    Outlaw Star Bootlegs

I've actually become a bit of a collector of these. I wonder if any of you have purchased one since Toonami's first broadcast, whether it was by accident thinking it's official or just buying it due to its low cost. Feel free to share if you have!

The most amusing bootleg was probably this one (see the back cover which has a completely different synopsis):

At least it looks different, but Christ Almighty, at least put some effort into describing the show.

There's a small chance I'll come across recordings of the censored Toonami episodes which is part of the reason why I'm buying these bootlegs. There's also some fun in seeing how far these pirates have gone to make their fakes seem genuine. Quite surprisingly, in a couple of instances the pirate copies look better than some of the genuine box sets. I'll cover all of my DVDs (and others) in the future.

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

At first I looked at the box art and thought nothing of it. Pretty lazy IMO. Then I read the description and thought "...what?" I always find it amusing that pirates think this will fool anyone. Then again, there a lot of suckers out there I suppose.

I own a bootleg copy of Outlaw Star too. I refer this one as the FX bootleg because of the fx logo on the front of the case. I think this came from Malaysia. It's not bad in presentation I'll give them that and the case is made of thin cardboard. Sorry for the pic size haven't figured out the hide/show feature.

That's pretty damn good for a bootleg. Actually, one of the ones I recently ordered looks like that but doesn't have the "fx" logo. I also only have a photo of the front cover. I wonder how different it will be...

Blame the eBay seller for the potato quality.

As for your photos you just need to wrap them in a spoiler tag which I've just done for you.

Here's another interesting one I ordered from Germany. I like the back cover.

I received the first bootleg mentioned in the last post today. I'm very impressed by it. The only bootleg-like part of it is the spine text, and also the front cover image being flipped horizontally. (A fan of the show should be able to spot this due to Gene's scar being on the wrong side.) Otherwise I'd be completely fooled by this. I think they just copied the official DVD files to the bootleg as the menus look genuine. For that reason it looks like ass since the first DVD releases weren't very good quality. It was in 2006 that Outlaw Star was remastered in Japan, and even western DVDs released after then didn't get the remaster treatment. (Thank god for the Blu-ray.)

Best bootleg yet? Possibly. They even made the Outlaw Star logo on the discs shiny.

I have some bootleg DVD's but because I never got Outlaw Star on DVD, I wouldn't have one of that.

Somewhat on topic, has Outlaw Star ever came out on blu ray? I am considering getting a hand full of my favorite animes on blu ray and I would like to get it if it exists.

Yes it has, and yes it's very glorious!

It was released by Funimation in the US.

I found another bootleg on eBay a week or two ago which I've never seen before. It's also the second VCD (video CD, a format from the '90s most popular in Asia which I think is the first digital video format) I've come across. The first one I already own which was titled "The Story of Gene Starwind". This one's more interesting. Naturally, being the Outlaw Star nut I am I bid and won the auction yesterday. It'll probably take a while to arrive, so in the meantime here are the photos from the auction.

    Bootlegs-bootleg3-jpg

Although the photos are low-quality, I think this bootleg's the most unique one I've seen. I love the use of the "pilot" logo that was used early on in Outlaw Star's development, the CD etching and the custom Outlaw Star "logo" on the front cover. Yes, it looks quite worn in its cardboard box but I don't mind too much.

Also, has Ron been drinking gallons of Sunny Delight again?
