    RaspberryPi

Has anyone here done anything with those RaspberryPi single-board computers? They seem to have all kinds of cool functionality and applications, but I've always ignored them as something for enthusiasts or someone with FAR more free time/passion than I have. I work in IT but there are so many facets to working with computers that I never had the chance to use one..........until today.

My boss is a Bitcoin fanactic, he went back to school to get a Master's in Digital Currency to understand it better, he goes to conferences for it, and he has even begun hosting his own events at local universities. He wants to support the emerging Lightning Network technology, BUT to do that you first need to download the entire blockchain up to its current iteration, which is 250+ GB. He was expressing the difficulty of downloading 250GB on his 15mbps connection at home. Any downtime (which is common in our rural area) will kill the process. I expressed that I have a ton of bandwidth at my place and I'd be happy to help...

This is what I'm tasked with tonight: GitHub - rootzoll/raspiblitz: Fastest and cheapest way to get your own Lightning Node running - on a RaspberryPi with a nice LCD

This extended way beyond just using my extra DL speed to support my boss, now I've got to learn a bit about Linux command lines, dust off my old FTP client, and get back into burning .iso files (easy part, but it did require a quick refresher). I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah. Some years ago I got one and used it for emulation. At the time I had an Ouya (yeah, god forbid) which I got quite cheap. Since the Ouya turned out pretty good after I modded it, with its better hardware I soon stopped using the Pi. There's actually a cryptocurrency degree? Master's? Call me a cynic, but I think crypto has lost a lot of its hype recently. I was into it a couple of years ago when I made around £500 in a few months. (Wouldn't call myself knowledgeable though. No wonder there's a degree course.)

I went off on a tangent there, so, I've never heard of Lightning Nodes. Interesting idea. Good use of a Pi. Whether I'd get another Pi in the future... probably not. I have home automation sorted through other means. Emulation too. A media centre as well. So I don't really have a need, but they're cool. I like 3D-printed handhelds that use Raspberry Pis. If I had electronics skills I'd try that myself with my 3D printer.

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"
