Thread: Do you buy manga?

A lot of people these days choose to just use manga reader sites to read their manga. I have a small amount of manga but I've only read some of it. I'm hoping to change that this year. I made a lot of progress reading a comic towards the end of last year (Scott Pilgrim) and I'm hoping to do the same with my manga collection.

The complete manga sets I have are Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note. (And the manga versions of Outlaw Star. Except English, duh.) I have partially collected Monster, Maison Ikkoku, Bakuman, Welcome to the NHK, Vagabond, Attack on Titan, Berserk, Tokyo Ghoul and 20th Century Boys.

I want to start reading 20th Century Boys, but unfortunately there's been a problem. Scalpers have bought up the entire inventory of the first volume on almost all stores. I found this out after I received the second volume as a gift and subsequently bought the third volume with a book gift card not knowing the first would be out of stock everywhere. I saw a scalper trying to sell the first for around $300 in the USA. I've already written my thoughts on scalpers elsewhere so I'll leave it at that. I did find a small comic store in Ireland that apparently has the first volume in stock. They might deliver to me so I sent an e-mail to find out if that's possible. Here's hoping because I will not buy it from a scalper as that only encourages it. I don't want to start reading 20th Century Boys without that first book. (It's the omnibus Perfect Edition.)

If any, which ones do you own and how often do you buy them?

I own too many to list, but I do buy a few of my favorite series to show support. Those would be: Yotsuba, Attack on Titan, and Ajin: Demi Human.

That's a bummer about 20th Century Boys Mantis, are you collecting the newer Perfect Editions? If so, I'm thankful I got mine before these were released, I have the whole collection of the older standard editions.

20th Century Boys is the only manga I own in full, the others I have are just odd volumes of Trigun, Dragon Ball and GTO.

I have a few print manga (including three yaoi doujins), but the majority of them I read online because it's easier for me to find new stuff.

Good news! That Irish shop accepted my request. It cost double what it should (mostly thanks to shipping) but I cannot complain. It was still a fraction of the amount scalpers have tried to get.

Yup! I really love omnibus manga editions. Fewer volumes to buy, larger pages, thicc books. What's not to like, eh? Speaking of which, I did get the first volume of Monster's Perfect Edition a couple of months back. One day I'll get the rest.

I first saw manga in the high school library and the weird Gothic girl was reading it.

That's good the scalpers didn't get your money. I agree with you on the fewer volumes, it's why I haven't bought any other manga as it just takes up way too much space.

Manga is something that has interested me but I never actually bit the bullet and bought any. It would have to be for an already established franchise I enjoy through anime. So one of the ones I had considered was Dragon Ball. I am just not big into comics or anything of the sort so I worry that I won't fully enjoy them. I guess this is why I haven't bought any yet.

So I looked up the number of chapters in all of the different Dragon Ball manga series.

Okay, it's a bit less than that, but there's a LOT

I think it's close to 70 books if you were to get every manga in the franchise. I have the complete Fullmetal Alchemist set. That's 27 volumes and I consider that on the excessive side. In your position I'd probably try to start small. It's how I should have gone about it to start with. Maybe take a look at some recommendations for standalone single-volume manga you can get at places like Amazon.
