How do you choose which series to watch?

We all know that there are way too many series to watch even in our whole lifetimes, so it's kinda obvious that we'd need to choose only those few that we feel like se should watch, but how do oyu guys choose those?

Is it the story? Character development? Overall interaction? Fan service? Or something completely else?

I try to watch series that personally interest me, and I also prefer shorter series instead of those that run for hundreds of episodes. It's just easier for me to keep my interest up when I know that the series will have an ending, and that ending will be coming relatively soon.

    My handy flow chart:
Hand drawn or digital ink and paint animation? | Proceed
    CGI? | Stop
    Good music? | Proceed
    Interesting Plot? | Proceed
    Cat girls? | Immediately Watch

I usually write several genres on small pieces of paper, toss them in a small bag and shake it around before pulling one out at random. Though that's only if I'm really bored. Otherwise, I just look for anime that's similar to the ones I watched before.

I hope I don't step on any toes but I don't put much importance on music. Character development is a big part of how I choose which series to watch. I would say it is as equally important as the story line. I do tend to like longer ones because I get attached to the characters and am not one to replay.

I tend to lean torwards for sci-fi myself, but if it has a good plot and well done characters. For TV series I usually give three to four episodes to see if it is worth continuing watching from me.
We are all insane, we just act normal for the sake of others.

I pretty much just look around on some of my friends Myanimelist profiles, and look at some of their favorites to see if there are any that I haven't watched yet.
I try to keep an open mind to pretty much anything, and I always at least watch the first episode or 2, since some shows take a few to get a good footing (take No Game/No Life for example).

I try to make a couple anime conventions a year, and I go to random panels about some obscure title I've never heard of, ask random people who are sitting next to me at said panels about it, and walk around in the dealer's room and talk to the merchants about some good titles in order to get a good mix of opinions. From there, I choose which ones appeal to me and try to pick up volume 1 of the manga for those, if possible. If it's good, I commit. If not...I don't. It seems like a lot of steps to follow, especially on the social front, but it keeps me up to date as to what's hot and what's not in the world of anime.
A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path he will then have to choose; the boy doesn't always know. At some point the boy then becomes an adult, and learns what he was able to become. Joy and sadness will forever accompany this. He is confronted with a choice; when this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy; the boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: "A boy has the right to dream.". For those endless possibilities are stretched out before him.

We must remember...all men were once boys.

It depends on my mood and what I'm looking for at the time, but I generally come to a conclusion to watch an anime only after reading/watching a fair amount of reviews and checking if there are any deal breakers included. I also place tremendous value on character development rather than just story and animation and music or the whole production. If characters are interesting/loveable then I'm almost sure to watch the show. Good stories are boring when done by boring characters.

I usually end up typing the series I just watched into a web search and I look for other fans in that series. Sometimes they have really good recommendations about anime that have similar plots or main characters. All in all, it really depends what I feel like watching and where I want the story to unfold. Recently, my theme has been delinquent teachers.
