    Manga Update and More

There have been some exciting new developments recently. First of all, our translator Styg has already translated the beginning of volume three. However, I've got to wrap up the (very tedious) glossary section of volume two and also work on a similar volume one update (pages that were originally skipped) before moving onto volume three. But if you're up to date with the manga I'm sure you'll enjoy the end of volume two. There's also been a big update to another Outlaw Star project which I hope to unveil either this week or the next.

I said that I would explain a recent incident. Yesterday, member JustinYatesMusic—better known as Justin—was banned from the site. In his short time here Justin had been a good member of Nexus and certainly a big fan of the show which is why it wasn't a light decision, nor was it decided on a whim. Although I am the sole administrator, these issues mostly concerned the translation team. While I wasn't the only one who shared concerns, ultimately I was the one who decided to ban Justin. This is an action I haven't taken since 2012, so it was not an easy choice.

You may be wondering what happened, but like any other person here Justin has a right to privacy so I won't share any private conversations. What I can say is that Justin's actions threatened our efforts on the manga project, and potentially other projects. Since I started working with Zemekis, Styg and Pachio last year, the manga has seen a lot of progress. Even if tough decisions need to be made I can't allow anything to jeopardise something the Outlaw Star fanbase has wanted for almost two decades.

Though I won't comment on the ban further, if you have any questions about the manga you may ask them here.

Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Perhaps I should have expected a vague explanation.

    Woah, sounds touph.
I hope he wont try to threaten you guys any further. It would be very sad to see all your projects ending this way.

Besides that Im looking forward to your next translations.
Glad to know to see something new soon.

Keep your eyes peeled. If I can find some time this week or weekend, I should be able to release the first chapter of the Light Novel next week.

Now that is something I'm looking forward to. I've never read the light novel despite hearing quite a bit about it so it'll be awesome to finally get to read it. I'm curious on how tonally it differs from the anime since, from what I've read of the synopses, it seems to have a darker story. Can't wait to read it!

Can it even differ that much from the anime? They share the same canon as far as I know.

I wasn't aware that the "Up" and "Down" adaptation light novels are darker than the anime. However, we're working on El Dorado Covered with Clouds, which is very different to those as it is like a new episode of the anime. From what I've read so far this light novel has the same tone as the anime. I believe its author is a different person to the one who worked on the two novels that are anime adaptations.

If we ever translate "Up" and "Down" I don't think it would be any time soon as there wouldn't be as much fan demand for something that is the same story we're all familiar with, rather than entirely new content.

So it is hard to tell for the cases of "Up" and "Down" if those are canon.
Do these two novels retell the story differently or do they fill some gaps with darker stuff?
The storys from the anime must have been retelled somehow in order to make them darker.
Otherwise there can be only filled gaps.

We can't really say at this point, unless a Japanese person who has read them can tell us. Of course, we have Japanese readers in our team but they have other projects to handle. It would be interesting if we learned new things about the anime from them, but since Takehiko Ito and the writers at Sunrise weren't involved it is debatable whether they could be considered canon. Another member of our translation team called Pachio who sometimes works on non-manga projects is Japanese but he doesn't visit the forum. I don't have any say in this matter since I don't know Pachio (he is Zemekis' friend) but maybe he would consider reading those two light novels in the future and telling us the major differences. But like I said that isn't up to me.

Yeah, sorry guys I should have been more specific with what I said. The Light Novel we are working on is "El Dorado Covered with Clouds", which is entirely new content, not an anime or manga novelization. As Mantis puts it, the story length and complexity should be roughly equivalent to an additional anime episode when all is said and done.

I can't really comment on Pachio reading the novelizations of the anime. He's a busy guy and for the foreseeable future I need him to focus on translating content that we know is new. He would also need to re-watch the anime since it's been a few years for him to make a comparison in the first place (we are working on that now, watching a few episodes each Saturday when we hang out).

I agree 100% that it would be interesting to know how closely Up and Down resemble the anime, but to be blunt that's a very low-priority goal at the moment.
