    Nagging questions

For those that have watched Outlaw Star, I'd wager there were a few questions that were lingering, and some of us had more than just a few. So here I inquire as to what those questions are that bothered you or just tickled your curiosity enough that you wished there were an answer. *Insert shipment of Gwen Khan jokes here.* Many of these could be answered with a simple "It's an anime, not real. It's not supposed to be realistic or explainable," but that cuts out much of the fun of wondering.

My list spans every conceivable question one could ask about an alien race, all centered on Ctarl-Ctarls, so I skip to the most burning questions of the lot:

-How does the moon affect the power of beast form?
-Do all beast forms look similar, or is there major variation in appearance?
    -What is Ctarl-Ctarl like?
-What exactly -is- their skin made of and what kind of punishment can it take before breaking?
-What is the extent of their regenerative ability? (Gleaned from translating El Dorado covered in clouds)
-What makes Ctarl-Ctarl metamorphosis possible and as quick as it is? How is it not, in some way, violating conservation of mass?
-What was the war between humans and Ctarl-Ctarl like?

    Non-Ctarl questions

-What is the molecular composition of dragonite?
-How is the Outlaw Star able to ignore the relativity rules of how matter compresses the closer it gets, percentage wise, to the speed of light? (Calculated from the space race episode where 50% engine power, distance, and time to cross said distance is mentioned)
-Explain the differences between old magic (Castor magic) and Tao magic
-How was a PDA able to stop a pistol bullet at point-blank range? (
-How are thermonuclear devices not outlawed and their production not strictly monitored enough to prevent a couple of bounty hunters from getting their hands on some? (Can you imagine the political uproar that would cause if loosed upon a space station or Blue Heaven?)
    -What is Hitoriga's true face?

These are tough ones. I'll answer (to an extent) what I can though.

How does the moon affect the power of beast form?
Threads like this might help, even if Aisha would hate to be compared to a werewolf.

Do all beast forms look similar, or is there major variation in appearance?
As far as I can tell (only skimmed most of it), the manga doesn't offer an answer. The novels might offer some insight, but I'm as clueless as you here. I'd like to think there are variations.

    What is Ctarl-Ctarl like?
In what way? Fundamentally, Ctarl-Ctarls seem like humans in how they react to climate, and lifestyle in general. I've always thought they had a history slightly similar to the Ancient Egyptians. For one, despite being feline themselves, they also worship(ped) cats (or whatever their equivalent animal) is...

    Nagging questions-vlcsnap-error396-png

However, culture seems to be inspired by humankind's. That, or coincidentally it was very similar anyway, since the Ctarl-Ctarls follow a similar societal structure with schools and a leader, the Ctarl-Ctarl Emperor. As above, I think their major landmarks appear quite ancient, but the modern-day Ctarl-Ctarl Empire is quite similar to our own world. Of course, that is speculative and we don't have much to go on.

What was the war between humans and Ctarl-Ctarl like?
We know it wasn't pretty, but far less ugly than that with the Sith. Anatomically we share a lot in common with the Ctarl-Ctarls, and socially too. I imagine trade treaties were negotiated for a long time before a friendlier relationship was established. Kind of like the United States and Japan.

Explain the differences between old magic (Castor magic) and Tao magic
I thought it was to do with how old magic wasn't cast by pirate guilds and probably worked differently, and how a lot of magic is compressed inside a caster shell, which is more magic than most tao spells could match, with only masters like Hazanko being able to weather the deadliest of old magic spells. Keep in mind that most caster shells are antiques and probably extremely old, thus working very differently to more modern (likely less effective) magic techniques. Only the wizards at Mount Nantai are still able to cast old magic, and those wizards are really, really old.

How was a PDA able to stop a pistol bullet at point-blank range?
How point-blank, exactly? We can't really see that. I'd go as far as saying it could have been 20-30cm away. She also holds the pistol at an angle. I don't know much about this, but couldn't a badly-aimed (she wasn't looking) shot ricochet off a hard, flat metal surface if the angle is right? We don't have guns here, so you'd have to ask an actual expert.

