Favorite anime character of all time?

This can be from ANY anime, not sure Outlaw Star. While I do like a few of them they don't take the favorite spot for me. I have watched quite a number of different ones. I am most partial to DBZ as I watched that the most growing up and have watched the series a few times and enjoyed it a lot. It is hard for me to pick just one really...

But for the sake of my own thread, I have to say that Spike Spiegel is my favorite. Cowboy Bebop is one of the few animes that just stuck with me and not for any particular reason. I like quite a number of the charters on DBZ and when I was in my teens I would have said Vegeta but Spike was like a real dude. Just something about him really stuck with me.

Lord Sesshomaru. One of the best character designs in anime, never loses a legitimate fight (in fact is handicapped throughout 99% of Inuyasha because he'd be too OP otherwise), has the personality of a cold blooded assassin but shows signs of caring for others as the anime progresses.

Harima Kenji, Eikichi Onizuka, Noda Megumi, Holo are some honorable mentions

I think Gokudera from Katekyo Hitman Reborn is still my favorite character. I like that he tries to fight more tactically than just with brute strength, but at the same time is still an emotional teenager, and gets pissed off pretty easily. The progression he makes throughout the show is great, too. Plus, his kinda sorta man crush on Tsuna is cute.
Not to mention, Uri is an adorable cat, which is always a plus.

Guts is basically Doomguy in the 15th century. What's not to like? Seriously though, Berserk is a story about a man who gets fucked over (quite literally) in every sense possible from the day of his birth, and is frequently pushed to the brink of insanity as a result. The Gods' have decided his fate is worm food, but good old Guts isn't about to let some false idol dictate his fate for him, so he fights back the best way he can; with a hunk of raw iron and an unbreakable thirst for revenge.

If I'm making Berserk sound like your typical power fantasy romp, it really isn't. Guts is perhaps the last manga character you would want to be for what an unfairly horrible life he has had, from watching loved ones being raped and butchered to the same being done to him, he frequently pushes his body and soul to the limit, allowing himself to become mutilated, punctured and burnt all to protect the one faint glimmer of hope he has left.

I have a lot of favorite anime characters so it's tough to choose one. I don't have one favorite. For the sake of this thread, I'll bring up one of my favorites.

Now, most shows out there go "How can we challenge the protagonist? What trials can we put him through?". When it comes to Kenshiro? "Screw all that!! How can we make Kenshiro out to be a badass in this episode!?!?" With his Hokuto Shinken, Kenshiro brings his own brand of justice to the wastelands going after those who prey on the weak. It's actually refreshing in a post-apocalyptic show, where the stories are typically bleak and pessimistic. Most stories of that type focus on how awful everyone would be in that kind of world and how dog eat dog it would be. Kenshiro in Fist of the North Star is like this shining beacon of hope, doing what he can to make the post-apocalyptic wastelands a bit more brighter.

Oh, and if Kenshiro destroying a tank doesn't sound badass to you, then we can't be friends.

I have many favorites, but if I were to choose one, I would pick Gintoki from Gintama. He appears to be very cold and inconsiderate but at proper times, he shows compassion and resolve. He's not a mainstream protagonist--that's for sure. Gintoki is also very funny and never fails to make me laugh. Of course it helps that his character is enhanced by hundreds of episodes of Gintama, but I feel like Gintoki is one of the most well designed characters in all the anime that I've seen. Not the coolest character that I've seen, but definitely the best.

Close seconds are Lelouch(from Code Geass) and Nana (from Nana).

Favorite anime character of all time?-ryoko_wave-copy-jpg

For me, growing up, no one better embodied freedom, fun, and adventure than the "space pirate" Ryoko. Bawdy, boorish, and all the while lovable, she's a mixture of bratty femininity, independence, and "I don't take no sh*t from nobody" that, dare I say, you just don't see much of anymore.

Unafraid of using either her feminine wiles or her destructive powers to get what she wants and unapologetic of her general mischievousness, she also has real heart, a genuine capacity to love, and an irresistible charisma that allows her to figuratively get away with murder (as far as fans like me are concerned).

Like Captain Jack Sparrow's Black Pearl or Gene Starwind's own Outlaw Star, Ryoko will always be symbolically synonymous with "freedom" in my book. In a roundabout way, she's taught me to never be afraid to be myself: Some people are gonna' like you, some aren't; some might downright loathe you, but if you're lucky, a few will love you exactly the way you are.

So don't waste time trying to be this or that, or somebody's flavor of the week: just be you! Concerning your reputation in this galaxy or any other, it's on everyone else to sort the rest out for themselves...because if you're anything like Ryoko, you'll be too busy embracing life and having fun to bother with much else.
No one's gonna' give you a map. You've gotta' walk your own path.

I actually liked her a lot too growing up! I didn't watch that series as much as some others but I do remember enjoying her a lot.
She was like this tough yet very womanly lady who went after what she wanted. Still had a soft and goofy side to her as well.

This is really one of the harder questions that I can think of, and to narrow it down would really be tough. I would just have to say that I will always have a spot in the heart for all the Dragonball Z characters, because that is what really peaked my interest.

I know what you mean. Actually getting in to anime for me started with Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. The irony is that Cowboy Bebop was the one that really stuck for me even though it was a short series.
