    Question Ubuntu Vs. Windows

I've been using Windows since I learned how to use a computer and it's one of the most popular OS there is. However, I feel the need to switch to Linux due to the fact that my ancient laptop can't handle Windows anymore. It became sluggish and slow. I'm planning to switch to a lighter OS and since I'm planning to study web development as well, I think Ubuntu is the best pick.

Has anyone of you is currently using Ubuntu or other Linux flavors? If so, which do you think is the best and in terms of speed and security, which do you think is greater?

I've used Ubuntu and a couple of other Linux distros in the past, though certainly rarely. I guess it depends what you want. Given the choice I'd never choose Linux, or OS X for that matter, because Windows has everything I want and need. However, if I was limited by hardware I've seen that Linux brings quite a lot to the table as far as necessary functionality goes. Ubuntu for example has the same web browsers as Windows, full-featured office suites and decent competitors to software like Photoshop. There's also Skype, etc. The games front is where Linux and Mac suffer, though more and more often games on the Steam software are also ported to Linux.

I haven't tested its performance, but assuming Ubuntu is faster I see few reasons to not give it a try. Additionally, as you may well know Linux is frequently used on web servers, so it's popular in the network industry in general. (Probably amongst a lot of web developers too.)
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

I really like Linux especially Elementary because it has similar interface with Mac. However, I don't think I can replace my Windows OS to any Linux distros because every time I try to do it, I always have the same error message which is really annoying I've done some research and I think the problem is my laptop itself. Another problem that I'm experiencing when I'm running Ubuntu via USB is that my laptop's fan stops which cause it to overheat and shut down automatically which ain't cool

My wife tried installing Ubuntu in her laptop since she saw it has a cute interface and she said it works better for old laptops. I tried checking it out when she installed it and it really turned that old laptop a bit faster. But since you're main problem is the laptop itself and not just because it's old, you might want to consider buying a new laptop instead.
