How would you feel if they recast the English actors?

I got thinking today about scenarios involving Outlaw Star and how a hypothetical English dub might be handled differently if it were to be redubbed today OR if a new modern spin off were made with the original crew members. Now, just to be clear, I'm not saying I want any of this to happen (in fact, I hope a redub or recast never happens). This is just an interesting topic I thought might be worth exploring with other fans of the series.

Just for fun I looked up a few of the English cast and noticed that most of them are still active as actors. The only exceptions I could find were Emilie de Azevedo Brown (Melfina), Lenore Zann (Aisha Clan-Clan) and Peter Spellos (Gilliam) who appear to have either moved on from acting (or more specifically, anime dubbing) or focusing on other things like politics in the case of Lenore Zann.

Realistically, if there were to be an OLS project made today I think it's safe to assume Robert Buchholz (Gene) and Wendee Lee (Suzuka) would be able to jump back in the saddle without any issues (that is unless Funimation chose only to cast in Texas, like they did with the redub of Escaflowne).

So anyway, I guess what I'm asking is; would you care if they recast the English VAs? And if they did recast, what voice actor do you think would make a good replacement?

Edit: My mistake, Brianne Siddall (Jim Hawking) would most likely also not be able to reprise given the tragic circumstances.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but fyi in the case of Brianne sadly that's currently not the case: http://www.outlawstarnex.us/showthre...Support-Thread (Please spread the word/donate if you're able!)

Back on point, I think this is an excellent topic of discussion. First off, my answer would be unless a certain VA didn't want to return (side note: how awesome is it that 'Aisha' is in politics irl?), I would be disappointed if anyone were recast. Sadly, this is also why I would be hesitant to get on board with a reboot because if it ever did happen, fans of the dub would surely get their hearts broken.

In the case of Jim, sadly, his VA is simply out of commission right now. As for everyone else, even if they wanted to return, if FUNi is running things I can almost assure you that they'll recast mainstay characters just to save a nickel. I've seen it happen with Tenchi Muyo (OVA 3, Petrea Burchard, the voice of THE main character Ryoko, wanted to return but was snubbed...at least she didn't miss much there, as the third OVA royally sucked), and it happened with Trigun: Badlands Rumble (Jeff Nimoy, voice of Nicholas D. Wolfwood, wanted desperately to return but FUNi did it behind his back...how's that for professionalism?).

Unless FUNi has had a change in management/learned the error of their ways since then (not bloody likely) they'd do the same with OS. They would choose from their stable of VA's who live in Texas (they'll rarely fly anyone in, only if they're guaranteed BIG name draw/money from the franchise, e.g. Fullmetal Alchemist)--of course, no offense to the actors who are just doing their jobs--and, well, Bob's your uncle we'd all be royally pissed (especially if, in this day and age, it's easy to hear from a VA on twitter or elsewhere 'Hey, I wanted to come back as [blank], what gives guys?' and FUNi would maybe break even on the nostalgia factor of the title.

Sorry if I got a little rant-y there lol, but idk if I could choose hypothetical replacements for anyone (but don't let me stop anyone else from having a whack at it).

Oh dear, I had no idea about Brianne's situation! That's actually very depressing to hear as I've always enjoyed her voice work growing up. In my opinion she's one of those rare female VAs who can sound like a genuine young boy and give a great performance to boot. I really do hope things work out for her and I'll try and chip in when I can.

And yeah, when it comes to Funimation's casting of anime I've heard a lot of similarly negative stories. My opinion of them has only lowered with the more I've learned over the years but they seem to be the biggest anime company in North America so there isn't much anyone can do about it unfortunately.

I wouldn't mind, actually. I think it'd be interesting to hear a different take on our favorite ragtag gang. They'd need to find a damn good replacement for that narrator, though.

    Ian Sinclair as Gene, anyone?

    ...Anyone?

Just kidding, I'm sure there are much better choices out there.

...Oh wow. Voice actors really mean a lot to me so I'm crushed to hear about Brianne Siddall. That's beyond sad.

TBH, I love almost everyone in the English too much to ever be able to watch the anime again if they were replaced. Even if they took a somewhat different approach from how the Japanese VAs sound I think they really fit their roles. Even though Gene sounds just a smidgen too old his delivery is too good.

However... I'd love to see Melfina get replaced. I really would. Her voice was fine but I didn't think she really sounded like she wanted to do the role. Her deliveries were so stiff sometimes and especially how bad her "You know, you really should not aggravate the terrorist" still sticks out in my mind. Her singing voice was gorgeous, but unless she'd be willing to put more effort into the part, I think someone else could easily do a better Melfina.

Hmm, her delivery of an android was too stiff, you say? I see...sorta' like Brent Spiner's portrayal of Data in TNG?

Apologies, couldn't resist; it's your opinion, and it's a valid one (whereas I for one think both English and Japanese actors, particularly the former, did a commendable job of portraying an android who's coming to terms with her feelings and identity by playing it fairly "straight"...I'm not too surprised that we didn't exactly get "Whatchu' talkin' bout Gene?" very often).

I mean, the nostalgia is strong with this one.
So change is a scary prospect, but meh, if it meant more new official releases I would be down for some fresh blood in the voice talent.

Although, I do agree with Hex.
A new rendition of Melfina would be most agreeable.

There's a lot to work with in that character that's ripe for a re-imagining.

She's probably too big of a VA to ever do anime but it dawned on me today that Cree Summer would be a fantastic replacement for Aisha. Nika Futterman might also be a good match too as she has a similar sound although, like with Cree, she also never works on anime dubs.

If they went with someone from Canada Venus Terzo would be a great choice too. She played Blackarachnia in Beast Wars & Beast Machines.

As long as they don't touch Aisha (nobody could top Lenore Zann in that role) I wouldn't mind it, but only if it means we're getting a new season/movie/whatever.
