    Luigi's Mansion 3

Has anyone played Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Nintendo Switch since it came out last Halloween? If so, what are your thoughts on the game? What progress have you made? How long did it take you to beat the game?

    THREAD THEME:

I haven't played it yet but I want to! I have fond memories of the first game & had a lot of fun with friends when Dark Moon came out! For 5 or 6 years I had a huge standee in my bedroom for Luigi's Mansion 2, I picked it up from a Kmart before they threw it away. That said, I only just bought a Switch last weekend so I don't have Luigi's Mansion 3 yet! My best friend has been on the fence about getting it for a few months so I'm hoping he gets it to offset the $50-60 it'd cost me. I'm excited to play as Gooigi to gross him out. I'm probably too excited, and that makes him nervous about playing it with me because I'll troll him too hard.

I have a tendency to fall in love with the black sheep of a series, my favorite Zelda being Majora's Mask and my favorite Mario being Paper Mario (some of you expected me to say Super Mario RPG, I know. If I played it as a kid it would be #1 but I was like 19/20 and it felt janky at that point compared to Paper Mario).

As a side note, I have an interesting memory about Luigi's Mansion in 3rd/4th grade. I can't remember exactly, but my friend Matt told me that the night he bought the game there was a thunderstorm AND a tornado in town & he played it "all night". I believed him at the time and thinking back on it that was total bullshit. I lived in the same town, there was no tornado, and the GameCube was in his parents' room. He definitely didn't play it all night or even stay up past 10pm. Hahaha

The OP of this thread hasn't been seen since March 1st so I don't know if this reply will ever be seen, but I do keep my promises. I've played through about 60% of Luigi's Mansion 3 and I haven't even written about it in my gaming thread yet for good reason. It's just...not very good. I don't know if Nintendo has changed or I have simply grown old but Luigi's Mansion 3 doesn't capture even a quarter of the magic of the original for me. Something about it comes across as childish where the original and some parts of the sequel didn't. The ghosts couldn't be any less imposing, the difficulty has been cranked down to baby-mode for most encounters, and it's overall just been dumbed-down in my opinion. There isn't even a Mansion, it takes place in a hotel with 15 floors (and 2 basement levels), so the game feels much less interconnected. I think the original Luigi's Mansion tapped into a lot of what makes both Metroidvania & Survival Horror games great. A single "stage" if you will that slowly expands as you solve its intricacies. This 3rd entry foregoes the strength of such a setup in favor of a more level-based structure suited for shorter attention spans, faster bursts of play, and far less connectivity between zones.

I will give the art style props, it looks immaculate even despite the Switch's 720p output being blown up on a 55" screen. If there's one thing they nailed, it's yet another Nintendo art style that will stand the test of time while "muh graphics" games will look dated in 6 months. That being said, I think a little too much time went into the look of the game and not enough into the feel. Gone is the eeriness of the original game in favor of a brighter and more 'exciting' atmosphere. The mechanics needed a few more months in the oven as well. I've gotten Luigi stuck numerous times in places that take me minutes to recover him from (never fully locked myself in place yet so I'll give them that). On top of that, this game is a collect-athon if I've ever seen one on par with Rareware games of the late 90's - early 00's. The problem being...the physics are often quite awful and not what you're expecting, so collectibles get caught on geometry ALL THE TIME. I can't tell yu how many times gold bars and paper money fall off in some place I can't reach even with the vacuum. It's maddening. There are plenty of physics based puzzles required to make progress in certain areas, but due to the wonky controls and geometry I will fail my attempt several times and be left scratching my head as to the solution of a puzzle. A notable example is the giant watermelon on Floor 7. My first thought was to have both Luigi and Gooigi pull it away from the door with their plungers. I tried three times and my plungers bounced off. After 25 minutes trying other things I looked up a video. I was right the first time...but you need to shoot it just right for it to work. What the hell, man?

Even with the faster pace and collectibles in this title, I find myself getting bored unlike the past 2 Luigi's Mansion games and I put the game down frequently because it lacks the atmosphere and smooth controls necessary for me to lose myself in it.

6/10 - Good looking game with little to no immersion whatsoever. The controls and mechanics take me out of the experience every few minutes.
