like you're describing.

On a side note to you and Starwind55, when are you guys typically free to play? If at any point either of you would like to join me, let's get a game going.

I'm pretty much available for that as well. Some Fridays or Saturdays, I might be out on the town but for the most part I'll be around. I'm usually available around the same time as Zem (I'm central time).

Thanks for the offer, but I could never get into this game genre.

I don't think I can either, I'm just gonna give it a second shot though and double check since the first time I played I was thoroughly confused
