    Tales Games

Has anyone played any of the Tales Games?

I just finished my first run of Tales of the Abyss, and I played through Vesperia a while back and I love both games to bits. I think I like Abyss's story a bit more, but I much prefer Yuri as the main character over Like. But I love both games. The stories are great, the characters are interesting and fairly unique, and the combat is so fluid and beautiful in both games.

I broke into the Tales of series with Vesperia, and let me tell you, even though on the 360 we technically got an Alpha build with a chunk of missing plot (it's for true, broh, Microsoft done pulled a reverse embargo on the NA release!), I still thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Xillia, Xillia 2 were both great installments in their own right, and currently I am trudging through Berseria. But what I really enjoy about the Tales games isn't so much the stories as it is the fully three-dimensional characters. They have much more depth than any cast I've seen in the Final Fantasy series, plus the gameplay is extremely engaging. It provides a good challenge and actually puts you, the player, in full control of the battle, from movement to outcome. You're not at the mercy of some RNG like you are in SOME OTHER JRPG, but the numbers do dictate how well you will fare in the battles to come on top of how well you, the player, can play.

Back to the characters, I really do enjoy the main characters you take control of. Hell, even Luke in Abyss (which I have yet to play) is an awesome character and he starts off as a whiny bratty fuck. Yuri Lowell isn't your run of the mill JRPG character. He's what everyone wants to be, and it's not that hard to strive to be a Yuri Lowell. He speaks his mind, he puts his mind to what he wants/needs to get done, and he keeps his friends few and close. The average adult that we can relate to. The movie tie-in really does wonders explaining his and Flynn's bromance, which I thoroughly enjoyed in both the game and the movie. He makes a few bad decisions, and he realizes "Well, those were mistakes," and instead of dwelling on them (like SOME JRPG MAINIES), he dusts off his shoulders and changes the sails to suit the winds.

In Xillia, I loved how well fleshed out Milla and Jude were as main characters, and even with Jude being a shonen young kid, he was still more three-dimensional and relatable than most teenage mainies. He already has some knowledge of the world, and still has a long way to go in terms of learning about life, and he looks up to Milla, who is also quite a stretch from learning everything--and still starts off knowledgeable. Its plot was really great, too. What's enjoyable about the Tales series is, despite its cheerful and colorful appearance, its themes and topics are very much grim and dark. Xillia really breaks the mold with its dark story, i feel. A war between two nations, with a third one in the mix at some point, with literally the very lives of the entire world at stake. I know it don't sound like much when phrased like that, but trust me...it's got a harder impact on the player than described. Anyway...even the main boss is technically a hero. It just boils down to a battle of ideals, not a battle of "I'm the good guy, you're the bad guy."

Berseria literally makes you into an anti-hero/lawful evil. Oh yeah and Velvet Crowe has got to be my new favorite female mainie. Sorry Milla
I haven't finished Berseria quite yet, but I am loving its plot and characters and writing so far. Thank god for Erica Mendez taking up a video game role in a blockbuster JRPG, too. Really advances that woman's career, and she did killer as Ryuko Matoi.

    ...

Oh, right, the party members are all memorable in their own ways, too. Each one stands out without fitting directly into a mold of "the bad boy," "the brainy one," "the old one," because despite those stereotypical tropes, they each have dimension to them that make them all hold their own as individual characters. Rita Mordio wants to research aer and advance blastia research, and when she discovers the damage blastia is actually doing on the planet, she researches alternative energies! Alvin...my god, Alvin...when he's exposed as the liar that he was being, he really tries his damnedest to fix everything on himself first to win back his old crew's trust. He will even put himself in the line of fire in the third act to show he has remorse over almost screwing the entire world over.

I have no opinions on Berseria quite yet, so I will get back to yous on that one.

    Shit...I went on a tangent...
tl;dr Tales games are my JRPG Zeldas. Duh End.

Yeah...that's the one downside of Vesperia. NA got shafted. No Patty is easily the biggest shaft. I would love to play as her, but NOPE you don't get her.
As for favorite party members, I have to say it's Jade from Abyss. He has the perfect voice actor in English. He's got that snide asshole role down pat.

We got shafted hardcore as far as NA release was concerned, not only did we get no Patty, we also didn't get Flynn as a perma-party member, the traditional swimsuit DLC was carried over to the next release we got (and trust me, Judith in a bikini...yeah man), we lost out on several extra dungeons and optional bosses, we missed a huge chunk of plot...

I want to say my favorite party-member of all time (not main character, they're having their own battle right now) has got to be a tie between Alvin and Magilou.

Have you ever watch the Versperia movie? It's pretty decent, and it's a nice way to show when Yuri and Flynn were in the knights together. Plus, it shows Repede as a puppy, which is downright cute. They weren't able to get all the original voice actors to reprise their roles, though. Troy Baker and Sam Riegel do voice Yuri and Flynn, and the people they get to voice Estelle and Rita are REALLY good, but the new person to voice Raven doesn't even TRY to sound similar lol. I can't find a clip with him in it, sadly, but if you watch it, it's amazing how different he sounds lol.

I own the movie, got it the day it came out lol.
Yeah I was sorely disappointed that we didn't see an appearance from DC Douglas or the original Raven dude, would have been amazing to hear Wesker in a movie versus a game. That's the thing with Namco Bandai and the NA market, most VO's just switch out like underwear. Berseria has an entirely unfamiliar cast, only Magilou's voiced by someone familiar, the girl who did Nui from Kill la Kill (Erica Lindbeck?) and Elanor is voiced by Erica Mendez.

    Erica Mendez is adorbs >^^<

Oh I totally forgot! I have a really funny (I think) moment when I first fought the final boss in Vesperia. (Spoilers cuz I'm gonna mention the boss by name)
I got all 7 fell arms so I could fight all 3 forms of Duke. I went in really underleveled. By about 10 just to see how far I could get. Bear first form easy, got past second form, but used up all my life bottles. Got to third form, he KOed Yuri, Estelle, and Judith, and only Karol was left
Duke could NOT kill Karol. I even told Karol to stop using healing items, but he just stayed alive for about 10 minutes JUST using Nice Aid Smash. It was amazing.
Then when I fought him near his level, I went Yuri, Estelle, Karol, and Raven (mostly for Love Shot, so we could get quick heals after Big Bang lol.
