Obligatory "How did you come about Outlaw Star?"

So yeah how did you come to know and love this special anime??
For myself it's a case of being a teen looking for something new and just randomly found it on Toonami back in the day! Never looked back since If i recall it was the Hot Springs episode that was the 1st for me......what a way to start huh!!!

RE: Obligatory "How did you come about Outlaw Star?"

Thanks for the thread. I had to move it, though. Haha, yeah, that's quite a way to start. For me, back in 2005/2006 I saw the first couple of episodes of Outlaw Star being played at an anime club. Back then I was brand new to anime, but I thought it was pretty awesome. Unfortunately, I didn't pursue it after this and eventually forgot about it.

A couple of years later, I can't remember how, but somehow I came across Outlaw Star again. By this time I was getting quite into anime. Outlaw Star became my favourite anime series, and at the top my list it remains to this day.

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

RE: Obligatory "How did you come about Outlaw Star?"

I discovered it by complete and total accident.

Some nine or so years ago I was doing my usual trick of sitting around watching weeknight repeats of DBZ instead of doing schoolwork. I went to get my pizza from the kitchen, and for whatever reason stood around texting a friend about why I wasn't about to waste my Summer pissing around in town for the sake of Geography work, despite him not even mentioning it in the first place.

Anyway, realised I was missing a DBZ episode I'd already seen at least 5 times already over the week so I went back into the lounge to try and catch the end, but what did I see instead?

Certainly wasn't any Namek Saga stuff. It was the opening to Outlaw Star. I'd never even heard of it, but I decided to give it a chance. By some stroke of luck it wasn't far into the series, so by the end of the episode ('The Beautiful Assassin', if you must know), I had more than a vague idea of what was going on and it had really grabbed my interest.

And then from that night until the end of the series, I would watch it almost religiously. Then for whatever reason it went off the air without any repeats and I didn't see it again for some 7 or so years.

(Semi-related fact: it's because of Outlaw Star that I couldn't stand Cowboy Bebop for years. I was expecting to see one of the episodes leading up to the end, but for whatever reason the schedule had been shifted around, and Outlaw Star had been given an earlier slot. I was utterly miffed, and instantly developed a disdain for Cowboy Bebop and randomly taking the 10PM timeslot.)
"It turned out that the ghost was just Mr. Finley, who ran the amusement park. The spooky part is that, as soon as the ghost appeared, the teenagers' dog began to speak! And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

Thank God for Toonami is all I can say. It also showed Cowboy Bebop and Gundam Wing, both brilliant shows in many peoples opinions but I definately have to relate to BaronOfStuff here about Bebop. Something about it stopped me from really getting into it (it never made a lot of sense to me) but I enjoyed the intro song. Outlaw Star has just got the be one of the best series ever made.

I'm not sure Toonami is even still around?

I found it after looking up a character reference. If any of you know Saberie, allusions to OS appear in her movies at times. I just followed the breadcrumbs.

Toonami is no more, which one would think is sad, but not really.
It was a shell of it's former self ever since it lost the week day spot. :'(

Nothing new, found it on Toonami ten years or so ago and loved it ever since.

RE: Obligatory "How did you come about Outlaw Star?"

I was at a family party when I was a little kid and I was dying to just go home because it was midnight so to kill time, somebody turned on the T.V. to let us kids watch some cartoons. This was when Toonami still had it's midnight run, The show that was on was Outlaw Star but I didn't really understand what was going on because I was only like 6 years old at the time. After that, I saw other people watching it occasionally and I would see pictures of the anime all the time but didn't watch it until Youtube came into existence and I found a crap load of episodes on various youtube channels.
This is my signature, isn't it great?

RE: Obligatory "How did you come about Outlaw Star?"

ive loved outlaw star since i was at least 7 years old. due to my schedule, there were certain days of the week where id ALWAYS miss it, which really ticked me off! then it went off the air, and all i had for a few years were my memories. then, lucky me, i was surfing the net in sixth grade, and on an inexplicable impulse, looked up outlaw star for the first time in ages. immediately, the old fire within got relit with a blazing passion. and when i was able to get the entire series on DVD, to say i was excited would be a major understatement. any happier and i would have literally been bouncing off the walls. and the icing on the cake: the DVDs arrived a few days earlier than what i was told by the providers would be the earliest date to expect it by.
“So here’s the deal. Life doesn’t always wanna be your friend. Sometimes it’ll feel like life wants to hurt you. But you can’t just hide, ‘cause nobody likes a quitter. You’ve gotta take chances. They never said it was gonna be fun, or easy. Whether your totally ready, or when you least expect it, it doesn’t matter: life will punch you right in the face. And you can lie there for a second, cry a little if you need to, but get back on your feet, ‘cause it’s the gettin’ back up that counts. And that’s what shows that you’ve got heart, that’s what helps keep you going. Fall down seven times? Get up eight. And know, we’ll be right there with you.” - T.O.M. (Toonami)
