X-COM - Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

After putting it off for awhile, I've decided to finally do my X-Com (AKA UFO: Enemy Unknown) playthrough! I've already provided information about it in another thread. This isn't actually the original, but rather its sequel, Terror From the Deep. The two games are similar enough that the description I give in that thread applies to this one too.

    Spoilered for brevity
As you all well know, the year is 2040 and we're at war with aliens that have come to terrorize us from the depths of our own planet's oceans!

So we formed X-Com (eXtra-terrestrial COMbat unit) and decided to fight the aliens ourselves. I'm the director of X-Com, meaning I sit in a comfy chair in a fortified base and order you all to die.

I'm pleased to report that our initial battles against the aliens have gone well, as demonstrated by this combat footage of a capture of an alien sub that our interceptor submarines shot down:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS-ZZ-wZ-lk

Unfortunately, the recording program we used at the time wasn't of the greatest quality. BaronOfStuff has supplied X-Com with superior video equipment by which I mean he sent me FRAPS so I no longer have to use Camstudio, earning him a promotion to Lieutenant. Unfortunately for you, that means he's your senior officer in all combat situations.

The bad news is that on that mission we lost two fine soldiers, Somasol 2 and Nostalgic Wanderer. Somasol 3 and Nostalgic Wanderer 2, however, will come in fresh from the cloning machine conscription office recruitment center and stand ready to fight the aliens.

Casualties from the first, unrecorded, UFO raid were Diz and Somasol. Flare and kokirininja were wounded on their last mission by a misfired friendly torpedo.

Here is the current combat roster of our home base, MAP32:

Why is our base, located in the Caribbean Sea, called MAP32? You can thank BaronOfStuff for that.

Our captured alien subs have provided us with a good amount of alien weapons and equipment to research:

Right now our scientists are researching gauss rifles, which should make a good alternative to the hideously inaccurate popguns known as "harpoon rifles" and the slow-firing, cumbersome gas cannons. We have gauss pistols now, which make decent scout weapons and sidearms but lack the accuracy and power needed to be a good rifle replacement.

On a final note about our situation, please allow me to introduce the council of funding nations:

The funding nations supply X-Com with money every month. At the end of each month, they review our performance and adjust their contributions accordingly. Capturing alien artifacts, killing aliens, saving civilians, etc. will get us a funding increase. Losing soldiers or craft, as well as failing to protect civilians, will cause some of our funding to be withdrawn.

On a final note, to mix things up a bit, I will allow forum members to apply for one of two positions: Chief Scientist and Chief Engineer.

Once I've got gauss rifles researched, there are a lot of options to go from there. The Chief Scientist can dictate, to a degree, which order I follow the research paths in. Engineers are needed to build certain X-Com equipment, like Gauss Rifles, and replicate researched alien equipment. Later in the game, I will have a lot of things I need to build at once; Chief Engineer decides the order of those.

If anyone's interested in either of these positions, I'll be posting applications soon. They aren't anything serious, they'll be pretty short and mostly just a chance for forum members to be a bit funny.

Sweet thread. Had to depict me as a woman, huh? O_o I look forward to our future battles though. Well, not our. You should be on the battlefield too! Anyhow, if I must, I will be a Chief Engineer, but I'll wait for the applications.

I want to be a scientist!
You're asking for historical accuracy in a series where men weilding three swords in each hand, pirates surfing across land on giant anchors, horses with motocycle parts attached and feudal-era Power Rangers are the norm?

Well, we got two volunteers pretty quickly, so I'll go ahead and post the applications. Remember, these should be answered in-character (meaning yes, you can say you won 9001 nobel prizes) and funny applications are best:

    CHIEF ENGINEER

    1) What were the last three patents you were granted? If you have not been granted at least three patents, don't bother finishing this.

    2) 01000011 01100001 01101110 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01110010 01100101 01100001 01100100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01101001 01110011 ?

    3) Finish this sentence: The best machines...

    4) Can you do something about that damaged air filter in the sonar room? It's nothing serious but it makes the whole base smell like ass.

    5) What previous maritime work experience have you had, if any?

    CHIEF SCIENTIST

    1) What did you win your last nobel prize for? If you have not won any nobel prizes, don't bother finishing this.

    2) If one spaceship of mass 100000kg is moving north at 0.8c and another spaceship of mass 80000kg, at a distance 8s to the south of the first begins to pursue it 0.5c and continually increases its speed in the fashion of a quantum harmonic oscillator until it reaches 0.95c and then maintains a constant velocity, how much time has elapsed from the first ship's reference frame when you throw your calculator at a wall?

    3) Describe the statistical mechanics of a photon gas in a finite-potential 3D well, in 25 words or less.

    4) Do we have your guarantee that you will not use X-Com resources to create killer robots, death rays, zombies, or mutant creatures (except those specifically approved for development in order to use against the alien incursion)?

    5) What previous maritime work experience have you had, if any?

    1) What were the last three patents you were granted? If you have not been granted at least three patents, don't bother finishing this.

    How's four?

