    Slacktivism vs Real Activivism

This week, Jane Fonda and Ted Dansen, two of the wealthiest celebrities in Hollywood went to D.C. and got arrest to "protest climate change". I have no fucking clue how uber rich egomaniacs helps protest climate changes but...who cares.

Meanwhile. Mr Beast has collaborated with over 600 other youtubers to help donate $20 Million. For each dollar donated, Team Trees will plant a tree. That's 20 million trees.
That's ACTUALLY going to help the environment. That's actually doing something as opposed to celebrities doing nothing, but calling it "protesting climate change".
Youtubers big and small of all types (Pewdiepie, Jacksetpticeye, Critikal, GonetotheSnowdogs, Count Dankula) are coming together and doing something.
Meanwhile, celebrities that could spare to donate $1Million each without a care in the world do absolutely nothing.

I'm not a huge believer in the scare tactic threats of climate change, but it is a real danger, and if we can combat in any way, that's fantastic. Mr Beast found a way to actually do that, and its absolutely amazing.

I wanted to make this thread because in the span of a few days, we got the perfect juxtaposition of slacktivism vs actual activism.
If anyone wants to donate, go to Teamtrees.org
Hell, I might donate just to spit in the face of elite Hollywood snobs.

Hollywood sucks. Some of the scummiest people in the world are part of those circles. Between the pedophilia rings, prostitution, and drug use, I am shocked any of them have time to care about the environment. I will be fair in saying not all Hollywood types are this way but if I had to guess a percentage, I would say it is over 70.

What Mr. Beast is doing is true activism. Being an activist takes action. It isn't just holding up signs and crying every chance you get. It is getting out there and being the change you want to see in the world. I support him and everyone else who planted trees 100%.

Even if climate change isn't as big of an issue as is being claimed, more trees = more homes for wildlife, cleaner air, and balance for the planet.

That's just the thing, I don't think they really do. They probably flew via private jet to DC from LA (polluted, shit-covered hellhole) to protest climate change. How do you even protest a meteorology?

Agreed. Even if you remove all the politics and human elements from this story, it's just cool to have more trees in general. They're one of my favorite plants (after succulents/cacti) and 20 Million is seriously enough to change something IF IT HAPPENS. I hope this doesn't turn into the next Kony 2012, I'm really wary of faux grassroots movements by someone with no prior credibility. There are supposedly 500 youtubers or something on-board with this so I feel like there are enough eyes on it to keep everything legit, but most of them are also folks sitting at home raising money. Who's actually keeping tabs on this?

The youtube's s are just the speakers there to raise awareness and don't plant the trees. They make the videos, direct people to the page, and donate themselves.
The Teamtrees website is there to keep tabs of the money donated.
http:// https://www.arborday.org/generalinfo/about.cfmArbor Day Foundation is the group actually planting the trees. They're starting in January, and hope to be done in 2 years at most. Most of the trees will be planted in American National Forests, with some in other countries.
So it seems pretty credible to me at least.
Here's hoping it actually happens. And that no one walks around San Diego necked

I dislike MrBeast. However, that isn't going to sway my opinion on this and I do think it's a good thing. I won't contribute to it because I donate to different charities that also need support.

Climate change or global warming is a whole other thing. It's a debate that always stretches out for ungodly lengths of time so I don't tend to get involved. (Besides, I've been hearing most arguments repeatedly for over two decades.)

This sentence sums up my feelings as well. I'd feel a bit differently if this was some random nobody, but in a way Mr. Beast is a celebrity as well and I can't be 100% sure that this initiative is real. I guess I'm a bit more pessimistic on it than Mantis, but I think we're really close on this one.

What worries me is that I've heard start-dates for this project from people thinking that the trees are being planted RIGHT NOW, to 2020 (after the campaign ends), and yet others saying that the earliest time for a tree to be planted as a result of fundraising would be 2022 due to the logistics of acquiring/transporting 20 million saplings. I fear that we may still be hearing about this in 2030, just like return trips to the Moon, manned Mars missions, polar ice caps melting, etc.

That is the thing... I know climate change is real. The climate changes all the time as a natural process of the earth to keep things balanced. It is just a matter of whether or not we should be worried about it and I really don't feel we should be as worried as people in politics let on. I don't have to be older to understand the patterns. There have been several times people have said the earth was going to end in 10 or 20 years if we don't change things and it never happens, it hardly gets worse, and in some cases, things are improving.

I am all for protecting wildlife and keeping people away from protected lands because people tend to suck when in large numbers. I just can't get behind something that is a scare tactic.

I didn't donate but I do what I can via my own means. I don't entirely trust donations. I know a lot of them out there scam thousands if not millions out of people's pockets without them realizing it. I am more about solving a problem hands-on rather than throwing money at it. I still think it is a great thing to plant trees and stick by that but I am sure some people are scamming others out there some way some how.

Guys, I have formally decided to assist the environment as well. I am no longer picking up my dog's shit because dog manure is a valuable form of fertilizer and we never know when grass will be in short supply the way things are going.

I mean... If it is not in the way. LOL

If my dogs poop way in the back of the yard, I leave it. The only issue with their poop is that it has high levels of protein. This is why it isn't a common practice that we use it for our gardening needs and instead use a cow's. Herbivore turds are better, at least in most cases.

What kind of discussion is this...
