    Reorganising the Forum Index

I've been considering switching around the order of the categories on the forum's index page. Currently, it is this...

    Outlaw Star UK
    Outlaw Star
    General

Are you fine the way it is, or do you think I should change the order? Since it is generally unused, I'm considering making the Role Play Corner a sub-forum of Tenrei, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on that, and pretty much anything else. I'm all ears. Also, keep in mind you can "collapse" the categories by clicking the arrow towards the right, in case you didn't know that. They will stay that way until you expand them.

Personally, I think updates relevant to the forum and the site (especially given the redesign soon) should be towards the top, especially given the fact it is each member's responsibility to read the rules, and the guides are useful too. I'm on the fence as to whether it's best to have General or Outlaw Star nearer to the top. Whilst I don't want to take the focus away from Outlaw Star, General gets more attention, understandably.

    RE: Reorganising the Forum Index

Leave it as it is, there's no real issue with the current order. If people can't be bothered to use the 'collapse' option and/or scroll down...

And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

I second Baron's reasoning. Seriously, if they aren't going to put in such little effort, you'd be wasting your time reorganizing to begin with. Really, I like the forum layout as it is.

This is a two-week poll so I'll let it run and see how things turn out, but I'll keep your thoughts in mind.

    RE: Reorganising the Forum Index

As a forum admin who did quite a bit of research on forum structures, it is against the "natural law" of a forum to have too many inactive forum sections. The amount of Outlaw sub-forums are too great, and they are mostly inactive. It gives the average visitors a feeling of "this is one very inactive forum". All tips on running a forum say the same thing - combining inactive forums, do not leave too many sub-forums if you can't get high activities in each of them. You can always do split to create more sub-forums later when you get higher traffic.

I understand some of you are diehard Outlaw Star fans. It is a forum to promote Outlaw Star mostly. However, your best bet to get more people to watch outlaw star is to be able to get more new members who are already anime fans. The current forum structure give visitor a feeling that this is a forum about Outlaw Star only. So even if they are an anime fan, they would leave if they haven't watched Outlaw Star... even though they can totally be converted.
So to conclude, in order to promote Outlaw Star,
You need first to recruit more anime fans,
Then you have better chance to convert more people into Outlaw Star fans.

In order to do so, you need to put General Anime Chat near the top.

Here is what I think should be done,

    introduction, etc.

General Anime Forum <---- Current one is extremely hard to find for new visitors.
Outlaw Star <---- keep sub-forums fewer.
    General Discuss Forum

I couldn't vote because the poll options aren't what I have in mind.

I'll continue collecting more opinions until the poll's time is up. Although in the meantime, anyone's welcome to provide their insights.

    RE: Reorganising the Forum Index

I have to add that, my suggestion on forum structure in the previous post is only a general idea. It is not limited to only 3~4 sub-forums. I just simply believe the General Anime Chat section should be near the top and above any specialized anime sub-forum. That is what can attract most other anime fans.

As well as it is very important for forum not to leave too many inactive or near inactive sub-forums. All guides for running a forum agree on that part.

General off topic talk should be below any niche related sub-forum, because it should always take a second place as long as your goal is to promote a niche - such as anime.

    RE: Reorganising the Forum Index

You say the anime forum is extremely hard to find for new members, but I haven't heard this complaint before. This is probably because you hadn't watched Outlaw Star. I have no intention to change the name of the forum. You wouldn't understand its name, but each of those forums' names in the General category are names of locations in Outlaw Star. If people can't be bothered to look for the word "anime", well, Baron and Seth say it how it is.

I would only move one of the sub-forums in the Outlaw Star category to another section or as a sub-forum, and that is the Role Play forum, as explained. Outlaw Star's anime and manga/novels are distinctly different, henceforth my decision to make them separate forums. Since merchandise is about both the anime and manga, I can't have that forum as a sub-forum for just one of them. I might remove the Download Centre link from the Outlaw Star section and have it at the top of the forum. The articles forum is necessary. I don't know what else you would suggest.

I find that statement... objectionable. Contradictory too. You say that off-topic discussion should be below any niche. The niche of this forum is not general chat however, anime or not.

Earlier in your post, you said...

The topic of this forum is Outlaw Star. So, here you say general anime chat should be above "any specialised anime sub-forum". This is Outlaw Star UK. The Outlaw Star forums are not sub-forums. And with Outlaw Star returning for a live national broadcast soon, I certainly do not think Outlaw Star should be considered lesser. In fact, I think this is the best opportunity in a long time for Outlaw Star to shine, and possibly an opportunity for more members if many people are watching Outlaw Star across the United States. (Perhaps other countries, too.)

However, in the previous part I quoted, you say off-topic chat should be below any niche. You're also using the term "sub-forum" incorrectly. Are you sure you've got the definition of sub-forum correct? A sub-forum is a forum within a forum. A forum is a main forum that is within a category. Outlaw Star Anime is a forum. Outlaw Star Soundtrack is a sub-forum within that forum. Since general anime chat is not the main focus of this website and is a secondary focus, I think you've made a good point by saying the niche should be towards the top. And that is Outlaw Star.

Remember, general anime is not a niche. Anime is extremely popular across the globe. As such, some general anime forums get an amount of posts that a niche forum could never get.
