Extra Chapters Information Thread

(I don't expect people to read this thread. I'm just putting my findings down, but feel free to comment if you like.)

I've been using the information on the Outlaw Star Wikia for a while to find these extra chapters. However, I have reason to believe they got it wrong. I decided to make this thread as a log to record progress in my acquisition of these Ultra Jump issues. Here's what we know so far, and what I already own.

ULTRA JUMP November 20th 1998: Outlaw Star #18 (Intermission)
ULTRA JUMP December 18th 1998: Outlaw Star #19 (Intermission II)
ULTRA JUMP March 20th 1999: Outlaw Star #20 (Sacred Ground)
ULTRA JUMP May 13th 1999: Outlaw Star #21 (Chaser)

I found Intermission included in one of Takehiko Ito's doujinshi. But getting the other three has proven no easy task, since these are issues that are almost two decades old. I think I've found the Ultra Jump issue that has the final chapter, Chaser. So, what's the problem? It will set me back over $50. I'd probably say closer to $70 or more with the costs of using a proxy and shipping. So I'd really be taking one for the team here. I could wait for a cheaper listing but I'm not sure when or if such a time will come. Now, about that misinformation, the Wikia says the chaser issue is from May the 20th. The information above came from Wikipedia (I think) and says May the 13th. But...

Clearly, you can see this issue is from the 25th of May, 1999. So I was wondering, maybe this is a special issue and Ultra Jump sometimes doesn't run once a month. So I consulted Yahoo Auctions' feature to search closed auctions...

While this user did not list the Chaser (or so I believe) issue you could see in the first picture, we can see a few things here. First of all I should say, the site that listed the Chaser issue showed it as issue #29. We can see the March issue that's supposed to have Sacred Ground inside is listed as #27 in the listings screenshot. #28 is April, and #31 is shown to be the July issue. You do the maths. Now I see there was no special issue and the issue dates reported by Wikipedia and Wikia must be incorrect. Therefore, I'm confident that by getting the 25th of May issue I would receive the Chaser chapter. But if anybody can advise otherwise, let me know.

Also, I think the Chaser issue that was listed at over $50 must be in pristine condition, which I don't care about since I'll be debinding the books to scan and touching up in an eventual scanlation. The four issues above were listed only a month ago for a few dollars each, and generally the 1998/1999 issues probably appear every couple of months, so I don't mind waiting a while to save money. I've tried using automated search e-mails before but they don't work very well, sadly, so I'll need to remember to check every day. (Perhaps I'll find a Gilliam II soundbite to play as an reminder. )

Anyway, that's the story so far. I've stalled scanlating the manga for a while now, and there's an extra project that has priority over it. You'll hear about this project in a month or so, or perhaps earlier as a teaser trailer. Or you can get early information on it by becoming a Nexus Crusader and gaining access to the Galactic Leyline. (As of now no exact rules for this—you'll be picked by becoming an enthusiastic and regular poster.)

This is what brought me to Outlaw Star UK originally! If this has it this is just one of the few (but major) steps towards getting those chapters! I never understood why they didn't make those chapters into their own collection separate from the Ultra Jump magazine.

I understand the creator went to focus on the anime and never came back to it but it's still such a shame to never finish a project like that!

If you can get those scans Mantis I would be eternally in your debt! Let me know if there is any way I can help with obtaining the other issues. I'll start to keep an eye on eBay and other sellers if I go to a con I'll look for those issues

I think Takehiko Ito wanted to continue the manga but there might have been clashes with licensing since he sold the rights to Sunrise. But I can't confirm that. Maybe if I look into the video interview at some point he may have said something about that. I covered my theories on the whole thing in the other similar thread in this subforum. So if you check that thread out, I think my theories about how they would have been published in tankobon form are correct. In short, I believe the extra chapters were going to be published in the upcoming volume four, which I think I found an image of one day. It had Aisha on the cover, but I might be remembering wrong. Whereas the "Outlaw Star 2" I found was for volume five, "My Favourite Things". I'm really kicking myself about not saving the volume four cover image, unless it's something I dreamt of. (Very likely. I do dream about Outlaw Star... )

