Going Forward: Mobile Access and More

I think that the mobile app has been a major asset over the years. For many members it's been a preferred means of using the forum. Unfortunately, due to a change in Google and Apple's policies the app provider Tapatalk has had to remove all of their bespoke forum apps from the stores.

If you still have the iPhone/iPad app installed and you want a good way of browsing the site on mobile, don't uninstall it as you will not be able to get it back. It may continue to work for quite a while. The same goes for the Android version. However, if you did happen to uninstall it or you haven't tried the app yet, you can install this APK.

Installing an APK is usually very simple. You can find the instructions easily enough. That being said, it's inconvenient for members to take that extra step and with iPhone/iPad owners having no way to browse the site well on mobile anymore I do need to look at other options. Something you may know about this forum is that it runs on vBulletin 4. It's very popular forum software. The issue is that the support for mobile devices is pretty awful compared with competing software like XenForo.

I really did not want to migrate the forum (and ended up moving to a whole new host a few months back for the sake of that) but it seems my hand is being forced. A lot of unpopular forum features have lately been removed so a migration to XenForo doesn't seem quite so daunting. I'd want a designer to replicate this theme to the best of their ability. My biggest concern about migrating to XenForo was that it wouldn't retain the charm of older forum software. As I said before, from my experience 9/10 XenForo forums look highly similar; overly white and "clean".

I know, I'm stuck in the past, but if I find the right guy for the job I'll probably jump ship. The site would work fine on mobile with the move to XenForo. An app could be created in the form of a wrapper that loads the mobile site. It would also be more secure, supporting the latest PHP versions. I'll need to save some money for this so I predict the migration will be in Q3 or Q4. In the meantime, keep the app installed if you want to continue browsing on mobile.

Good thing I still have the app (& I'm on Android so I could/would re-install if I ever goofed and uninstalled it). I think you mentioned this to me in private before but it's good to hear it explained in full. Hopefully this PSA reaches plenty of our members' screens because the app is likely unrecoverable for ~50% of them. (I'm hoping that this post causes a few more folks to read this when they see activity on the thread.)

I talked to Tapatalk about this. There was a billing issue and they agreed to extend the app's functionality up until sometime in August without further charges. (I've been paying a monthly fee for the app.) So it'll probably be August or September when we'll move to XenForo. Yeah, I also hope a lot of people see this as it's pretty important info. A lot of people post here using the app, sometimes almost exclusively.

Those guys can rest assured that the new forum will have an app that will probably surpass the current one. We have had a pretty good app for years, but there are some things I've always disliked about it. You have to input forum code completely manually and it doesn't support the forum smilies either without typing them. (Even then they don't display on mobile.)

Not only will the new forum get a default theme that will (to the highest extent possible) replicate this, I'll be getting more commissioned.

    Planned themes:

    Outlaw Star Nexus Classic

    Outlaw Star Nexus 2022

    Outlaw Star UK

Club Temptation (Only a possibility, it's the second theme from Outlaw Star UK which is a bit like a dark mode, though the current theme is on the darker side anyway)

    Outlaw Star Nexus Mobile

    Outlaw Star Nexus Mobile Dark

Some good news. At least for the time being the app is back on the Play Store, so if you use that there won't be a need to download any APKs. The link is still in this thread in case the app disappears again.

As much as I like the current setup, i'm looking forward to the new app. Sounds like it'll be much better future-proofed.

I don't use any mobile apps for forum browsing specifically, I really wish I had some recommendations in that regard. Dealing with various moves and such back from my old forum hosting days was always a pain, so I wish you guys luck here!
