    The Random Number God

    The Random Number God-rngesus-png

Also known as the ultimate "Fuck You!" in gaming.

The Random Number God is always with us, perhaps in real life too. In video games, he is most apparent in turn-based games but is present even in real-time games. We just don't notice it in faster-paced games, but so much is determined by random numbers. However random though, sometimes we feel the Random Number God is working with us, or against us. For example, I've been playing Pokémon Trading Card Game for the Game Boy today. So, the other day I beat five opponents in a row including a gym leader and a grand master without too much difficulty. This random-ass girl called Amanda keeps beating me though. I've ended up thinking the Random Number God is just having a bit of fun, like a cat playing with a mouse. I've just been really fucking unlucky.

As you'd expect, there are lots of coin flips in this card game. Also as you'd expect, a tails means you can't do the intended action, like having the first turn, executing a particular attack or effect, and so on. I counted, and for the last couple of attempts I got heads only three out of twenty-five flips. I mean, what the hell? This is only happening with Amanda. She's in bed with the RNG, dammit! I also sometimes play a game called 100% Orange Juice with friends, including Hari, Juneberry and Melubnio from this forum. Sometimes you can win by a large margin five games in a row, or disastrously fail five times. At that point, it doesn't feel quite so random when it's a game that probably has a 4/5 likelihood of victory determined by luck.

I guess I made this thread to hear about others' stories of their worst encounters with the Random Number God, sometimes known as RNGesus. Have you ever experienced repeated failure without justification? Hopefully you didn't break anything.

Pokemon has the biggest shrine to RNGesus in all of gaming. There are SO many things left up to RNG in pokemon.
From % chances to cause status inflictions, to the statuses themselves (paralysis has a 50% chance to make you not attack at all, as does confusion, WITH the added joy of you hitting yourself for damage), to moves accuracy, to chances of finding a shiny pokemon. Basically, you can be totally fucked over by RNGesus in pokemon, or it can be your best friend. It all depends on how that being feels that day lol.

Mantis, you've seen a fair bit of my luck with RNG-sama during 100% OJ games (Hari has seen the wrath as well).

I think my first story to come to mind is that time you filled that snowy map with traps as Krila and I managed to land in them enough times to die five times just from constantly landing on them.

You, my friend, RNG-sama loved. Me, on the other hand, it has a vendetta against.

Ill give my steam info tomorrow. Had to get my computer repaired, as the CPU, was getting overheated, so they had to install a new one, and fix up the thermal paste.
But that game sounds pretty fun.
OH! I just thought of a hysterical RNG moment . My friends and I play Baulders Gate 2 sometimes (an older RPG based on D&D) and my friend plays a chaotic mage, which means randomly his spells will do something totally random, and when he tried to use magic missile on a boss, he changed its gender instead. Not really what he wanted lol.

That's a unique sounding game, one I ought to try. Plus that result...fantastic!
Today in OJ: RNG planted a bomb under my butt. I forget if it was Mantis it hit instead of me.

I'm digressing here, but it would be handy to have more of us on Steam, or rather the Outlaw Star Nexus group for the sake of convenience. I'd try to sort out those weekend gaming nights again, but I've gotta be honest and say it's a pain in the ass to arrange. I'll blame RNG for this.

I did actually beat that girl in the Pokémon TCG. Funnily enough I did so by choosing my weakest deck against her. See what I mean about RNG's sense of humour? Also, didn't RNG also place a bomb under my butt in 100% OJ?