Well, if you ever stumble upon those issues be sure to post about it! My usual search string is "ウルトラジャンプ" followed by either 1998 or 1999, and I use Yahoo Auctions, and some others such as Surugu-Ya (where I found the expensive Chaser issue), Melonbooks, etc. Most of the time I find there are no search results even on the popular Yahoo Auctions. And if you do find results they're probably from the other months we don't need. But I'll be sure to check on a daily basis, so you needn't worry about it! (Though if you find them at a con, grab 'em! )

Ah, the fifth volume is going to be a treasure to seek, or is it a myth, we may never know...! I'll keep on the lookout.

There is an additional cost to publishing tankobon, and if there weren't many chapters, it may not have felt worth it to produce a separate book from the Ultra Jump issues, but it sure would have made finding the stories easier on us. Eh, all part of the adventure, I suppose!

As explained in the other thread, I think this is from the beginning of volume five:

...though I'm not stating that as a fact, only a theory. You're absolutely right about tankobon. Like the wizards of Tenrei and caster shells, there are people who can produce custom tankobon, for a fee. (You could use a general printing service which would be cheaper, but it wouldn't be as accurate.) All I can really say is that since I'm going to resume translating every chapter of Outlaw Star soon (once I've finished another OLS project), I have plans. While we're here I wanted to talk about the translation since I haven't mentioned it in some time.

I know how it must look to some people in the community. It's overly ambitious, and I announced the manga translation a couple of years ago and haven't shown anything since the several pages of the second volume I posted ages ago. I'll have finished the first volume (Fire & Ice) before May, hopefully sooner. And I know people won't like this decision since the first volume has already been translated, but I want to translate while reading it. (Is this such an odd thing?)

Also, I want to learn how to better scan the black/white pages and eliminate all of the moire. Anyway, I'll probably make another thread to talk about the translation sometime. Sorry to go off-topic, guys. (And this is why I need to put Hari's Gwen Khan smiley on the board at last.)

I thought we found some of the missing chapters in Ito's doujins, but I could be wrong. He could have made those just to sell doujins. the ones I'm thinking of are Nakayoshi and About Azell Anecdofe Amazing A4.

Hey Idolo. It's great to see you around again. Do you know which chapters? I have Nakayoshi which has Intermission. (As you see, I gave it a strikethrough.) To be perfectly honest with you, I have at least five copies of Nakayoshi (maybe more) with one being a limited edition "Book Shop Version" or something with a slightly different cover. (I haven't checked for other differences. Imagine if there was a Takehiko Ito signature hidden inside. Keep dreaming, Mantis.) I got them on the cheap so I figured I'd buy more and give some away in competitions or something, since I have to pay a lot for shipping and commission and may as well stock up a little. I know, I am mad.

You have my thanks! This information is priceless. And you know what? I think I might already have that Azell one, looking at the cover. Every once in a while I've bought a bunch of OLS hentai (maybe with a couple of Ito doujins mixed in) but didn't end up reading them as it isn't my kinda thing, and had no awareness of this. Kinda stupid of me in hindsight. I'll see if I have that one tomorrow (gotta sleep) and go on a big hentai quest. Please don't judge. It's... for great justice.

Unfortunately... no dice. I already debound the Azell doujinshi not that long ago. I just forgot its name and given the amount of these books I have, seemingly which one I did debind! There's a reason I did this though. It's the one that I got the extra Sword of Wind art from and some other goodies. Alas, no extra chapter! This hasn't been a waste of time however. I've reminded myself of the amount of great content that are in all these books (well, I'd let you guys be the judge of the hentai and I'm on the fence about uploading these) and the fun I could also have colouring in some of it. (Particularly, Takehiko Ito's sketches and old concept art.) Still, looks like I'm back to the Ultra Jump hunt for now.

Oh yeah, there was this odd extra story I found in the Azell doujinshi. Once I understand some of the Japanese I might be able to figure it out, but I disregarded it as canon. Despite the manga being risqué I doubt Gene would have sex with Suzuka and Aisha (not at the same time, hah) in the space of two pages.

Bet I know what you were hoping would appear.
