    Speed Racer

How about some really old stuff? The original 'Speed Racer' was my first glimpse of wide eyed, terrible dubbing, anime. I haven't seen the later version. I remember the old one well though (yeah, I'm old, so what?)

It was my brother's favorite show. My mother hated it and thought it set a terrible example for kids. I can only imagine what she might think of some of today's shows and characters, ha ha.

Have any of you seen it? Does anyone else remember it?

I remember watching Speed Racer when it was on MTV with Beavis & Butt-Head back in the 90's. It's dub is on par in awfulness with Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

I do remember the original popping up here and there, but the other one?

Didn't they do a reboot that Nickelodeon aired on their own Toonami clone in the early 2000's?

Is that the one you're talking about?

I just know that there was a later version. I'm not sure who created it or exactly when, but that sounds about right.

The original came out in the 60s I believe. It continued to be on for several years after that, which is when I would have seen it.

Hmm, I just had a look and it appears that there was another one even later. I wasn't aware of it before now. Maybe a movie too?

It's okay, I think I'm one of the old ones too LOL! I do remember this anime but I really never watched it a lot. I just remember seeing it on TV when I was a kid. I think I was watching a lot of those UltraMan and some Sentai back then. Well in terms of terrible examples for kids, I think this anime isn't that bad compared to a lot of animes today LOL!

I actually like Speed Racer. It was a weird cartoon, with all the stiffness and funny dubbings. But it was one of my childhood favorites. I used to watch Penelope Pitstop, too. If I remember it right, these cartoons were both on Cartoon Network.

Ha ha, I remember Penelope Pitstop too, barely. Wow, that was a long time ago. I'm talking about before Cartoon Network was even a thing.

When I was a kid, we didn't have cable or anything like that, just public television (no computers either, so no streaming). Cartoons were on after school or on Saturday mornings only.

    Remember that, @WorkingBuck?

I'm not old enough to have watched it in the 60s, but I've seen numerous episodes at some point or another...can't remember exactly where or when, but I know my most recent viewing was accompanied by some research I did in university, so I do have good memories with this franchise, albeit from a much different perspective. It's a fascinating insight into anime history, the history of broadcasting, of cultural imports and localization in the U.S., and on and on.

& I don't care what anyone says, THIS iconic intro is STILL awesome, and catchy as hell. I think it helped the series during its U.S. debut, and helped sear it into the hearts & minds of countless youngsters who grew up with it and still get a nice nostalgia kick out of it.

Btw has anyone seen the 2008 film? I didn't get around to it, will someday but was wondering what people thought of it.

Yes! Thanks for the clip, ha ha. I smiled ear to ear through the whole thing. That intro is great. When we were really little, I remember my brother barreling into the room when he would hear it starting, and then singing the whole song. Loudly. Good nostalgia trip for sure.

I'm not old enough to have watched it in the 60s either. It was on in the 70s too (or at least re-runs were).
