    Bad tech experiences

I'm curious about some of the worst experiences that members have had trying to work with tech companies. Tonight I left Adobe and I don't intend to return if I find a worthy rival. Don't get me wrong though. I think that Photoshop which I've been subscribed to the Photography CC plan for is top-of-the-line and I'll be hard-pressed to find something as good, but I'm tired of Adobe's god-awful DRM and the way they treat their customers.

I think it's ironic that I had an easier time when I pirated their software some years ago. I imagine that a lot of people can relate to how I used to pirate a lot of software when I was younger which is something I now avoid the vast majority of the time. I used to pirate Photoshop because it was incredibly expensive. It still is, but they made the expense more manageable with their monthly subscription service. For the past few days I've been getting regular pop-ups saying things like, "Feeling down about using non-genuine software?" (I shit you not.) I mean, god damn, when I did use non-genuine Adobe software I wasn't shamed by them for it.

I'm not going to go into this as this is turning into a long thread as is, but the measures they explained to remove the pop-up were plain stupid and I'd already had the problem in the past. There is no reason why they shouldn't simply acknowledge that a person is a customer and simply make the pop-up disappear. Magic. Indeed, it was quick to disappear when I told the agent I wanted to cancel my subscription. I am looking at Affinity Photo. It does look more or less the same as Photoshop. I am sure that there will be a learning curve when adapting to it (after all, I've been using Photoshop for nearly two decades) for when I resume the manga work. But honestly, it's worth it.

(I haven't even watched this but it seems very biased towards Affinity already. Nevertheless this will be worth a try.)

I prefer finding that I like software with a trial, then paying for it upfront and that's that. So anyway, that's my Adobe vent. Now it's your chance to vent about crappy tech companies.

I worked in a University IT department for a while (not teaching IT, I mean the IT staff who support the 4000+ computers on campus). We've had lots of problems with: Adobe (licensing), Lenovo (faulty touchscreens, many bad generic HDDs), HP (printers are ass), DeepFreeze (faulty system freeze software. That's really really bad).

Good tech & customer support experiences to balance things out with Fraser, Lexmark, and Western Digital.

I can only really say good things about Western Digital. My biggest hard drives are Western Digital Reds. I don't think there have been any issues.

Time for an update. I've found Affinity Photo quite incredible. While I know there will probably be a few things here and there that Photoshop excels at (or a feature Affinity Photo may be lacking), so far I've found Affinity Photo better than Photoshop. I can do everything I'd used Photoshop for (which is quite a lot, I'm just not into a lot of photography but Photoshop is very much multi-purpose) and it has much better performance. If only I'd been told about it sooner. I've paid Adobe about £90 (~$105) for what is only rented software and over double the price of Affinity Photo, and the cheeky buggers told me it was actually an annual subscription despite paying monthly and there'd be a cancellation fee, but as a "goodwill gesture" (I hate it when businesses use that phrase) they'd waive it.

    Farewell Photoshit.

Just to be fair to Adobe about my personal (non-work) interactions with them, I once started a free trial for one of their products and then canceled it a day or two later. I had a cancellation confirmation email and everything. They continued charging me for 6 months without me noticing, then when I contacted them about it they didn't argue and gave me a full refund in moments. It was their mistake but I was shocked that they made it right immediately.

I do NOT want to come across as an Adobe shill, just this past week they caused a big problem for our Accounting staff, but I wanted to be as fair as possible.