How are thermonuclear devices not outlawed and their production not strictly monitored enough to prevent a couple of bounty hunters from getting their hands on some? (Can you imagine the political uproar that would cause if loosed upon a space station or Blue Heaven?)
Which examples in particular are you referring to?

    What is Hitoriga's true face?
This isn't revealed in the manga, is it? I'd go as far as saying he never actually had one. Speculation again, but I think he could shapeshift to an extent that allowed him to entirely mimic the appearance of another person. But perhaps he wasn't born with a face, so he covered his entire head as he felt he didn't have a face of his own to form an identity. Indeed, who would want to walk around with an old face that only haunts if it can't be changed back? Best to cover it up. Perhaps...

he was stuck with Suzuka's face for all those years and originally stole it to frame her for killing everyone in her village, but started to feel remorse, thus covering it up.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

    What is Ctarl-Ctarl like?

I personally think the Ctarl-Ctarl are like turn of the last century Europeans or Americans (in space). I'm guessing this from episode 5's intro for Aisha she wore a western like dress as a child and from one scene with whom I assume is her family in military uniform in front a portrait of either an ancestor or the Emperor of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire. Whoever, since there is not a lot of to by because it is not brought up in the anime or manga too much.

I imagine in a time where you have weapons that can destroy an entire planets with ease that thermonuclear devices are as frightening as they are now. Plus I feel like this question is political than anything else.
We are all insane, we just act normal for the sake of others.

    @Mantis-
The possibilities listed at that site are ones I had already considered before investigating the werewolf scene for clues. All of them have major gaps in their logics: the increased light from the moon makes no sense because then they would be at full power during the day time when the sun is blasting in their face, and as stated the gravitational pull is an on/off thing with no relation to the phase of the moon. The only thing I could think of is the relation between the moon and the sun (what makes a moon phase,) but that would require acute biological sensitivity to gravity. It would imply that the gravitational forces would have to be just so in order to yield greater power in beast form which while possible, is also highly improbable.

I've thoroughly glossed over the manga and novels (except the retellings of the anime), looking up the text surrounding every mention of the word Ctarl-Ctarl and I found nothing relating to form variation, though I did find the bit about regeneration.

I concur with your conclusions, though I think they are much more observant of nature than humans are given their choice in ship architecture (Every ship has at least one nature motif in it of the two we've seen.) I also wonder if they view the bell around the neck as a religious symbol given how one is seen hanging from an ancient statue.

There was a war with the Sith? I thought the Lorgans were the other race, if any, there was a war with. I think the social aspect is a bit more...aggressive/condescending than humans, which is probably what provoked a war in the first place.

Remember that wizards didn't need to store their magic in shells initially. It was only when mana reserves started getting low that they decided "Hey, we should probably store what we have left into shells." My theory is that Mana-based magic derives its power from living things and the planet itself, and Tao magic uses manipulation of Chi (which could be construed as a form of mana magic) to create its spells.

You make a fair point, and the angle would have a considerable effect on how the bullet reacts to the impact.

Gilliam states that there were thermonuclear shells used in the destruction of the pirate ship outside the asteroid hanger, you know the one the McDougal brothers blew apart with just a few shots.

Hitoriga's face is mentioned in the intro (I think?) to one of the novels. It was about Suzuka's backstory, I remember translating it because I thought it would be fun to know more about someone we know so little about. However, they don't mention his face specifically, just that it was nothing to write home about. That said, he could've already changed his face's appearance. He later takes the face of Suzuka's mentor after killing him.

    @Lord

I feel like the slice of society we've been able to view is around the aristocratic life style (remember she came from a noble family,) so most of the pictures are from that sort of life style. Their uniforms seem modern, but their building architecture is a bit old time. Again, I think that's just the aristocratic flare we're seeing and nothing more.

Political or not, it would seem in everyone's best interest to make sure such weapons are tightly controlled to maintain political stability.
