Does anime always benefit from merchandising?

This is a bit of a random question but when I see an anime blow up and become super popular, it tends to have LOADS of merchandise that can be purchased all over the world. I am wondering if this always benefits anime. I am sure some of them had to take a loss if the series tanked in a specific region.

Do you mean official merchandise or Redbubble tshirts / figurines made by third-party companies? I think I need an example to come back with an intelligent answer for you in this case.

Official stuff. Not like fan merchandising or anything like that. I do that myself (I made designs and sell them through one of those sites).

Hmmmmmm....in that case, my answer to the thread title would be "yes?". I can't think of an example where an anime with physical merchandise was damaged by the merch existing or being produced. In almost every case, they only produce merch after some anime VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray/etc. sales are counted. I would assume that it's rare for an anime to sell well, then merch to do poorly. Plus, a lot of the merch is contracted out by industry pros like Bandai or someone similar. They have the skills and experience needed to assess the market and crank out the right number of figurines/titty mousepads/onaholes/bodypillows/whatever. With OLS' abysmal anime/manga sales in Japan, I'm shocked that it received as much official merchandise as it did. Then again, if you've been to Japan and spend a few days in Akiba going through little hole-in-the-wall stores you can find some merch of the most obscure shows that have ever existed.
