    Blu-Rays, Feels, and Wishful Thinking

    Howdy all!

Just got my All-The-Anime edition of the Outlaw Star blu-ray colletion!
    And I luvs it!

Tested it out on my new projector.
I've never seen Gene and the crew so big, so clear.
    It was magnanimous.

I only watched two episodes, just to make sure things were working.
The Strongest Woman in the Universe and the final ep were the two.

As I was sitting there letting the waves of nostalgic feels wash over me time and time again, I saw something I didn't expect.
Something new, or - at least - something I never noticed before.

    It was this end card:

    CUE THE MUSIC

Man... I never saw this before now.

I'll admit it, it hurts to read that.
Maybe they wrote those words at a time when there was hope for the series to have a second life, but I don't know.

The beautiful idea of the story living on in ways that we'd see is a bittersweet hope.
I mean, what we have is nice and contained, making it easy enough to enjoy again and again.
But to entertain the notion that what we watched, what we love, didn't necessarily have to end...
just makes the fact that it did all that more of a shame.

Then, as the years go by, I find plenty of people who know the show, but I can't help but long for the days when more than just a few dedicated fans watched OLS on TV and were able to talk about it with their friends at school or work the next day.
I miss feeling that OLS was something new to discover, rather than something past to remember.

I guess it's because I identify this show so closely with my childhood.
So moments like this really drive home the fact that time marches on, regardless of my wistful notions, ignoring my foolish dreams of times that I wish could have lasted... just a bit longer.

    I dunno guys.

This thing just got to me, ya know?

Guess there's nothing left to do but keep on dreamin', with one eye trained towards the stars...

    Thoughts?

Did y'all know about that end text?

I'm glad you're enjoying it! It's such a good set.

Honestly I'm surprised you haven't seen that end card before, or if anyone else hadn't for that matter. I think that message related to the ending scene as a whole. It was set up for a sequel with the main crew reunited and ready to set off. I think Sunrise had plans for a proper sequel, but sadly Outlaw Star was a commercial flop in Japan. Maybe not in the west (though overshadowed), but in its home country competition has always been tough and unfortunately Outlaw Star wasn't successful enough to warrant a full sequel. Takehiko Ito was allowed some freedom with an OVA pitch, but if I recall correctly there were complications with Sunrise and Bandai. In fact, it's possible that the anime was the fault of the manga's discontinuation, hence why Takehiko Ito decided to move his ideas to the anime which he previously had limited control over.

    (Eventually I'll colour these in.)

Remember, we don't have to keep on dreaming, in a manner of speaking. I don't, at least. There's still a lot of Outlaw Star lore waiting to be explored, and I'll keep on digging. Hopefully in the process I can help keep the dream alive, even nearly twenty years later.

You're a good man Mantis, you keep it alive for all of us in a very tangible way and I, for one, am eternally grateful.

All them HD feels tho bro, I just wasn't prepared, lol.

I'll continue to do my part and share OLS with those willing to try it out.
I'm actually watching it through with a friend who has never seen it before, or much anime for that matter.
So we'll see if we can't get another convert.

New recruits are the main lifeblood of this site as well as the current outlaws who are keeping it alive. Keep fighting the good fight. I'm grateful for that. I agree with you about the HD clarity. I remember seeing anime in HD for the first time several years ago. I could hardly believe my eyes seeing the beautiful clarity of the characters' outlines. I'm really thankful for the OLS Blu-ray. It looks so crisp, even on a very large screen. The price tag isn't that much either. The Japanese often pay considerably more (I had to wait a while to get the Japanese Blu-ray even at a semi-reasonable price) for their box sets so it's no wonder the publishers are reluctant to sell their products for much less here.

Of curiosity, how's your projector and what kind of screen do you have?

Always, through highs and lows, this is a digital home for folks like me.
    I'm just glad it's here.

    Right!?
We've been watching the SD for so long... those few HD YouTube postings were like oasis' in a visual desert.
I'd stretched out the SD versions on big screens before and yeah... it doesn't always work well.

I'm rocking the BenQ HT2050 in my apartment living room.
With about 10 ft from the lens to the wall, I'm getting about 100" of video 'screen'.
The white wall in my place is clear enough with no obstructions, so no screen required.

    Works great, I luv it.

That, combined with some tower speakers I snatched up on sale way back, makes my home theatre set up quite choice.
I'll post a pic of it later tonight to show it off.

I hear ya there, Asher. I remember when I first finished the series how saddened I was when it was all over. I remember hearing rumbles of a continuation at the time and being excited at the prospect of seeing my favorite characters come back...only for there to be nothing but silence on the subject and nothing coming into fruition.

As much as it makes me wish for a new Outlaw Star, perhaps this is a blessing in disguise.

Don't get me wrong, if they announced a new Outlaw Star, I would be hyped as all hell. But look at the reverence that almost everyone hear has for the series. Look at how deeply some of us talk about the show. We've built it pretty big in our heads. Hell, I have to as well to a certain extent. If a new show was released and didn't live up to what we have made in our heads, may it be due to the story not being up to par, the dub being recast, something being retcon, or just poor writing, then it could be a crushing disappointment on the caliber of Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skulls. Of course, this is just speculation. Maybe a new Outlaw Star might be just as awesome as the originals. Either way, the fact that we've only have this series (Unless you count Angel Links) means that we have nothing else to spoil this show and the great memories that it's given us.

And as long as we have these great memories, we can go on and celebrate it with the folks on here and introduce it to our friends and other people. As long as we do that, Outlaw Star will live on.

And count your blessing Asher. I have to wait until June before I can get my Blu-Ray copy from Funimation.

    Be-hold!

The sunglasses keep me from being too overwhelmed by the HD glory.

Fair points, Starwind. It's a difficult debate because there are only two options ultimately: yes or no. You can either say that yes, a good sequel with the risk of something awful is a risk worth taking, or that you want to hold onto what we already have and not risk it being tarnished. What's difficult for me is that I'd find it too hard to jump off the fence. If I really had to I'd probably side with you here as there's so much we haven't explored that's right in front of our faces. I'd really love a hypothetical sequel, but I'd find it hard to watch with different VAs. I'm sure some would join the cast but it doesn't look like Jim's VA would...

That's an awesome setup you have, Asher. I haven't actually measured my exact inches (inb4 jokes) but I think it's at least 85". That BenQ projector looks cool and the image is clear. Haha, you look like a boss. Here's mine. It's quite a budget projector compared to some, but it's still working just as well three and a half years later. The reason I got a screen was the fact it is motorised. So, it should have been possible for me to press a button to roll up the screen and show any posters behind. Trouble is, my uncle drilled it to the wall the wrong way round. While it does move up and down the "stopper" that would prevent it from going lower than the image can't be accessed on the wrong side. So I'm just using it as a normal screen. I'll get a picture once I've decluttered this place.
