    Old School

Does anyone play older games through emulators? I've been thinking of buying a premium license for LaunchBox to give myself something really nice and aesthetic. I've spent months going down the list for a number of consoles and handhels to have a nice little gaming ark. Both because some roms are really difficult to find these days due to certain companies, and because it seems like a lot of emulation-focused sites just seem to be shutting down.

A whole lot of games are impossible to buy now, even going through whatever gimped digital stores that offer very select titles. Without emulation, I really do think that a lot of people are going to miss out on not just the history of different consoles, but they're going to miss out on timeless classics that just couldn't be done today if they tried.

I do for sure. I play on mame for old arcade stuff like Rastan, Eswat, and a whole bunch of others. I'm actually planning on firing up Resident Evil 2 using ePSX though I'm thinking about trying it on Duckstation because I've been hearing that it's the superior PS1 emulator.

I hear ya about people missing out. Didn't coolroms bite the dust recently? While I don't think it will be missed out entirely, I do agree that it'll be more difficult for players to play more classical games, especially since you have to wade through a bunch of malware addled sites to find some decent roms. This wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't for the fact that, the PS5 in particular, doesn't off backwards compatibility for it's older games. We might get a remaster of some classic games but that niche game you enjoy playing? Well, you're shit out of luck on that one.

Coolroms is still around and quite lively. They just removed their Nintendo libraries due to the take downs. I'm glad I got a covered SNES/GBA/GBC/GameCube/DS library as well. I'm sure there may be a handful of titles I'm still missing somehow but I'll find them if I'm looking. 3DS roms are out there now. My 3DS is still fine and well but it's sad to see that they've officially retired it. I couldn't help but buy Etrian Odyssey Nexus and Persona Q 2 as soon as they came out, since they're the last titles to do so. What a way to end a console's life, since Etrian Odyssey rocked the handheld world for two consoles.

I haven't ever heard of Duckstation until now, I'll have to check them out. I've heard that there's the occasional better emulator out there, but there's not really many people out there that use emulators at all.

Emuparadise still works if you get Tampermonkey for Chrome, GreaseMonkey for Firefox. Then install the Workaround Script.

Now enjoy any downloads that were previously taken down by Nintendo.

Due to my ark and months of collecting, thankfully I'm immune to any site going down now. There are a lot of nice romhacks and JP only games that have been translated but those tend to be their own little category of roms to hunt for.

You ever try Evergrace? That one is my go-to forgotten PS2 game when the topic comes up. It was a launch game or very close to launch, and I think it spent most of its time in development as a Playstation 1 game, so it has a lot of jank but the atmosphere & music in that game transport me to another world.

I also spent a lot of time with Metropolismania, which I never heard anyone but myself talk about. Played some Dr. Muto as well, which doesn't get much attention these days. do you guys remember Mr. Mosquito??? What a weird game.

I played Dr. Muto on the original Xbox, I've watched a few live streams of people playing Mr. Mosquito and it is indeed a weird game.
