Does anyone else find the setting of Outlaw Star REALLY aesthetically pleasing?

I mean its got this cool sci-fi look to it, but with a sense of familiarity to it, with the bright neon-lit chinese signs. Look at the background in my avatar for example, doesn't that look freaking cool?!

The first episode is one of my favorites for this very reason. There's a TON of beautiful shots with Gene and Jim are just walking/cruising around through the cool night and you can't help but be mesmerized by the beautiful and relaxing backgrounds. If I ever went to Genes world I would just walk around at night time and admire everything.

Sorry if I'm sounding silly and it's just "a normal background" to you, but I think it looks real cool! I always wished there was an Outlaw Star game where you could explore the cities in every planet.

    What are your thoughts?

Good ol' Club Temptation. There's a reason I made a forum background out of that! I love the smooth, blue/purple gradients. With all of its Chinese banners, neon lighting and dark streets, to me Sentinel often looked quite cyberpunkish. I totally agree! Imagine something in VR.

Like this, but anime aesthetics and set on Sentinel. (Mostly referring to the outside view near the end of the video.)
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Part of the reason I became interested in this anime was because of how it looked visually. I think for anime (specifically older works), this is a huge part of the appeal. I have always been a fan of the choppy lines of the characters with the bold yet "painted" effect if the background.

Yes, the whole look of Outlaw Star is aesthetically appealing to me. It STILL stands out to this day, which is saying something.

The painted backgrounds make this show absolutely gorgeous, I love it!

I do, it's way more appealing than another show we all could name.

Like I brought up a couple of times before, the painting likely extended beyond the setting. Originally Sunrise planned for Gene Starwind to have blue hair. Even though this went against Takehiko Ito's original design (his hair is red in the manga) they may have thought he'd be better received with blue hair, but they possibly changed their mind when they considered the focus on primary colours. Melfina was already a blue-coloured character. I think vibrant primary colours are a good way to kick-start a kickass space adventure. Just as the Outlaw Star is coloured red, blue and yellow, the three main characters are too.

Outlaw Star doesn't need the drab colours and characters that another show does.

Yeah, i agree! It has a really unique, gritty, night-life vibe to it. It sort of adds to the whole "Outlaw" theme, a night out in which anything can happen, and nothing is off-limits. On top of that, it just looks so satisfying!

The choppy lines add a lot of grit, in my opinion. It was the style back then for a few shows, but I think OLS pulled it off best.

Yeah, it's still definitely the most memorable show to use this style.
