    3D-Printed Leyline Dragon & Star

I posted this on Facebook today and it's received a nice response. As I'm a lazy bastard, I'll quote what I wrote...

So, I got a 3D printer about a week ago and I've been working on various things. This is the iconic Leyline dragon, merged with Gene Starwind's also-iconic star tattoo. It's made of brass, has lots of depth and fits on your palm just fine.

Whaddya think? I've still got to sand it a little more to remove some imperfections, but otherwise I'd call it complete.
    And here it is...

It seems a few people want to buy one. I'll have to think about that, but most likely I will start selling them and maybe thinking of new 3D OLS ideas. Ten posts on the forum gets you a 25% discount code. (I'm shameless, aren't I?)

Edit: I since increased this to fifteen posts, but I also explain this in the full-price listings.

Thanks. I'm hoping they will sell a least a little and I can put some more OLS accessories up.

This is terrific. There are certain pieces of technology in this world that I couldn't even begin to wrap my head around. Earlier I was thinking how amazing it is that we can capture single moments from the world around us in digital form through photo or video, but even more amazing are 3D printers. But enough of my old man rambling, here's my vote for what you should make next: he's simple, but iconic, and he looks damn good in pink. It's Gilliam!

I bought your dodgy one I actually loved the look.

I want a Gilliam too. I do also want a XGP but... I guess we'll have to discuss that at a later date.

That Gilliam bot idea is probably the best I've seen so far. I was also thinking of Aisha's headband, faithful to the original but elastic. Then there's the Kei Pirate mask, but I want to learn to paint well before that. I'd only need to paint some black for Gilliam since I'd use pink (or blue) plastic for most of it and white plastic for the eyes.

I thought the "scales" were unintentionally cool, but it was still a reject. I'm sure you'll like it.

As for the XGP, I've already printed one found on Thingiverse, but printing it as one object is hell! It was a nightmare to remove the supports, and even then it wasn't pretty. The only proper way to do it is to print all the ship parts separately. I haven't learned enough to confidently glue it all together and I doubt many would want it in its unassembled parts. Finally, I'd feel bad selling something someone else has made anyway.

But I would consider making the El Dorado/Shangri La in the future, just not in grappler mode. (Though I could see about a hatch switch that opens the bottom, showing the halcyon missile.) Same with the Ctarl-Ctarl's Orta Hone Hone. They're pretty solid and sturdy shapes. I'd consider making guns like Gene Starwind's extra arsenal, but it seems no cosplayer wants anything beyond the caster gun. Blind Squirrel makes the best of those. His props are mechanical masterpieces. Hell, I could probably make Ron MacDougall's caster gun. I'd just need to do a lot of research for the shell sliding mechanism.

My biggest challenge is painting. Everywhere I turn I'm being told to spray paint. I have no garden or garage and my apartment complex bans anything like painting outside. My only hope is my family's house, but I can see them being super-awkward about it. So yeah, if you've witnessed any methods of professional indoor model painting that doesn't involve covering my place in paint mess, inhaling toxic fumes and killing the cat, do tell!

Mantis, it's gonna be a sad day if you have to say that OS killed your cat, lol.

    I love it!

Oh, but where do I begin....
I have an Outlaw Star crew of 1/4th sized ball jointed dolls. (compared to an average human's height, making them about 16-17 inches tall)
Their hands are about the size of a quarter.
I started collecting in 2012 when Melfina came home, and have tried commissioning Gene & Ron's casters (with shells) since!
I finally got someone to start on Gene's caster in 2015, but still waiting for results.
(Current Outlaw Stat character crew: Melfina, Gene, Jim, Aisha (away from home at the moment) Suzuka, Ron, Harry, MelB (my own version) Fred, Hilda (away from home at the moment, as well as Corpse, another version of Hilda) and Kent Cresentwave (OC based off the original sketches/version of Gene) I have a few aliens too.

I'd love to see anything from weaponry (I made Suzuka's bokken with skulpty clay) guns, knives, swords, to technology Gilliam's (pink and blue!).
Maybe a bust figure of the planet Tenrei pink bird-alien? ^_~ I think they are cute!
The cactus? (or ice cream shop sign pin/button haha)
One of the "Gun Cats" Ron used?
The "watch"/compass Gene had in prison!

The two biggest things I've thought of would be:
    1. A base to hold my 1/4 BJD Melfina to make her The Maiden of the Leyline complete with the large head above her.
    2. The inside of the Outlaw Star. (guessing complete it would be about the size of a bathtub?) consisting of Jim, Gene, Aisha and Suzuka's seats, Melfina's tube, and Gilliam. It would be a lot of pieces.

    More practical/human ideas:
    Cosplay props or weaponry.
Key-chains/Phone straps mini/chibi figures, (Swanzo!) foods, DRAGONITE!
Pins/Buttons/desk stands/Logo's: "Outlaw Star", "Blue Heaven", "El Dorado", "What is thy desire?"

I'm looking forward to the many adventures ahead!

These are some excellent suggestions. I believe you mentioned acrylic paints previously? When I can I'll buy a set of these and have a go. I've printed some white plastic so I should be ready to go.

Your BJD work is most impressive. You've spent so much time and money building these and their assets. 2015 for the caster gun? Sounds like it might not be coming. Ah, so Kent will be the blue-haired Gene?

In a miniature size, most of those sound doable. Although I haven't used it yet (apparently it's difficult to get the settings right for it) I got some bamboo filament. Indeed, you can print wood, so I should be able to make a perfect bokken with that. Perhaps I can learn to make miniatures of the other weapons/Gilliam. I'd like to make actual-size weapons like the blaster. It's not out of the question since I'm looking into printing a BB gun.

Haha, the pink Silgrian is a bit creepy. I suppose she became even creepier when I unfortunately stumbled upon certain artwork. Perhaps I could learn to model something more organic, although I think I could try something easier first, like a figure of Swanzo since it's a pretty easy job aside from the painting. I love the cactus suggestion. I first read your post this morning and I've thought about it a few times since. I considered how difficult it is to print tiny and very thin parts. So instead of giving the cactus a "spiky" exterior, I could give it some thin holes instead. Hell, it could even be a toothpick holder, haha. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to put needles in, even if realistic.

Those Space Forces' cats would be a nice modelling challenge. Was there anything special about the compass in its design? (Obviously not the fact it can reverse the laws of physics!) I'll have to watch that episode again.

For your top idea, do you mean the spiralling, jagged object that holds Melfina up? I'm sure it's possible if working with the correct dimensions, but given the size of your dolls it might have to be done in parts. Yes, the second one certainly would have to be done in parts, and many! Not impossible but quite the challenge. My printer can print within a 140x140x140mm cube. So I'd have to make a series of floor tiles that clip together, the walls/screen and of course everything else like the seating and Mel's chamber I couldn't see it being a cheap job, but a nice idea nonetheless.

Quite recently I received some cool Bakuman mini/chibi keyrings. I've never been a huge fan of chibi, but these were well designed and I guess chibi is the only way to go for something very small. I looked into transparent materials for my printer with dragonite in mind, but you can probably find purple artificial gems already, so I doubt there's much demand?

Thanks for these! I couldn't really think of anything and there isn't any demand for the dragon emblem, so this helps for thinking about the future.
