Leading a guild/clan or other group

Have you ever been the leader of a guild or a clan (or any other kind of group like a raid leader etc.) in a multiplayer game?

If so, what was your experience? Did you enjoy being the leader or did you find that it made the game less fun for you with all the added responsibility?

Having been a leader and an "officer," I've experienced both. When you have a good group of people to work with, it can be enjoyable. You can also learn a lot and teach a lot.

Back when I just started playing Clash of Clans, my wife's cousin asked me to join their clan and made me a co-leader of the clan. He was a bit busy back then so he needed someone to watch over the clan if he is busy. It was fun at first because the clan members were great. We helped each other with donations be it a clan war or just normal looting sessions. But when some of the members left and new ones came in, it really got a bit bad. Some of the new members were there just to pick on the girls in the clan or just to set some drinking sessions. It wasn't fun for me anymore so I left.

It really does make a difference which types of people you have in your group. When you have a real team, it's a lot better and simpler. People work together, help each other, and talk, joke, and have fun.

We had our moments with new members who were clearly there only to benefit themselves. They usually didn't last very long.

We had one guy one time who was after all the girls too. A friend of mine was online late one night when I wasn't on and told me some pretty shocking stuff. Needless to say, that dude got gone real quick.

I was never a leader but I was a part of this one clan that played Resistance 2 multiplayer on the PS3 for a short while. Everyone there was friendly and got along which doesn't seem to happen too often with clans.

When you can gather a group of like-minded people who have many of the same objectives and play at a similar skill level, it can be a lot of fun being a part of that group. That kind of group is much easier to lead as well.

When there is a lot of variance between skill, gear, level of teamwork, maturity, and everything else, it gets a little trickier. A good manager can handle it, but it does create some stress at times and sometimes drama. I hate drama.

So, even now that I don't want to lead any more, I look for close knit groups that know how to play as a team. It makes games that much more fun for me.

If it wasn't for clans and guilds Outlaw Star Nexus wouldn't exist today. Or, at least not as you know it. Maybe it wouldn't have taken off at all. The community was very small when it first took off (a bit generous) pre-2010, but two of my friends were here and created a lot of interesting discussion: BaronOfStuff and Dr Killjoy. I knew them thanks to the Doom (specifically Skulltag) community. I created a clan called the Blue Soldiers of Death (or [BSOD]) and they were two of the top gunslingers in it! It was my first clan but it became quite popular. I mean, I'm not talking about numbers you'd see in MMOs, but I was happy with over ten members. It was more than enough for us to still engage in clan battles when some members were absent.

It's fun and quite a rewarding experience. It's also very time-consuming, as is the case with being a leader of anything. If you love a game enough though I'd recommend trying this. But be prepared for some flame wars with other clans too.
