    Outlaw Star shield

A year ago, when I was still in basic swordsmanship with Aegis, I customized my shield as so many others in my class were doing. The following is the reference print-off I used with the grid method of drawing to outline all the different paint boundaries on the shield. The top and bottom tigers were from artists on dA.

Overall, just for outlining the design onto the shield, it took several weeks of dedicated work. Painting took almost as long. It represents about two months of honest hard work. I finished it with a couple coats of polyurethane on both sides.

The Japanese characters in both bottom corners mean the same thing as the English word diagonal to them.

And here we have it contrasted against the shields others made at commencement. Unfortunately mine was furthest from the camera.

Holy crap. You have a light shield!! (Haha, okay, bad joke.) That's pretty cool. It sounds like an interesting class, too.

    RE: Outlaw Star shield

They were impressed with the amount of detail I put into it, but that was pretty much it. The head instructor inquired as to what Outlaw Star was, though I think that was his subtle way of finding out the intent with which I painted a ying-yang on my shield.

Reason: power symbols (ying-yang, crosses, religious symbols, etc) are not allowed to be put on training equipment if the intent is to treat/use them as such.
