    Jim and Melfina

So episode 7 had a moment where Melfina lays her head at the shoulder of Gene Starwind. He is about to go Donald Trump on her only to have Jim give a good conk on his noggin, brushing him aside to curl up to Melfina and comparing her to a mom.

A cute moment, yes but I always thought that it was a bit more poigant than that.

If you think about it, Jim has a bit of a raw deal. Due to his circumstance, he had to grow up fast so he can be the brains of the operation since Gene is to brash and impulsive to run things by himself. He effectively had to give up on a normal childhood if he ever had one since he is also the son of a notorious hacker. Jim doesn't really have someone to really confide in where he can just let go and be a kid. He can't turn to Gene since he is not one to sensitive talk, he can't turn to Suzuka and he sure as hell can't turn to Aisha for this kind of thing, though they do have something of a little brother/big sister relationship brewing later on in the series.

And then along comes Melfina, with her kindness and gentle empathy, it's no wonder why Jim would look up to her as a mother figure. She is the only one on the team where he can let out his vulnerability and finally be a kid again. So when he finally does cuddle up to her, it's no longer Jim being the straight man. He, even for just a brief moment, can finally gain comfort from someone and let his guard down which I find to be touching.

Unfortenetly, the rest of the series doesn't explore that much. Earlier in the show, Melfina offers to sleep with him only for him to bashfully tell her to use the other bed. So how did he go from that to him cozying up with her several episodes later? I don't know if the light novels shed light on this but it would've been interesting to see that develop a bit more.

A lot of this including what happened to his family and how he developed as a child is either explained or suggested in the audio drama, actually.

I think that was a good observation, Starwind. I've not heard the audio drama or read the manga, so I don't know how this might factor into the creative direction that the anime took, but I thought that brief moment you mentioned was cute, but as the story progressed they wanted to emphasize the relationship between Gene and Melfina. And, as we see in "Cats and Girls and Spaceships," Jim is juuuust gettin' to be that age where he'll start being attracted to the female form for reasons other than his lack of a maternal presence during childhood...Jim retaining a closeness or interest in Melfina could evolve into possessiveness, possibly stirring up jealousy in him or Gene and creating animosity between the two (hey, that'd actually be kind of interesting for a later story). It seemed to me that this issue was sidestepped partly with the induction of Aisha into the group: she sort of took over Mel's role as protector and comforter for Jim, but I'm also glad that it wasn't simply a matter of copy/paste, as her and Jim's relationship felt much more like big sister/little brother than mother and son.

So like a genderswapped take on Ayeka and Ryoko over Tenchi? That could've been a fun direction to take that in. You do have a point that Gene and Melfina's relationship is probably one of the bigger cores of the story so it's understandable why the Jim and Melfina was sidestepped. Still, I can't help but feel that not exploring that was something of a wated oppourtunity in terms of character building moments since I think it could've been an emotionally touching thing for the series to explore. But yeah, it seemed that Jim and Aisha's brother sister relationship was going to be a thing. It was pretty much a given seeing them at the end of the space race episodes. I would say Aisha does kind of give Jim a chance to be a kid again. Perhaps more so then Melfina since Aisha practically tells him that he is practically a kid and not something to be ashamed of.

Awesome post man, but boy I was crackin' up at that Ryoko/Ayeka/Tenchi bit! Jim starts callin' her "Lady Melfina" and Gene's like "come on, Mel, Jim's such a square, you'd have way more fun with me" omg what have we done? lol

They kind of did that to an extent in Episode 9 I believe. Melfina was offering some food to Jim and Gene remarked, "Man, girls go nuts over kids because they're so small!".

If you're wondering what we've done, look at the bright side...at least we're not nutsy fanfic writers who delusionally believe that Aisha would fall in love with Jim.

I recently started watching this again as mentioned before and I thought it was just for comedy but what you guys have said has me thinking.

The video should star at 8:11 which is the part of for discussion here.

I feel like this was a way of not only "humanizing" Jim, making him more soft and relatable but also humanizing Mel as well. I remember thinking there was something interesting between the two and they would some how "have a relationship". I am going to have to finish the series to remember everything else here. I am at episode 11 right now.
