    Mythos

Edit by Mantis: Be very aware; this thread contains spoilers. I do not recommend reading this until you have completed the series, as we will not be using spoiler tags for this particular thread. (That doesn't mean spoiler tags do not apply elsewhere, but this is a thread that will naturally be full of spoilers.) You've been warned.

As most Outlaw Star fans know, there are a number of times, if infrequent, where characters make references to some myths of the OS universe.

    For example:
    Hot Springs Planet Tenrei
Both the orange haired priest and Urt comment on Gene's red hair and caster. Even saying such cryptic things as: "Is the world ready for another disaster?"

Such things were never fully explained in the show itself.
Which leaves the task to we happy few.

    So, what do y'all think?

    RE: Mythos

I'll need to watch the episode again, but did Gene mention seeking out the Galactic Leyline to them? Perhaps a previous "race" for the Leyline caused a disaster. It's hard to say what for sure. What other myths can you recall? I'll have to take note of some of these when I next watch the series. (For the billionth time. I should know by now.)
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

    RE: Mythos

The one that really gets me is the whole red hair thing.
    "...and red hair to boot."
Perhaps the last great hero of space was a ginger.

The more obvious one would be, as you said, the race
that created the Leyline. What kind of beings were they?

    RE: Mythos

Very good question. We know they were an ancient race. I find it odd how the space forces and pirates together constructed the XGP, and such a perfect navigational construct: Melfina, but with no affiliation with the Leyline's beings at all. Or is that the case? We were made aware in the series that many of the higher-ups and the Tendo King knew of the Leyline's location. We must also question how Hilda came into possession of the co-ordinates.

I believe in order for the XGP and Melfina to exist, there must have been prior contact with the Leyline and its beings. Clearly, having the power to alter the galaxy, they are omnipotent. If the Tendo King and the Chinese associates had the Leyline's co-ordinates, why didn't they go and get the power that Hazanko got? I think the Tendo King was probably a man of honour, despite his supreme power. After all, do you remember the man that Hazanko killed who learnt of his intent to defeat the Tendo King?

However, contrary to this we know that Gwen Khan seeked the Leyline quite desperately. It is clear he hadn't been there before, yet he was one of the main engineers behind the XGP project. Perhaps he was just a hired scientist who was told what to do? Because I'm certain that the Leyline had been visited before. Why would those who had the co-ordinates hold back? Maybe they (the Chinese) wanted to keep it a secret to prevent a disaster that could potentially destroy all life. (Hazanko possibly could have done this.) Then again, the XGP is a ship that was designed to enter the Leyline. It doesn't quite make sense.

There are plenty of mysteries in Outlaw Star. Remember though—it's the Toward Stars universe. You can also learn a little by watching Angel Links, but not much that directly relates to Outlaw Star itself.

p.s. When I said "race", I meant the dash to find the Leyline prior to the events of Outlaw Star, as I don't believe that was the Leyline's first discovery, as mentioned in this post.

    RE: Mythos

    Very good points.
Never thought of the Tendo King like that.

    About Gwen Khan,
he goes on about the 'black box' from which Melfina was created.

Of course we don't know how he got a hold of it, or where it comes from.
Yet, we can use that to explain Khan's successes through his ignorance.

I don't trust Angel Links, I'm still holding out for Outlaw Star 2...hope springs eternal.

If you could refresh my memory, what did he say about this "black box"? (No need to use spoiler tags for this thread since that's been made clear.)

    RE: Mythos

He said that she was created from a "black box" of information that he himself did not fully understand.
That there is a part of Melfina that is mythic herself, i.e. being the maiden of the leyline.
I do believe the scientists uncovered the "black box" on the planet that was the Grave of the Dragon.

So Melfina is a mystery herself, even to her 'creator'.
Thus the cruel irony from Gene's promise to her in the beginning.

    RE: Mythos

Hmm, that's true. It is perhaps possible that the ancient beings once inhabited the "Grave of the Dragon". That dragon which happens to be this forum's favicon is a Chinese symbol, which I find interesting. These "beings" from the Leyline may have been humanoid, when you consider the human head and Melfina and her "other self". Since the Chinese have been around for a very long time (perhaps even explained in Outlaw Star at one point if memory serves), maybe this other race may have had an affiliation with the Chinese towards its "extinction". I don't know. It's so damn confusing. Maybe the manga will give us a straighter answer.

    RE: Mythos

It's a possibility that the Chinese had some influence.
    That's for sure.

I like to think that the race of the leyline were their own unique people.
A race the likes of which we have never seen.
As for the humanoid face, I think we can chalk that up to adaptive software.
Since we know that the leyline is really living data, then we know it does not warrant a definite form.
It can take on any persona it so chooses.

I doubt we'll ever truly know.
Japanese story telling, and film for that matter, is okay leaving one with questions.
It's a cliche of their culture that really grinds my gears sometimes.

    RE: Mythos

Very good points. But data always has a foundation, and foundations must be constructed. Could there be some kind of god beyond a god? How can data live? Is it just something we as humans cannot fathom, or would our own narrow definitions of "data" not be applicable? This is a pretty deep discussion for an anime I must admit, but it is very interesting to try to get to the bottom of this.

Now that you mention it, perhaps the novels have the answer.
