    Out of Curiosity

This is a random question, but I noticed that near the end of last year the board set a record for users online, at over 600! I was curious if there's any particular reason for this? An announcement about OLSN or something?

We got 54 people on at the forum I adminster the other week but 53 of them were spambots. The other was me

You gotta do something about traffic, it's a good site, I think you need to tap social media like Facebook asap.

Please stop accusing people who aren't bots of being bots and also abusing the report function. I've issued a warning, so don't do it again.

Back to the topic, this is because of search spiders. They are created by search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing and work by "crawling" across website pages so they can index the content. If links change and somebody clicks a result on Google it might be a broken link. Spiders repair these, and also the process creates cached versions of sites if you've ever used that feature.

I think the time the site got around 600 spiders was when I moved a huge chunk of the forum to Grave of the Dragon, a new (at the time anyway) sub-forum created to archive old content. So this meant that everything had to be redirected. To make the process more efficient, search engines use loads of spiders at the same time, so this whole place was crawling with them. Sorry if you're arachnophobic.

    Also...

OSN had a Facebook page around a year and a half ago which existed for several years, but I nuked it because I concluded that anybody with a keener interest in Outlaw Star would join the forum anyway, and maintaining the Facebook page was also sapping my time spent on the forum. Sure, OSN had a bigger audience on Facebook, but getting "likes" wasn't what I had in mind when creating a community of like-minded fans.

    Ahh spiders! *runs away*

Yeah, that makes sense - thanks for explaining!

And I’m sorry for making this topic, didn’t mean to cause any issues about the bots

You've got nothing to apologise for. I actually appreciate it when people make threads about the forum since they're usually helpful (especially bug reports... more insects I know, and I'm the biggest bug on this ship) and it's probably about time I provided an explanation for that bizarre number of users. There's a way to block spiders, but I don't know if it's worth bothering. They're probably helping by adding visibility to search engines.

Speaking of bugs, I've been experiencing this ever since the beginning. When I type in the comment box, the texts get duplicated making it hard to follow what I'm typing because I can't read it. Does this happen to everyone or is it only me? Here's a screenshot to better explain what I mean:

That's really bizarre. Are you running some kind of extension or add-on? I noticed that green icon at the bottom-right of the text field and I assume it remembers text input.

Try disabling that temporarily to see if the problem persists.

I don't get that, and I regularly visit the forum via Firefox, Chrome, a Samsung browser on my phone. As for PC I use Firefox and Brave to access the site and no issues as of yet. Which browser and add-ons are you using?
(Btw, I use the same background. Cheers! )

Yeah, I'm pretty convinced it's the extension I see but it's hard for me to say. But if the problem does persist even after deactivating it, until I figure this out using the "Go Advanced" button (the bottom box is just "Quick Reply") might display correctly.

By the way Zemekis, most people are using "aishajim". This is because of how the 'change background' function works. I hired somebody to code it but it's pretty simple really. (I probably could have done it if I was willing to learn a little PHP but I didn't know any.) Basically, the default background visitors see is the Melfina Galactic Leyline one. When somebody signs up a field is created for the filename of the background, but it's filled with the first alphabetically chosen background which happens to be aishajim.jpg. Wasn't my intention but it's how it works. I could probably fix it by just making a "_default.jpg" background which could be a duplicate of the Leyline background. But I'd have to figure out an SQL query to correct every existing account that has "aishajim".

Can't be arsed. And that was a bit long-winded.
