Thread: Roleplay Ideas?

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this kind of thing, so I apologize if I put it in the wrong board.

I'm thinking of starting up a big sci-fi story/roleplay sort of adventure. It could be either OLS or non-OLS, and I'd like to collaborate with people on it if anybody is willing to join me. I have a winter break starting tomorrow, so I'll be able to post all week (if I can remember, that is!)

I'm thinking of introducing a character I've been working on, or resurrecting an old one from a previous RP saga on another forum. The story would involve typical space opera battle scenes, maybe some mechs too, but also some more emotional moments, touching on philosophical ideas of exploration, finding meaning and love of the sincere in a nihilistic universe, and maybe some influences from East Asian philosophy a la Avatar the Last Airbender.

If anybody is interested, or wants to collab with me to head this thing, send me a PM! And in the meantime, let me know what you think. I'm always open to suggestions and new ideas.

While I've said before that I'm not really sure how RP works exactly, as Mr Starwind himself has said before, there's a first time for everything!

Do you have any RP rules or guidelines that are the most relevant to this kind of RP? (I'm sure there's plenty of ways to RP or whatnot.) It would certainly help. So long as I can learn the ropes I'm willing to help out, and if others could contribute to this I'm sure we can get something good going.

This is something we ought to do. It'd be a fun group effort if done right.

The way I see it, each participant takes on the role of a character--OLS or OC--and writes from their perspective. Here are some basic rules I'd like to lay out:

1. No using other's characters w/o permission
2. No self-inserts unless you ask permission of the RP leader
3. The RP leader(s) control the main characters
4. All participants agree on a general outline or premise
5. Proper English spelling and grammatical conventions (unless it's for a specific effect, in which case let everyone know)
6. If someone wants to join mid-RP, they have to read up and must a coherent idea of what they want to do before posting

These are the rules I've used whenever I've role-played like this. The way I see it, it takes the form of a story/novel, with each post being a short chapter or part of a chapter.

W-what, who? Oh you got it, Mantis! I'm not sure how good of an organizer I'll be but I'll see what I can cook up.

So when you say role playing, are you talking the Dungeons and Dragons variety or just a forum back and forth role playing? From the rules Outlawbard is proposing, I assume the latter which I'm fine with.

First things first, we have to have a concrete setting for this game. If you want, I can try to cook up some ideas for potential stories/setting and then, for those who want to join in, they can come up and tailor their character to that setting from there. We should probably try to get a roll call of who wants to tag along in regards to to this. Of course, if anyone has any cool ideas for a potential story, I'm open for any suggestions.

First, there are 2 big rules that are a must.
No God-Modding
No Power Playing.
God-Modding is taking control of someone else's character w/o their permissions
Power Playing is making your character uber powerful, or making up horse shit excuses as to why your character never looses.
I k ow no one here would do this on purpose, but those rules are always in place in the forums I help Moderate (Azurilland, if anyone is interested)
I'll think of other stuff to add when I get home. Not at my desktop right now.

And a good rule of thumb for a character creation sheet is.

-Name
-Gender
-Age
-Appearance
-Personality
-Brief Bio/Description

Learn something new every day. Maybe I should choose an unfortunate character who keeps on failing. It'd probably be quite amusing for an admin.

As I said, I don't really know the first thing about this, so I'll need to be near the end of the turn queue to see how it's played.

If we're going to do this, should I make a separate thread for planning, then another for the RP itself?

Would it not be so practical to plan in this thread?

Alright, we'll plan here. If you guys have original characters, post a short bio about them and lay out their objectives and motives, etc.
