    Tiny Details in Outlaw Star

Did you know? Outlaw Star has many, many tiny details scattered throughout its episodes. There's a ton of small secrets that the casual observer would never see, since they're either "frame-perfect" or they're just hiding in the background out of focus. Because I used to do some work on the OS wikia, I have a big stockpile of images and found myself finding a few of these small details. This is just a small collection of some of 'em, have you seen any of them before?

    **pretty large images**

    Intro

Everyone probably knows about the Meflina-in-the-background thing by now, but did you notice that Gene has a lock of hair cut off by a foot soldier? It's completely missable - only around two frames long.

    Sunrise References

These are a couple of references to Outlaw Star's animators, Sunrise Studios.

    Other References

There's gotta be a reference or an easter egg in that first image. If there is one, I'm not seeing it, but you can't just make a background like that and not have a reference to something. You just can't. In the second image, a small figure of a pirate flies out of the barrel when it hits Tobigera. This is a reference to Pop-Up Pirate, a children's toy which originated in Japan.

    Frame Perfect Expressions/Actions

Not really details as much as they are interesting stills. These only show up for one frame, but still look pretty cool.

    Small Textual Details

Resolution was too high to post this, and lowering it would remove any details. This is probably the most interesting set however, as the first image (from Demon of the Water Planet) actually has a date on it. (11:16PM, Wednesday, 10th of June, Toward Stars 158) Gene's compass from Gravity Jailbreak has "STARWIND MAGNETIC COMPASS - CO LTD. SINCE - 1997 MAY" inscribed on it, and his coffee mug from Advance Guard from Another World has "Made in Locus(t)" on the bottom.

Hopefully this was an interesting insight into some details you might've missed while watching!

I fixed the final image link for you. This is an incredible post. I'm quite jealous that I didn't spend the amount of time or effort you have in finding these! This is the kind of stuff that would be featured on a second part of the Did You Know Anime? Outlaw Star episode. I'm going to be updating the Outlaw Star Nexus Articles forum with some new stuff from time to time quite soon. If you're interested we could work on some articles together.

I really want to find more of these Easter eggs now, and there's never been a better time with the recent Blu-ray release, bringing much greater clarity to the fine details. For instance, take this picture of Aisha and her family from the intro of episode five:

    Tiny Details in Outlaw Star-vlcsnap-2015-06-12-01h08m54s154-png

Of course, this isn't the full video resolution. This was very small in the original DVD resolution, but thanks to Blu-ray we can see it in fair detail now. The most interesting thing isn't Aisha's family either. It's the only image available of the Ctarl-Ctarl Emperor, unless I'm forgetting something.

There's also this rather awkward Easter egg, arguably one of the most unfortunate in anime history:

(By the way, I added a reference to another episode in that video's music, but nobody seems to have found it yet.)

Why this was added is probably the biggest mystery in Outlaw Star. To add insult to injury, I wonder why Wendee Lee approved adding it to the English dub's audio as well.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Hah, believe me, I wouldn't have found any of these if it weren't for pausing to get images. I mean, some of these are virtually impossible to find if you were just watching casually, being shown for only one frame, but I guess it makes you appreciate the animation a bit more when they add near-useless details like that.

Unfortunately I don't think there are many specific "easter eggs" or secrets left, but I do have a few more images of some kinda interesting stuff. And sure, I'd be fine with doing articles if it's about the trivia/behind-the-scenes type stuff like this.

    **possible spoilers**

In the intro to Final Countdown, Crackerjack can be seen before he's even been introduced, working on the explosives he uses later in the episode.

Keyrings of both Ark and Hadul can be seen flying past when Gene smashes Ark's souvenir stall.

The four other criminals that accompany Crackerjack in the first image can be seen in almost every subsequent scene. The worried guy is always worried, the angry guy is always angry.

Probably my favourite one. These are the disguises that Aisha and Suzuka use in Between Life and Machine. You only see them like this for about a split second, but if you go back around five minutes earlier, you can actually see them sitting at a table at the start of the scene as Gene enters the restaurant. An amazing detail, and they're even in character while at the table.

Rachell Sweet's ID page thingy. Lots of Engrish here. Strangely, there's a date of birth on the image that uses our year system (1988) as opposed to the series' in-universe year system (Toward Stars and all that) Also "LIV(B)ERTYBELL UNIVERSAL COLLEGE" might be reference to the manga, I think.

I'd seen that SPIT SPERM thing before, but I'd never even heard that faint voice saying "SPIT SPURM." Also never knew that Wendee Lee was supportive of having it included. Maybe she voiced it and felt it was her true magnum opus.

    Amazing, simply amazing!

I've never noticed any of this stuff.
And I call myself a fan!
    I feel ashamed...

    @Mantis
You gotta love the Engrish that creeps into anime sometimes.
At this point my friends and I refer to such instances simply as "Let's fighting love", ala South Park
But yeah, that one is an extreme example of either translation fail, or dark humor.

Ah the tragedy of not having HD dvds back when I grilled each episode to death for little information like this. Alas, I knew of them, but the resolution was too poor to tell what most of them were. Anyone else notice how the gross earnings in the income report seem to be off by a factor of -1?

Hope no one minds me performing a resurrection, because this is a cool thread. As I currently go through yet another watch-through of OS (like a fine wine, it gets better with age), I've noticed a little quirk or tic of Fred's: Anyone else ever noticed the way he kinda' plays with his ear sometimes when he's talking? It seems to always be his right ear, but I could be wrong. I wonder if it's just an innocuous detail meant to add some character to Fred (I found it endearing), or...something else.

"Left ear buccaneer..." sorta' thing? Eh? Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.

Another one I just noticed (this is but one of the reasons you re-watch things, folks), in the English version of OS, for a little fun with the localization process (a charm of the olden days I look back on fondly) when Tobigera is first walking up towards the Priest's temple after Gene (when Gene first meets Ark Manaf), he's humming "If I Only Had A Brain" from The Wizard of Oz. I guess they threw that in because he's so bumbling/incompetent at assassinating Gene in this episode, plus the episode involves "wizards" so yeah I found it entertaining: it's only for a few fleeting seconds, inconsequential to the plot/translation, but humorous nonetheless for Western viewers.

That's a great find Lobo, I'm gonna have to listen out for that one next time!

Not sure if this has been pointed out before, but looking through the artbook included with the recent Blu-ray release, I found it interesting that Gene's standard pistol has a similar engraving as his Caster. Ron's Caster has a similar engraving as well, so this must be a feature common to Casters in general, in the anime at least. It makes sense for them to be decorated in such a way, being old relics crafted by wizards and all, but why the pistol? There's nothing special about it, it's just a regular old gun, as far as we know. The most plausable explanation I can think of is 'the designers thought it looked cool', but within the context of the lore I'd like to think Gene stole them both from a wizard or something.

That's a really neat thought Hari.
The matching embellishments do hint that Gene got the weapons from the same place.

Not that's fertile soil for a great OS side story:
The tale of the Tao wizard Gene either killed, tricked, or befriended in order to acquire his signature weapons.

Scouring Twitter for Japanese Outlaw Star content, I noticed this Sega Dreamcast reference cropped from a page in the manga. 'ZEGA DREAMGAST'