    1. Underwater grappling hook.
    2. Vial of hydrogen cyanide to be stored in suit, activated by higher-rank soldiers via remote control in case other (cannon fodder) soldiers are captured, to preserve valuable intel. Unfortunately, there was an incident involving somebody sitting on a switch, and since the project had been cancelled.
    3. A rigid caster gun with powerful shells that allow multiple discharges.
    4. Orange-flavoured fluid with added zinc, containing many minerals and various combat-enhancing supplements, for increased military effectiveness. Soldiers gained strange powers, but being able to zap to the extreme underwater had accidentally killed an entire friendly platoon, and as such, the project was recalled.

    2) 01000011 01100001 01101110 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01110010 01100101 01100001 01100100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01101001 01110011 ?

    3) Finish this sentence: The best machines...

...are painted green—to honour my existence.

    4) Can you do something about that damaged air filter in the sonar room? It's nothing serious but it makes the whole base smell like ass.

Believe me, I've done maintenance there before, recently. No bad smell at all. Perhaps think about changing your underwear, son.

    5) What previous maritime work experience have you had, if any?

During my many years working at The Pirate Bay, they had often put me on lowly potato peeling duty. I enjoyed my time there, though. You can get anything you want and I got plenty of free booty.

RE: [X-COM] Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

    1) What did you win your last nobel prize for? If you have not won any nobel prizes, don't bother finishing this.

The last nobel prize I had obtained many some odd end years ago involved cats, dogs, syrup and help from the Japanese. The final outcome was a raging war that ended in many casualties. This proved that syrup was the dominant species therefor the cats and dogs made peace and joined forces to overcome this new threat. Upon further battles it was revealed that syrup is actually an attempted and continuing attack from trees in order to fatten us people, make us stick to objects and ultimately bring us to a stop where we will be stuck and unable to move for eternity and eventually turn us into trees ourselves so that they can once more rule the world as they did many many many many many many many many many years ago. For this discover and ultimately ending this threat I was rewarded the "Nobel Peace Prize."

In order to solve this prodigious question I put myself in this situation and threw the calculator. Unfortunately the calculator hit the gravitational equalizer increasing the gravity ten-fold locking me and my crew to the floor. After the incident I was given a restraining order stating that I am no longer to be within 100ft of any form, attempt, or anything else related to math.

    3) Describe the statistical mechanics of a photon gas in a finite-potential 3D well, in 25 words or less.

Sadly I'm not aloud to speak of or work with photon gas due to a past radiation problem which involved mutated rabbits and pygmy goats....

Do we have your guarantee that you will not use X-Com resources to create killer robots, death rays, zombies, or mutant creatures (except those specifically approved for development in order to use against the alien incursion)?

    .....Um ....sure? :\

    5) What previous maritime work experience have you had, if any?

I have once swam with the domesticated cuddle fish. We later attached lasers to their heads and released them back into the wild to observe their new behavior. Sadly we lost one of our recorders Wallace but.. IT WAS IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE!!!!111!!!!!1!

    CHIEF ENGINEER

    1) What were the last three patents you were granted? If you have not been granted at least three patents, don't bother finishing this.

    1] Underwater campfire.
    2] Waterproof auto-loading .50cal hand-cannon (for hunting those dangerous and wily sea-elephants).
3] Waterproof William Shatner facemask. These have saved countless lives from Aquabear attacks.

I'm also responsible for the development of several plasma-based weapons, codenamed ProjectALSMA. Unfortunately the few working prototypes were lost by a certain individual who shall remain nameless; during a supposed "demon invasion", he plasmaed at them but the ceiling fell down and he was trapped and unable to kill. The official reports mention that then he was a zombie. As such, the further R&D of fully-functioning plasma weapons has been hindered considerably.

...do what they're supposed to do efficiently and accurately, without blowing up in the user's face.

    4) Can you do something about that damaged air filter in the sonar room? It's nothing serious but it makes the whole base smell like ass.

Got some Magic Trees, if they're any good. I could just replace the filter, but I'll use someone else's hands for that.

    5) What previous maritime work experience have you had, if any?

As part of a testing phase for Navy-developed performance-enhancing substances, I circumnavigated the globe using a pedalo in less than a day. During this time I also successfully fought off several pirate attacks with only a cocktail umbrella and portable mini-torpedo launcher loaded with chemical warheads. Come to think of it, I'm not sure they were even pirates. I think I was just testing the weapons, because the substance research was apparently cancelled by the time I got back.

RE: [X-COM] Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

    CHIEF SCIENTIST

    1) What did you win your last nobel prize for? If you have not won any nobel prizes, don't bother finishing this.

Unfortunately, due to "national security" I am not allowed to discuss the bacteria that I did not create and certainly does not exist. Of course, if this bacteria did exist would of been able to solve numerous amounts of issues that our race has been suffering from these extraterrestrials.

Please ignore the rumours that this non-existant bacteria I certainly did not create resulted in a pandemic.

    About 30 minutes.

    3) Describe the statistical mechanics of a photon gas in a finite-potential 3D well, in 25 words or less.

It amounts to solving the Schrödinger equation with the potential V(r) which depend only on r, the modulus of r.

I would have supplied an equation, but this format does not allow such things.

    4) Do we have your guarantee that you will not use X-Com resources to create killer robots, death rays, zombies, or mutant creatures (except those specifically approved for development in order to use against the alien incursion)?

I swear that all my killer robots, death rays, zombies and mutant creatures will be for the advantaged of X-Com, specifically MAP32

I also swear that I will not use any of your employees as lab rats for any non-existant developements of the non-existant bacteria I certainly did not create.

    5) What previous maritime work experience have you had, if any?

Well, since I have lived by the sea all of my life, I believe I am very well adapted.

I have worked at the sealife centre where I was incharge of making sure the aquatic creatures stayed healthy - please ignore all rumours of the non-existant bacteria I certainly did not create infecting the creatures - I have also worked with monitoring the seawater - please ignore all rumours of the non-existant bacteria I certainly did not create infecting the water supply - and I also worked at the local fish and chip shop - please ignore the rumours that this is where the non-existant pandemic started from the food being infected with the non-existant bacteria that I certainly did not create.

RE: [X-COM] Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

    SPECIAL UPDATE
I'm having trouble deciding on a Chief Engineer, and I'm hoping for more applications for Chief Scientist before I appoint one. For now, enjoy filler!

    Spoilered for brevity
Listen up, soldiers! Today I'm going to show you what makes an aquanaut! I will use Nixie-the-Pixie for this demonstration because she has an unrivaled three kills. Why she's not the senior officer, I have no idea. I really don't know who's handing out these promotions. Anyway, here's Nixie's dossier:

Let's go over these stats, in order:

TIME UNITS are a measure of how much a soldier can do in one turn. Firing a gun or priming a grenade eats up a certain percentage of your time units, so having more unfortunately does not allow you to do these more per turn. However, everything else (most importantly moving, reloading, and picking up/dropping items) uses constant time units. Each soldier starts his turn with full time units, barring an exception I'll cover later. Nixie's score of 64 TU is pretty decent.

STAMINA is depleted and regenerated slower than time units, and is only used when moving around the map. A soldier who has used up all of his stamina cannot walk anywhere until they regenerate, but can do anything else she has the time units for. Nixie's score of 44 stamina is below average.

HEALTH is...well...obvious. You die when you run out. Less obvious is that your accuracy drops when your health does, so an injured soldier likely won't score many hits. The game's default diving suits offer all the protection of wet cardboard, so this statistic won't come into play much until we've researched better armor. Nixie's score of 31 health is average.

BRAVERY is how well a soldier keeps it together when the shit hits the fan. Each soldier starts battle with a full 100 morale. Morale is lost when friendlies are wounded or killed, and restored by killing aliens. The lower a soldier's bravery, the more morale he loses when a comrade dies. When morale drops below 50, there's a risk that the soldier will panic. This risk increases as morale drops further, and is guaranteed to happen if morale hits zero. A panicked soldier loses all of his TU for the turn, is likely to drop his weapon, and will either stand still or run around randomly. Or, she might just go berserk and fire her weapon randomly. If this becomes an issue, the mission's likely FUBAR anyway, as it means we've lost multiple aquanauts without killing a single alien. Nixie's score of 20 is pretty bad.

REACTIONS basically measure a soldier's reflexes. During the video, you'll notice both human and alien soldiers firing when it's not their turn. This is reaction fire, and it occurs if A) a hostile unit wanders in range, B) the reaction-firing unit has enough TU left at the end of its turn for a snap shot with its current gun, and C) its reactions are high enough. Reaction fire is an important factor in battle, so this is a highly important stat. Nixie's score of 50 is average.

FIRING ACCURACY is self-explanatory, and is what I consider to be the most important stat. In battle, everything tends to hinge on whether you can make the Lovecraftian horrors eat a gas round before they can turn your body into paste, and in order to do that you need to actually hit them. Nixie's score of 70 is good.

THROWING ACCURACY is not as important as firing accuracy. Even if an aquanaut misses with a throw, odds are the item will land pretty close to where it was intended to go. Whether it's throwing a grenade at aliens or a gun to a comrade, "close" is good enough. Nixie's score of 51 is average.

STRENGTH is a measure of how much a soldier can carry without being overburdened. This is a necessity for users of heavy weapons such as the torpedo launcher. Overencumbered soldiers take a time unit penalty proportional to how much they're carrying over the allowed limit. If you go back to the video, you may notice I've given heavy gas cannons to multiple soldiers who didn't quite have the strength to use them. Trust me, this is still preferable to using the gauss pistols (which lack accuracy and power) or harpoon rifles (which make the gauss pistols look accurate and powerful by comparison). Nixie's score of 34 is slightly above average.

Finally, note that the ends of some of the bars for Nixie's stats are differently colored from the rest of the bar. This indicates stat boosts she got from her promotions.

On a final note, a security camera in one of the submarine pens took the following picture of BaronOfStuff (right) and kokirininja (left) as they exited the Triton:

We believe close examination of this picture may reveal important information about the friendly fire incident that hospitalized kokirininja and Flare.

You can thank Baron for that awesome picture.
